Topic Today stories for language learning

Hello!

I am a Spanish being an expat in NL.

I thought to share this resource here since maybe many of you are also struggling with spanish... (I only guess how difficult it should be to move around in Spain without Spanish...)

It is an app called Topic Today (https://get-toto.hautomation.org/rHQchwZ). It provides short daily stories adapted to levels A1 to B2. It is a handy tool to improve vocabulary and grammar with relevant stories and topics and making it intuitively through frequent reading rather than hard intensive study sessions.

I hope it may be of help! If you have any comment about it let me know :)

Topic Today app para aprender idiomas a base de historias cortas diarias adaptadas a tu nivel

Hola Comunidad!

ToTo app: short daily stories adapted to level

Hi community,

I want to share one reading resource for language learning.

It is called Topic Today (ToTon https://get-toto.hautomation.org/rHQchwZ) and it provides short daily stories adapted to levels A1 to B2. Free for Android.

I have shared it with high school teachers at my home country and they found it useful to share it either with more engaged students (which resd it themselves out of the lessons) and also to use it on their lessons with all students in general as a resource they can use daily or weekly. For the all students options what they did is to ask to read 1 story and then next lesson go through common exercises.

The feedback i got was that it was a good complement to formal language learning because it allowed students to see grammar and voc in context and real usage. For the students is a short exercise which didn't require intensive study and when used frequenty they felt their fluency improving. They get all the benefits of reading and the app provided an accesible format.

Hope it helps some of you!

If you use it in this set up and want to share your experience, i would be very glad to hear!

Dear community!

In my learning language journey, one of my pain points was to find material adapted to my level, in particular for reading. It was either too easy, such as kids' books, or too difficult and then required translation for almost every word, which would make it time-consuming and not enjoyable.

I have co-created a reading app called Topic Today (ToTo) that provides short daily stories adapted to A1 to B2 levels in Spanish. The app is completely free in Play Store for Android. Follow this link for more info: https://get-toto.hautomation.org/rHQchwZ

You get all the benefits of reading when learning a language, such as learning by intuition and repetition (not by memorising or intensive study sessions), getting exposure, .. at the same time that the content is varied and engaging with current topics. It is a handy tool envisioned to fit into your daily routine, and for me one of the most important is that it's a sustainable practice over time, so stay engaged and keep learning over time.

Topic Today is a live and ongoing project and we would be so happy to have your input if you try it out! Get in touch, we read all messages!

Dear community!

We are Maria and Dan, and we have created a daily short story reading app called Topic Today (ToTo)! The app is completely free in Play Store for Android. Follow this link for more info: https://get-toto.hautomation.org/rHQchwZ

Topic Today provides short daily stories adapted to A1 to B2/C1 levels. Each day, a different and (hopefully) engaging topic.

It has several cool advantages:

  • Exposure, varied content, and accomplishment: easily gain language exposure adapted to your level, no more reading kids' books or quitting reading because the book is too demanding. Having stories that are different each day makes it interesting to open the app to see what´s on today. And the fact of "finishing" something also gives you motivation and a sense of accomplishment every day!
  • Learn by intuition, not by memorising: you learn by intuition, repetition, and exposure. For us, it was a game changer not having to memorise vocabulary lists, learn grammar rules, sit long study hours, ... you learn vocabulary in context, internalise grammar by repetition, and gain intuition on how language is used. These are basic advantages of reading but the problem right now is to have access to those benefits since there´s little material adapted to A1 to B2 levels.
  • Sustainable over time: our philosophy is to make language learning sustainable over time. It is better to read less and frequently than one long intensive session that cannot be sustained over time. The short stories are ideal for busy people, they don't take long to complete, and would fit many dead moments along the day.

Topic Today is a live and ongoing project and we would be so happy to have your input! Right now we already have translation to your native language, and the next phase will add the audio of the story, and more cool ideas will be implemented soon.

Get in touch, we read all messages!
