Is Monophanie a cheater?

Is Monophanie a cheater?

I just got done watching the fourth trial episode of Danganronpa V3 after taking a break from what happened to my favourite contestant, Miu. In my opinion, Monophanie’s child does not really look like her or Monotaro. It may be a possibility that Monophanie had an affair and cheated on Monotaro. Who is the father of this child? Do any of us know the answer?

To answer those questions, I want to bring up a scene in the fourth trial from the show’s wiki. In the middle of the 4th Class Trial, Monophanie reveals to Monotaro that this mysterious special someone... Is their baby, and that she's pregnant, with what she thinks is sextuplets, Monotaro's overjoyed by the news, but Monokuma is strangely silent to his children's incestuous relationship.

DNA can be used for paternity testing. This test can determine the biological relationship between a father and a child. However, as you recall the child got cooked by Monokuma with a flamethrower. From my two minutes of research, DNA molecule gets damaged/destroyed if burned in fire. Standard forensic DNA analysis may be unable to recover usable DNA, preventing identification.

Why would Monokuma absolutely cook his own grandchild? We know that Monokuma is a loving father of the Monokubs. I know the showmance between Monophanie and Monotaro has the audience split. Is production hiding a scandal behind the scenes from us? After the last five or so terrible seasons, I think one more controversy will kill this show.

Which character’s inner monologue would you like to hear?

There’s a visual novel called Raging Loop where after you finish the game you unlock "Revelation Mode”. In this mode you can replay the story and hear the other characters' internal thoughts. If Danganronpa had this feature whose thoughts are you most interested in learning?

My pick is Tsumugi. Being the mastermind, it would be intriguing and funny to hear her reacting to what the rest of the cast is doing.

What games do you like outside of Danganronpa?

Danganronpa 1, 2 and V3 all might be in my top 10 games. Do the games you like beyond Danganronpa share similarities? A lot of games I like are character focused like Danganronpa. Some of my favourites include; Persona 3, 4 and 5 (I would rank them with the first being my favourite 4, 3 then 5), Until Dawn (I'm excited but cautious for the sequel, it would be fun if they made a game with a Danganronpa premise), Dead Space 2 (Favourite shooter) and Zenless Zone Zero (It's a gacha but I like the combat and characters).

Is Novoselic actually a dictatorship? And is Sonia set up to be the second coming of Genghis Khan?

We are told that Novoselic is a small country in Europe governed by an absolute monarchy. The difference between a dictatorship and a monarchy is the method of power acquisition and the level of control exercised by the leader. An absolute monarchy is a form of monarchy in which the sovereign is the sole source of political power, unconstrained by constitutions, legislatures or other checks on their authority.

Concerning the level of control carried out by the leader, Sonia gives us some insight into the laws made by her royal family. Arriving 13 minutes early to an arranged meeting can result in severe punishment. Damaging public property is considered "a grievous sin," and the offender's private property may be confiscated and transferred to the city as a penalty. Running in a library is also deemed "unspeakable"; violators are forced to care for an unknown creature called the "Paranke" for 200 hours. All these examples are of a leader controlling aspects of public and private life, leaving no room for individual freedom.

The method of power acquisition and the level of control exercised by Novoselic’s royal family is that of a dictatorship. One that I’m not sure that Sonia realizes as she has been indoctrinated into this system since birth. Novoselic’s propaganda controls a narrative that its populace live happy and comfortable lives, but nothing could be further from the truth. Sonia recounts coup d’état attempts and acts of terrorism. Also, several kidnapping attempts of herself. There is obviously civil unrest in this country from the authoritarian rule of the royal family.

Another element of Novoselic society I want to bring up is their education system. A course in modern warfare is a required class in Novoselic's grade schools, resulting in the bizarre norm that grade schoolers can operate a tank. Novoselic also has plenty of military bases with massive supplies of weaponry.

I think if Novoselic can subdue the resistance to its authoritarian rule like Genghis Khan united the Mongol tribes, the country will start launching military campaigns to expand its empire. Novoselic needs a strong leader with military training and that is exactly what Sonia is. The Mongols invasion was highly successful due to their cavalry. Novoselic will copy that blueprint with their tanks. When that time comes, I fear all our lives.

What are scenes or character actions that people misconstrue?

One that I find really annoying is people saying Miu sexually assaults Keebo. I really like their dynamic and that they complement each other well. Miu loves inventing and Keebo wants to be seen more than an ordinary robot. They both are kind of outcasts of the group too with Miu annoying people and no one really respects Keebo. In chapter 5 Keebo even wants to test the electrobombs to see if Miu perceives him as more than being a robot. He also says that he appreciates the work Miu did on him.

The maintenance scene is obviously an innuendo that acts like it's suggestive when it is not. The same thing happens in the second game with the massage between Nekomaru and Akane. The picture is from the V3 artbook that even tells people to stop thinking it's anything beyond maintenance.

Did anyone else find Danganronpa V2 disappointing?

