While I appreciate MOST of you, I think you are ALL missing the forest through the trees
The question SHOULDN'T be "how do we alter Gates Circle to accommodate new development?"
INSTEAD, it NEEDS to be, "how do we ensure our road network will continue to have sufficient capacity for future development?"
So I am proposing the Delaware Expressway. The essence is that Delaware is going to be upgraded to a limited access highway of no fewer than 2 lanes in each direction from the 198, if not further north, to Niagara Square.
Theyre be a major on ramp at or around the current location of Gates Circle, destroying the Circle altogether, with additional entrances/exits at Utica, Summer, Allen, and Tupper
If done right, this could alter traffic patterns in a way thag could likely allow for the removal of the Kensington Expressway

The Empire Service is ALREADY one of Amtrak’s cash POSITIVE lines!!!
There’s already DEMAND, even just preventing delays caused by freight traffic will be a HUGE improvement!!!
Also, EXACTLY why they’re focusing so heavily on the Albany to NYC section. That’s where DEMAND is HIGHEST and trains ALREADY operate separately from FREIGHT!!!
Also, people who DRIVE into NYC are DUMB. There’s already like 8 DAILY flights to NYC from Buffalo and the price is COMPETITIVE with driving and it takes a FRACTION of the time even if you take into ACCOUNT travel time to/from the airports!!!

Think about that, they care so little over residents of their own city that they want the government to build public transit infrastructure IN A DIFFERENT MUNICIPALITY than address Buffalo’s literacy rate!!!

It’s a city of NEIGHBORHOODS and pretty much ALL the neighborhoods North/West/South of downtown STILL have their HISTORIC Main Streets with LOCAL shops, RESTAURANTS and GROCERY STORES.
In the SUMMER I bike 90% of the time in the city PROPER. SUPER EASY to get from neighborhood to neighborhood and THERE’S a lot of QUIET side streets and some bike INFRASTRUCTURE (COULD ALWAYS BE BETTER!!!).
Large enough where there’s ALWAYS something going on, GREAT indie art/music/theatre/comedy/film scenes, ENOUGH restaurants to keep you BUSY. Day trips to the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier AND Southern Ontario means you’ll always have SOMETHING NEW to expore.
Avoid the snow belt and you MIGHT not even experience as much snow as you’d might EXPECT!!!

If you go to r/buffalo, you'll see plenty of pro-tax propaganda saying that if we want better services, we need to accept the 19% tax increase!!!
This is the wrong way to look at it!!!
Our services are shit!!! We have potholes all over and 75% of BPS middle schoolers read below grade level!!!
Instead of asking, "how much do we need to increase taxes to maintain the current level of shitty services?" We really need to ask, "how shitty are we okay with the services being and how little can we pay to achieve those lower standards?"
What is the functional difference between 75% of bps middle school students reading below grade level and 80% of BPS middle school students reading below grade level. Why does it matter if my street has a second massive pothole? What do I care if it takes 40 hours vs 36 hours for my street to get plowed?
What i can tell you matters are the low income households across the city who will be financially squeezed by the 19% tax increase!!!
This would do WONDERS for supporting much needed services AND retail, SUPPORTING local businesses, INVESTING in city streets and INFRASTRUCTURE and returning land to the TAX rolls.
$2 BILLION would get us to 10,000 single family/row/town HOMES the state could SELL to local RESIDENTS for $100k. Well BELOW market value.
Also, I LOVE the Chautauqua Trail idea. Would be GREAT if they EXPANDED it East to Salamanca to meet up with the FUTURE Southern Tier rail trail.

In reality, it’s NOT a bad city DESPITE its flaws and offers a lot of GREAT benefits too!!! Being cynical for the sake of cynicism ISN'T helping the city. Way too many people COMPLAINING and half of them DON’T EVEN LIVE HERE ANYMORE!!! FUCK the people who MOVED AWAY to Florida and STILL think we care about what they think ABOUT Buffalo. I’m sure you’d ALSO BE COMPLAINING if the state spent MILLIONS WITHOUT ANY PLANNING at all!!! At least Hochul is doing the BARE minimum here. At least the state is TRYING. If you ACTUALLY live here and WANT a BETTER city then pick up a FUCKING shovel and do something about it. VOLUNTEER, get politically ACTIVE, TALK to your NEIGHBORS!!! If you want to complain for the sake of complaining without ideas to improve things, there’s plenty of like minded people on Facebook and r/buffalo's mod team!!! Or you can stop UNDERMINING the MANY individuals and organizations doing GOD'S work to make the city BETTER and at least recognize that Buffalo doesn’t ALWAYS SUCK, there’s a lot of GOOD going on to make the city a BETTER PLACE.
