The White Lady Loves You More:

I love both Elliott and Phoebe, and it's always been clear to me that she is influenced by him. She's often mentioned him in interviews and has played covers of him live before.

As a massive fan of both artists I was just so excited when I heard Governor's Waltz for the first time, cause it just instantly reminded me of White Lady. It's classic flamenco-ish-Elliott-Smith fingerpicking technique! Just wanted to share it with some other fans ;))

(Also if there any guitarists out there: Boy are these songs hard to play!)

Edit forgot to link phoebes song:

How to the delete all unused take lanes from the project folder of an entire session?

So my harddrive is filling up. I generally like to save a lot of stuff, in case I want to make a remake or an artist asks for multitracks to make backing track at late time etc. Is there any way to delete alle unused takelanes from an entire session, removing it entirely from the computer? Having several takes saved takes up a lot of space. I know you can do this in side of ableton, but that would be very time-consuming, and I am also not sure if that even would remove is entirely off of the hard drive.

How can I get less string-squeaks in my guitar recordings?

I've played guitar for years and am also producer and recording engineer. One thing that always bugs me on recordings (especially with steel string acoustic guitar) are the often egregiously loud squeaky noises when the player slides or changes chords. They can be very harsh and distracting, and especially if it's a quietly played part.

I know plently of ways to deal with this in post, but I wanna be better at getting it right at the source. ('You can't polish a turd' and all that) Are there any tips for better technique that reduce these noises?

Are there any remedies or recording tricks that actually work? Finger-ease/string-lubricant? Soaking fretting fingers in water before recording? Handlotion? Wearing gloves? Or any strings that are less noisy? (a part from flatwounds which sound totally different)

Are there any miking techniques that capture less of these noises?

Why can I (all of a sudden) only choose 1080p and 60hz on my external monitor.

I've had my macbook for a few years, and I use it with an external monitor everyday. I use a AOC Q27G3XMN which is a 2560x1440, 180 Hz screen, that I've used since last christmas with no issues. Now all of sudden when I plug it into my macbook, the highest option for resolution is 1080p and highest refresh rate option is 60hz. I haven't changed anything in my setup, and it worked perfectly fine yesterday. I've tried restarting and unplugging everything, but it still won't work. Please help

Which finger ‘leads’?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

By ‘lead’ I mean which finger goes first. If you are playing straight 8th notes for a bar. Which finger is playing on 1,2,3,4 and which is playing on the ‘and’-beats.

I’ve playing bass years and I’ve realized I don’t really have a preference, but I guess I should probably standardize a way of playing and practice that. I am self taught and a guitarist as well. I also mostly play with a pick, but some songs definitely call for fingerstyle. I am not bad at fingerstyle but I don’t have the same consistency and stamina as I do with a pick.

Is the a correct way to do this? Is it just a personal preference thing? Should I standardize a way to do this or am I overthinking it?

What’s the sound on the left speaker on Endless Nameless

Is it a totally fuzzed out bass out or some sort of synth? It’s extremely low (in pitch) and almost indiscernible pitch wise. Anyone know what this is? To my knowledge the track was a spontaneous live recording, so this is possibly the only overdub on the song.

Or could it be some sort of revamping of the bass from the live track?

Tools for levelmatching when adding processing

So I'm trying to be more diligent with level matching whenever I add plugins to a track or master. Trying to to not fool myself with the loudness bias. I feel like some plugins automatically add 0.1 db of level or something whenever you turn then on even though you haven't gained them up or anything. Is there any tool that can objectively and automatically level match when I add a plugins? Something that will let you quickly bypass on and off, so you can change judge whether other not you like what you are adding without the difference in level. This would be very helpful for mixing and expecially mastering!

Tips for faster workflow when mixing and editing vocals?

I find that I am spending to much time on mixing/editing vocals. Most of the is spent aligning doubletracks and harmonies to the lead vocal and a considerable amount of it also spent de-essing vocals. These are imo very tedious and (arguably) not very creative parts of mixing.

Does anyone have any plugins they can recommend for aligning vocals? I’m doing everything by hand right now, and when you get a song with tons of poorly timed BGV tracks it’s so time consuming.

Also at the last stage of every mix I go through the song and manually automate any harsh sibilances on the fader. I try to get rid of most of it with eq, dynamic eq and pro DS, but I always end up doing some of it manually at the end.
Are they any clever plugins that can make this process easier and less time consuming. Is smart deess any good?

How many of you mix into a limiter

To me it’s always been a no brainer to mix into a limiter on the mixbuss. I use FF Pro L-2 at the very end of my mixbuss. My reasoning being that I know the mastering is going the limit the mix and I want to be ahead of of the curve and approximate how that is going to effect my transients and the overall mix. Another plus is that when I send it off to clients the overall loudness isn’t to low. When the mix is approve I export the mix both with and without the limiter and send it off to the mastering engineer, so he has an idea of where we’re going but can opt to use the unlimited mix if he wants more dynamic range.

Is this common practice or do you think I am completely crazy for doing this?

I also have other inserts on the mixbuss: EQ, compression saturation, but I leave that stuff on when I send it out. I only bypass the limiter.

Any tips for returning guitarists, building up dexterity and speed?

So I’m 26 years old and started playing guitar when I was about 12. I was self taught played every day (6 hours a day or so) throughout my teens. It all came to a halt when I had this hand injury. I couldnt play for months on and off and my fretting hand just got so weak. And still is to this day. I can hardly carry a bag of groceries in my left hand. I still play every day but mostly just strumming or play arpeggios and stuff for my own songs.

I used to play Hendrix and SRV solos note for note and would just jam all day with my friends and improvise solos on the spot.

If I try playing lead stuff now I feel so handicapped. My dexterity and speed and vocabulary just isn’t the same anymore.

Anyone who can share similar experiences? And any tips on how to build up strength and dexterity again?

Who sings the low harmonies on Paranoid Android?

Listened to ok computer earlier today, and in the “rain down”/ middle 8 part of paranoid android, I couldn’t recognize to voice sings the low harmonies on the left speaker. Doesn’t sound like thom (maybe out of his range too) or ed. Is it some sort of sampling keyboard? Or did they speed up the track, record the vocal and pitch it back down afterwards?

Which instrument do you think is the hardest to get right?

And why is it acoustic guitar??? I can't for the life of seem to ever get it right. No matter what I do, it also sounds like shit. It's either drowned in the mix, or all I can hear is the pick scraping against the strings.