From the enclosed environment of Danganronpa V1 I think it was the wrong move to go to a tropical location in V2. I feel it lost a lot of its atmosphere. I hope for V3 they go back to a claustrophobic setting. I didn't like Ken Arata as the protagonist except that his sacrifice at the end was peak. I really hope that next season will finally have a female protagonist. Also, the two survivors were pretty lame. The Ultimate Adventurer might be the most useless survivor since Yasuhiro Hagakure and Tsumugi was a just a boring, nice Mary Sue.

Do you think NTE should add more minigames/activities to the open world?

I think NTE could take some inspiration from GTA and Yakuza to add some more minigames around the map. For example, maybe a bowling alley, batting cages or indoor golf. I probably wouldn't tie them to city stamina. More like there could be some challenges tied to some annulith and afterwards it's done for fun and you could do them in coop.

Which playable Voidhunter is your favourite character so far?

For me I'm really vibing with Remielle more than I did with the previous Voidhunters. She does have the advantage of still being mysterious but I'm really liking her personality being a bit flirty but at the same time not glazing the protagonist and having her own goals without them (and conversely them being wary of her). Her moments disguised as Mr. Roar were fun as well. I also like her tragic backstory is being used for her character and how it makes her feel like she doesn't belong compared to the world she used to have. She is definitely up there with my favourite characters in ZZZ.

What do you think are some underrated character dynamics?

It can be characters that only interacted for a little time or even cross game interactions like in Ultimate Talent Development Plan or Danganronpa S.

A dynamic I really liked is Miu and Kaede. They are pretty contrasting in their attitudes. Kaede wants to encourage people and to cooperate whilst Miu masks her insecurity with abrasiveness. Kaede is a lot more patient with her than other characters but still gives her some sass. I think if they had more time Kaede could help Miu open up a lot more and to be less insecure.

Korekiyo is an interesting perspective in Danganronpa

I know that Korekiyo gets hate for the chapter 3 reveal but regardless of that I find him an interesting and different member of V3’s cast as well as the series. I like the fact that he is an uncomfortable character in a series that tries to make most of the cast sympathetic.

A lot of Korekiyo’s identity comes from him being the Ultimate Anthropologist. The goal of anthropologist is studying the means to be human. He finds great interest in practices others might find horrifying as they are worthy of understanding before judging. Rather than thinking in terms of "good" and "evil," he often frames actions as expressions of human nature. At times it makes him seem intelligent but as we find out he himself is unable to recognise moral horror in his own actions.

The biggest flaw for Korekiyo is his devotion to his sister. His motivation to kill is because he genuinely believes he is acting lovingly. Korekiyo’s actions are evil but there is still a question about whether he is kind of a victim too (I’m not trying to absolve him). He is shaped by severe psychological abuse and manipulation. And the attachment to his sister is pathological. In a way he is responsible for his actions while also being profoundly damaged.

I find Korekiyo interesting because whilst he is highly intelligent, he is also emotionally stunted and morally detached. His fascination with humanity is genuine, but his devotion to his sister makes that fascination horrific. Ultimately, whilst Korekiyo’s Ultimate is devoted to understanding people, his failing is that he is incapable of forming healthy relationships.

Which characters do you think fit their attribute the least?

I'm so used to characters being their specific attribute that I can't see them being anything else. The two I see the most being a different attribute are Sunna and Zhu Yuan. I could see Sunna being a different element (like ether) rather than physical and Zhu Yuan to me seems more like a physical character than ether.

Miu is more than comedic relief and fan service

I’ll start by saying that I think there are a lot of Danganronpa fans who are unable to understand characters beyond a surface level. Due to this, you can see people that hate characters try to reduce them to a single trait. I think Miu is one of the biggest examples in the series of people trying to reduce a character to a trait without understanding their depth.

Miu gets hit by surface level takes mainly due to people not understanding that the bravado she puts on is a façade. She isn’t just a comic relief or a fan service character. She's a character built around contradiction. There are two main contradictions that represent her character:

  • Public face (exterior) that is arrogant and boastful vs Inner self (interior) that is insecure and emotionally fragile.
  • Intelligence (greatest strength) being her unparalleled creativity and genius vs Emotional maturity (greatest weakness) being her inability to trust others or cope with vulnerability.

Her contradictions make her a psychologically layered character. A mix of genuine genius and performative vulgarity, using her over-the-top personality to hide deep insecurity. In psychology the way she acts is very similar to a defensive strategy where you attack first, keep people emotionally distant and hide vulnerability behind exaggerated confidence. Unfortunately, she expects rejection that she often sabotages genuine connections by insulting people before they can hurt her. Her dialogue does not just serve comedic purposes; it serves her character too by creating an image of confidence she doesn't possess. A bravado that cracks almost immediately to any push back.

Ultimates are an important aspect of Danganronpa characters. That said, a lot of character’s Ultimates have little impact on the plot and in some cases their Ultimate is insignificant to their character. This isn’t an issue for Miu. Her Ultimate is relevant to the plot numerous times. I also think her Ultimate is perfect for her character. Inventing can be a lonely endeavour, with a significant time working alone creating something. We see that Miu creates inventions on her own and that her greatest strength is a lonely one, but those inventions are made with the intention of being seen as valuable to others. The purpose of her inventions is associated to her insecurities like needing to be seen as valuable and a fear of possible abandonment.

