Based in Raleigh, NC but I ship worldwide. Pricing is very reasonable ($75 for your average number 5). I don’t go overboard on restoration, as these are users and I prefer to keep the patina!

I got this tub full of mostly rusty wrenches from a
Collector. I mostly deal with woodworking tools, but there seem to be many types and varieties. I won’t derust them all individually, what should I look for to pull out the ones that are more of a collector vs the common?

I have a good selection of Stanley bench planes available. These aren’t just cleaned-up shelf pieces — planes are cleaned, checked over, sharpened, and tuned so they’re ready to put to work.

I restore and tune hand planes for sale and figured I’d share my process, which took a lot of failed attempts to nail down! I’ve got it down to about 15-45 minutes per plane depending on how bad it is. Below is what I use to get it back to user quality, not over polish.

1. Derust and clean - I use evaporust if it’s overly rusty, but most of the time it’s simple green. Green scotch bright and dremel brass cap and scotch brite attachments are the most aggressive I go. That way I don’t remove any iron or hurt the japanning

2. Paint the bed - most of the time I don’t, only if japanning is completely gone. Then I use mineral spirits, I’ll sand it down to prep, and then hit it with engine enamel, followed by paste wax

3. blade - CBN wheel to grind a 25 degree bevel, followed by a worksharp 3000 for polishing up to 8k with a micro bevel.

4. tuning - fitting the chip breaker is fastest with a burnisher - turn a burr on the CB to act like a spring to the blade. Too much time lost trying to match a CB to a blade when both may be not flat. Most of the time I don’t need to sand down the frog mating surfaces, but if I do, I do it on a granite backsplash with 120 grit sandpaper

5. flattening - here’s where most folks might benefit. I start with an orbital sander on 80 grit to get the grime off, 1 min max. Take it to the granite backsplash with 120 grit to see where the high spots are. Back to the orbital sander to knock down the high spots then back to granite until I’ve got a flat surface. Then sand it up to 400 grit

6. final assembly - wax everything and oil the moving parts.

I love the process as it’s productive and satisfying. Doing two at a time speeds things up a lot too. (Can’t do more than 3 in my tiny shop).
