What would it actually take to legalise same-sex marriage in Kenya?

I've been doing some research into what it would actually take for same-sex marriage to be legally recognised in Kenya, and I thought I'd share what I've found.

It seems that simply amending the Marriage Act wouldn't be enough. The bigger issue is Article 45(2) of the Constitution, which currently says that every adult has the right to marry a person of the opposite sex.

Because Article 45 is part of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, changing the law to recognise same-sex marriage would require amending the Constitution itself.

From what I've found, there are two possible routes:

• Parliamentary initiative (Article 256): A constitutional amendment Bill would need to pass through both Houses of Parliament with the required majority. Since it would affect the Bill of Rights, it would then have to be put to a national referendum.

• Popular initiative (Article 257): Citizens could initiate a constitutional amendment, beginning with support from at least one million registered voters, followed by the required county assembly and parliamentary stages, and ultimately a referendum.

For the referendum, the Constitution requires participation by at least 20% of registered voters in each of at least half of the counties, and a simple majority of those voting would have to support the amendment.

So, as I understand it, if Kenya were ever to legalise same-sex marriage, it would involve constitutional amendment + parliamentary processes + a national referendum, rather than simply changing the Marriage Act.

I'm curious what others in the community think. Is constitutional reform something the LGBTQ+ movement in Kenya should be seriously discussing, or are there other legal avenues that could eventually lead to recognition of same-sex relationships?

Turning 30 and mourning the youth and love I never got to experience

I have this terrible habit of looking back at my life all the time. I keep thinking about everything I missed, and I get stuck in regret.

I'm 30 now, and it feels like I spend more time thinking about my past than my future.

The thing that hurts me the most isn't my career or money or any mistake I made. It's that I never got to experience teenage love or the kind of relationships people have in their early twenties.

It feels like everyone else got to go through that part of life. They had crushes, first kisses, awkward dates, heartbreaks, and all those memories that people look back on years later. I didn't have any of that.

I spent most of those years feeling lonely. Looking back now, it honestly feels like I missed a whole chapter of life. Like everyone else got to read it, and somehow I never did.
People say your teenage years and your early twenties are when you learn how to love someone and how to be loved. I never got that chance.

Now I'm 30, and I feel like I'm trying to learn things everyone else learned years ago. That feeling stays with me all the time. It's heavy. I don't know how to stop grieving a life I never got to have.

I don’t know how to make peace with everything.

Looking for a Fellow Gay Guy (21M)

Thought I'd give this a shot since this community seems pretty inclusive.

I'm 21, gay, and a 3rd-year university student. I'm looking to meet a fellow gay guy for something casual at first and see where things go. If we click and it turns into a relationship, I'm definitely open to that too.

I don't really have a strict age preference what matters most to me is that you're genuine, respectful, and easy to talk to.

If you're interested, feel free to send me a DM.

Seeking a Clinical Co-Founder (Nurse/Clinical Officer/Doctor/Midwife) for an AI Maternal Health Startup (Equity)

I'm building MUNA Health, an AI-powered maternal and newborn continuity-of-care platform designed to improve follow-up and care coordination for mothers and babies in Kenya.

We've already built the platform and are preparing for pilot implementation with partner hospitals. I'm now looking for a clinician to join as a Clinical Operations Lead and become part of the founding team.

The role would involve things like:

- Validating clinical workflows

- Reviewing clinical decision-support logic

- Ensuring alignment with Kenya MoH and WHO maternal/newborn guidelines

- Helping design referral and continuity-of-care pathways

- Making sure the product fits real hospital workflows

- Supporting pilot implementation and engagement with hospitals

- Providing ongoing clinical feedback as we continue developing the platform

This is an equity-based founding role, so there isn't a salary at this stage. It's best suited for someone who's excited about building something from the ground up and improving maternal and newborn care through technology.

If you're a nurse, midwife, medical officer, or doctor with an interest in maternal health, digital health, or health innovation, I'd love to chat.

Feel free to comment or send me a DM if you'd like to learn more.