I do find Miu funny and that she has a great design. But if it was only that she wouldn’t be one of my favourite characters. She is a heavily flawed character and that is why I like her. I empathise with her insecurities and how they can negatively impact you socially. I like that she needs to be understood beyond a surface level to comprehend why she acts the way she does. She is a very compelling character if you are willing see past her abrasive façade.

Tenko has much more going for her than just being a misandrist

Tenko is a controversial character. She gets a lot of hate mainly due to her outspoken opinion on “degenerate males". Her perceived hatred of men is a big reason why she is seen as unpopular. However, I don’t see her hatred being her defining characteristic. Compassion is the attribute that defines her the most.

Tenko is an emotionally driven character that relies on being extremely expressive and fiercely loyal. The reason for why she calls the male characters “degenerate males" is because of the unusual beliefs she inherited from her master (you could even say these beliefs are fabricated if you believe Team Danaganronpa falsified the character’s memories). However, even with these beliefs, she still cooperates and mourns male characters.

Some say that her relationship with Himiko is weird and annoying, but I think it is the best example of her compassion and emotional intelligence. She realizes Himiko is suppressing her emotions and encourages her to express it rather than hide it behind saying things like “it’s a pain.” Before the seance Tenko tells Himiko to “Keep your chin up and live life facing forward.”

Tenko is heavily flawed in her misguided beliefs, but it is never considered by the narrative as correct. At best it is seen as comedic. I don’t think her misandry should be seen as her defining trait. Because she does have genuine kindness towards her actions.

Has anyone gained all the possible polychromes they could from Bizarre Brigade?

I'm going to be honest; I'm a bum at this arcade game. With the polychromes tracker I am constantly humiliated of a potential 900 polychromes I could get from Bizarre Brigade. I have only defeated the hardest level with the cabbage. Is this minigame really hard or am I trash? Are there any good tips to beat the hardest level with every character?

Angie is one of the most underrated characters in the series

I think it can be accepted that Angie isn’t that popular of a character. A lot of people find her annoying and some say she is a “bitch”. I’ll save my rant on how I feel that some of this fanbase are unable to handle heavily flawed women and just want them to be friendly waifus. I believe that Angie is one of the most compelling characters in V3 and is very relevant to its themes.

Firstly, Angie is not a one note character. She has a happy go lucky attitude mixed with an unsettling layer deeper within. She mixes her cheerfulness and religious devotion into a persona that exploits manipulative control. Her forced happiness due to her belief reflects the negative impacts of blind faith and how forced positivity can be used to restrict autonomy. Her character forms critiques on cult dynamics, groupthink and weaponizing spirituality.

In my opinion Angie in chapter three is more interesting than Byakuya, Nagito and Kokichi’s antagonism even if it is only for one chapter. The other three antagonists are mainly them against everyone else where Angie creates a different type of antagonistic force of separating into groups.

The formation of the student council is similar to a cult. Angie frames obedience as spiritual purity and disagreement as moral failing. Angie is like a cult leader in that she is charismatic promising safety and salvation with emotional manipulation. Her insistence that “Atua will decide” removes responsibility from individuals which develops a dichotomy between blind faith and one’s autonomy. I wish she was the main antagonist of the game.

Concerning her Ultimate, Angie says that she believes her art is not her own. Rather it is Atua creating through her. This brings up questions about Angie’s true nature. Is she using religion to avoid accountability? Or is she genuinely dissociating her actions from herself? This ties into the questions asked at the end of the game. Themes of indoctrination and whether you are truly who you think you are. Do you believe Tsumugi and Team Danganronpa falsified these character’s personalities and memories to make them act a certain way? Or do you reject that reality and believe the emotions experienced by these characters are their own?

In a way, Angie might be a victim of manipulation from Team Danganronpa fabricating her personality whilst also being a perpetrator of manipulation herself. To conclude, give me a Danganronpa V3 remake with Kaede as the protagonist and Angie as the antagonist as they compete to try and keep the cast together or separated through their own beliefs.

Which of these characters that died in chapter 1 would you prefer to be the protagonist of their game?

Sayaka, Teruteru and Rantaro.

If Sayaka was the protagonist I think they should keep the failed murder attempt in the first chapter, but she survives. From then she will have to earn the trust of the cast and not give into despair again.

Teruteru would obviously be a three-star Michelin protagonist. Halfway through the game he will just talk with a country accent.

Rantaro would be your typical amnesiac protagonist. It would be interesting for him to find out he participated in a previous killing game and wants to break the cycle.

My pick would probably be Sayaka.

Do you prefer the first half or second half of Danganronpa games?

First half being chapters 1-3 and second half being 4-6.

I like the first half a lot more. There are more characters for dialogue to bounce around and it's interesting to get to know characters before it becomes obvious which ones are going to be more important. I feel that later cases try to be more complicated to make up for a smaller cast and chapter 6 is mostly an infodump. My favourite case is 2-1 which does a good job of having a lot of characters involved in the case and setting up multiple suspects before the culprit becomes obvious.
