Right now, there is a huge outcry in Iraq over the Ja'fari Personal Status Law, and I honestly need people outside Iraq to understand why.
This isn't just some change to a law that we can simply ignore. We're talking about women's lives, girls' childhoods, mothers and their children, and the basic rights people should have over their own lives.
Under this law, the marriage age would no longer simply be 18. Religious rules could allow girls as young as 12, or even younger, to be married. Think about that for a second. We're talking about children.
Women could also face restrictions when it comes to inheriting land. And a husband could change his personal-status affiliation to Ja'fari law without his wife's knowledge, potentially changing the legal rules governing their marriage without her even knowing.
And then there's what happens to mothers and children after divorce. A mother could lose custody of her child after only a limited period, with the child then being given to the father. Even if that child desperately wants to stay with their mother, they may not be allowed to.
How are we supposed to stay silent about this?
We're not asking the world to speak for us. We're asking you to listen.
Please don't let what is happening in Iraq disappear behind legal terminology and political headlines. There are people here who are genuinely frightened about what these changes could mean for their lives.
We want our voices to reach beyond Iraq.
We want people to know what's happening.
And most importantly, we want to be heard.
