Commuting to Sorrento Valley, where should I live?

I just got a new role in the Sorrento Valley area, and I am not sure where we should live. My SO will be working in the UTC area on a night shift schedule, I will be working a typical 9-5.

We are worried about being too isolated from people our age (we're both 26) and not having access to the city. However from what I have read commuting in and out of Sorrento can also be a big pain.

Initially I thought I would be working in Kearney mesa (see my post from like 48 hours ago lol) so we looked at Civita in Mission Valley, but now that I know it'll be Sorrento Valley I am not sure if that commute is still viable. According to google it looks like my morning commute wouldn't be too bad but the 5:00 traffic home could be up to 40 min. I am trying to keep it below 30 for both of us.

We also looked at the Vive apartments in Kearney Mesa, they're a bit closer but we can't tell if it would actually help much in reality. It does seem like after you go north of Kearney Mesa you get a lot less for your money when it comes to apartments.

Would either of these options be realistically viable as a commute or do we need to be looking closer to our actual jobs to not be miserable and just accept we may be further from the city.

How bike friendly is Pacific Beach?

We're considering an apartment thats on the east side of PB. It isn't really walkable to the beach but it's like 13 minutes to bike there. I see bike lanes on Google Maps but was curious if it is actually bike friendly, especially on roads like Grand Ave.

If we wanted to bike towards the beach and grab food or something is there any realistic way to lock up 2 bikes without it being a PITA? I am also curious if there is any risk of them being stolen even with bike locks.

Is it reasonable to commute from Mission Valley to La Jolla?

My job is in Kearney Mesa area which should be pretty simple, but my SO got a job in La Jolla.

We really liked the Civita area as a safe option to move from out of state to. While it is not the most exciting area it seems like a great starting point to get us there with amazing amenities, then we can move after a year to a better spot.

Is it reasonable to commute from Civita/MV area to La Jolla area? I just want to make sure I am not signing him up for a nightmare situation, on GPS it currently shows it would take about 20 min which isn't too bad.

Edit: I should also mention he’ll be on night shift so commuting to work in afternoon and vice versa in morning

Anyone have experience living at The Bay Apartments?

We toured last week and generally thought the location was amazing. Walkable area, had nice pool. But the interior was pretty date and the carpets were straight up nasty in the halls. It smelled like cigarettes and dog, and was super humid in there. Our leasing agent was nice though and she said they planned to replace them soon, and had already placed multiple hallways.

Anyone ever lived there? Google reviews are mixed and it’s hard to tell what’s true. I saw a couple saying they had issues with homeless people in the halls?

People who live in a "luxury" apartment building and actually like it, what building do you live in?

My SO and I are moving from out of state and trying to find a decent apartment to just get us there. I know you can find better opportunities on Zillow/apartments.com. But between needing two parking spots, wanting in-unit W/D and a few other requirements we're beginning to realize it may be easier to just do the typical "luxury" apartment building just for the first year to get us there. I have lived in these style buildings over half of my 20s so I know what I am getting into, it would just take stress off our plate. Then after the first year I am sure we will be able to find a better spot.

We are looking at North Park/Hillcrest/UH/Normal Heights/MV general area but open to other.

So for anyone who lives or has lived in one of these soulless style buildings in San Diego, any recommendations?

Is nursing in LA as saturated as it is in San Diego?

I plan to move to SoCal within the next year due to pay, better conditions, lifestyle etc. I’ve already researched heavily, San Diego is my dream city but it seems like coming from out of state it will be borderline impossible to get a role there.

I was curious if Los Angeles is as bad? I love LA and have been many times, I’d have no problem living there. I know it would still be competitive but I’m hoping maybe it would be a bit easier to find work from out of state there.

For context I’m an ICU nurse, 3 years experience, CCRN, And I’m an educator on my unit.

Is a Tax home worth maintaining if I plan on moving away permanently eventually?

I’m going to work in San Diego as a travel nurse with the goal of eventually getting a full time staffed position there. I know it’s really competitive so I’m hoping this will be a good way in.

I initially planned to keep a small 1 bed in my home city during that for my tax home so I would be eligible for stipends, but I keep reading mixed opinions on whether this is a good idea.

I saw someone say technically if you plan on moving permanently the tax home doesn’t technically qualify, but I also have seen others say I’d be fine. Would I be better off just avoiding the headache and giving up the stipends or is it worth keeping a little 1 bed apartment at home?

Can a Barista please tell me what I need to do to get an Iced Shaken Espresso made correctly?

The ice brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is the best thing ever when it’s made right. When I get one made correctly it feels like winning the lottery.

But 90% of the time it turns out as a watered down iced latte. No layers, way too much milk, etc. It’s still drinkable but what about this one makes it so hard to get made right? I’d say I get one that is made correct about 1/10 times I order it.

I’m not trying to complain but is there anything I can do to ensure I get mine made correctly? Is it overkill to ask them to remake it the right way? I just love this drink so much but I’m tired of gambling with it 😭

Debating running with Bilt Palladium and Amex Plat, worried about too many AF?

I already have Bilt Palladium. My plan is to add Amex Platinum for the credits and benefits only, I got approved for 100k SUB with Amex. (Not 175k presumably because I used to have Amex gold and cancelled it). Bilt would stay my card to actually put my primary spend on. The Amex credits in theory I would also come out mildly ahead (I live in big city, shop at lululemon, rideshare a ton, eat out monthly at least.)

As for Bilt am pretty sure I have already broke even on the AF. I’ve used the $200 bi-annual hotel credit along with $200 in bilt cash hotel credit. It resets July 1 and I’ll get another $200 credit I can combine with bilt cash for another $300 total off a hotel stay next month. My monthly Walgreens prescription also happens to come out to $10.00 exactly so I use my Bilt to perfectly cover it. Then I’m getting rent points too along with a Lyft ride free here and there (only when I’d already need one).

But the thought of having $495+895 in credit card AF is intimidating. Almost $1400 in fees for credit cards sounds like there’s no way I’m thinking about it right, but on paper it works out in my favor pretty easily. Especially the first year of Amex I the SUB pays for itself right? What am I missing here?

People with authorized users, do you let them have their own Bilt Cash or do you combine it?

I found out recently I could allow my AU to have their own separate bilt cash. This allows them to have their own perks and we can essentially double up on the monthly limits.

The only thing is making sure we still have enough for the rent points every month since my AU and I share rent. If we’re both using it as our primary CC is it worth splitting the Bilt cash so we both get benefits? Curious what other people are doing.

Is making friends in LA really that hard?

My partner and I (both mid 20s) plan to move to LA later this year, we both have no roots or connections there. We're both social people and after living in our current city we have a decent network of friends.

I searched up "making friends" on the LA subreddit and I saw people mostly complaining about how hard it is. People live far apart, are more focused on career, Covid killed LA, etc. It is genuinely concerning because as excited as we are for LA, if we'll feel isolated/unable to socialize there it's not worth it.

Is it really that bad? In past cities I have done it by hanging with coworkers, using apps like BFF and joining clubs/hobbies. I am an outgoing person who is decent overall at being the one to make plans/break the ice with new people/get people together. Making friends as an adult is 100% challenging, but is LA really harder than any other major city?

I took a “Collaborative Leadership” class in place of my college’s typical public speaking class. I didn’t take anything specifically for public speaking.

The CA license process is so tedious, I thought I had everything covered but just realized this might be an issue. I already applied but if they’re going to reject me for this I’d rather get started on completing the credit/class now.

Will I get my license by endorsement application rejected? If so, what would be the fastest way to get this credit knocked out?
