I painted a Snow Miku 2022 figure

The sculptor is Faye Wizard and the illustrator is Dalimao

This garage kit is quite rare, only selling twice with no chance of a rerelease due to the production costs. I found a copy on Xianyu (basically the Mercari of China) and a regular client of mine bought her. She's on the smaller end of scale figures and kind of compact due to the pose. There's no way to ground her to the base, so a 3mm brass rod was inserted in her back underneath the jacket.

Everything was painted using lacquer and enamel hobby paints. Colors were chosen to be closer to the illustration. The face was fully hand painted since her included decals were the wrong colors. My camera struggled a lot with this kit, so the reds aren't entirely accurate to what you'd see in person... Just imagine they're slightly desaturated. Color correcting is a learning curve I have not yet mastered.

This took 39 hours of work to complete. Surprisingly painting took up over half of the time, considering how bad the prep quality was in some spots and the simplicity of the color palette. The face alone was about 5 hours of work.

(Finished Garage Kit) Snow Miku 2022 - BUI

My most recent finished commission. Completion time was 39 hours.

She was typical quality to expect for a CN cast kit, just the gray model for molding wasn't prepped very good. There's no connection to a base (original art is just her "floating") so a 3mm brass rod was drilled into her back under the jacket. The hat is optional. It wasn't stated officially anywhere, but I'd guess her size is around 1/7 to 1/8 scale.

The face was fully painted by hand using enamel paints and a weathering blush palette. The colors were chosen to match the original illustration since I haven't seen anyone else do that when painting her.

Snow Miku 2022 - BUI

Sculpted by Faye Wizard, Illustration by Dalimao

Another commission completed. This one totals in at 39 hours of work. The paint job was done more to follow the original art than how people normally draw her. There is no ground connection with this kit so a brass rod (painted silver) was inserted to her back underneath the jacket. The face was fully hand painted with enamel paints.

WIP Cidala Twins from Wondersmith

I don’t normally post WIP but I like this kit a lot

Whatever casting company Vane and HongShanYu use is amazing… These girls had very little seamlines that needed to be sanded. It was all made with one piece molds so some parts only had the seams on one side even. They casted the ruffles in a way that didn’t need sanding at all.

I decided to try some new things with this commission, such as inking crevices with a much darker color to boost the highlights. HongShanYu did this on the ruffles in her paint job and I can fully see why. It especially helps bring out the shape of the ruffles.

I plan on trying a few new things for the hair as well with how detailed the sculpt is. Really enjoying this kind of paint style compared to the typical “clean anime” look a lot of people do

Dia-chan Idol - Keima

Newest finished commission. Total time was 35 hours.

Oh boy this kit... All of the pain was in assembly. The skirt was made up of 6 individual parts, halves for each layer. All of them were solid and got increasingly heavier the farther down. The keys for holding them were incredibly skinny at the top pieces, so pinning just barely worked. Everything was glued at the end and I used some polyester putty to help remove any gaps/seams.

The hair was done using only nail foils and holographic powder for coloring. I used UV resin to stick the foils to the parts, cured it then layered everything in a gloss afterwards. It's all glued to their head since there was no keys.

Lots of pearls were on the original sample but the kit didn't come with any. I 3D printed the large ones (easier than buying a bag of 10k that I'd never use) and painted them, the smaller half pearls were from nail art decorations.

Everything had a layer of pearl except the eyes. Since this kit is primarily one color with little shading, I used a mix between Gaia's Premium Glass Pearl, Mr. Crystal Color Moonstone Pearl, and Gaia's Pearl Silver to create variation in the pieces. Even the "skin" parts had pearl underneath the matte layer.

(Finished Garage Kit) Kiryuu Kikyou - Ukiwazaiku

Recent finished commission. Completion time is 29 hours.

Kit is fully 3D printed in white and clear resin. Everything was solid and in good condition. Printed resin is a lot more fragile than casts which caused a couple pieces to be broken on arrival. None of the decals were printed with white backing so both faces and a large part of the white fabric were hand painted. The base is a custom sculpt that I printed myself.

Despite how seemingly easy it was to complete this, I think I'm fine not working on another 3D printed kit for a while. Most of my personal collection are CN casts so I was missing those the entire time. I had to be so much more careful handling this one due to how thin and small multiple pieces get. Got really lucky Ukiwa knew what he was doing when printing this.

Kiryuu Kikyou - Ukiwazaiku

Finished a couple days ago. The kit is 3D printed in white/clear resin, thankfully everything was solid and fairly good quality. Ukiwa definitely knows how to print a kit properly.

The base is custom made, sculpted in zBrush and printed out myself. Both faces were hand painted since the decals didn't have white backing. Completion time was 29 hours.

I painted a cute Hatsune Miku figure

This type of figure is called a garage kit, which is an unassembled and unpainted resin cast kit. It’s based off an illustration by the artist Renz and was sculpted by Xibixibi. It only sold twice within Japan, and my friend was lucky enough to get a copy from the first sale. Originally it was supposed to be sent to an artist in China to paint, but due to them mishandling the customs process, it ended up back in my hands. My friend let me paint her instead as a result.

She’s done fully in lacquer and enamel hobby paints. The pigtails, boots, skirt, and sleeves have some pearl paint to give off an extra shiny effect in light. She’s not super large, like 15cm tall, so it was a very quick build.

(Finished Garage Kit) Hatsune Miku - Xibi Neko Cafe

This is my friend’s kit and it was originally supposed to go to a painter in China, but they never responded in time to fill out the import customs information. I had to do the surface prep and ship it out, so as a result it got returned to me. My friend let me paint her instead. Don’t have a time recorded for this since I didn’t anticipate painting it, but she was a quick and easy kit. It only took a handful of days to get her fully finished

Hatsune Miku - Xibi Neko Cafe

Finished this cutie last night for a friend. Unfortunately I didn’t record the time since I wasn’t supposed to be the painter in the first place. She was super quick and easy given her simplicity and small size

(Finished Garage Kits) Acheron Bikini Set by Shirube-ya Mokei-bou

Trying this again since the filters didn't like my first attempt.
Commissions started in late January, finished yesterday. Purple took 36 hours and white took 39. It only lets me upload 20 images so you can find the rest of them in my portfolio.

This was my first time doing full on bikini kits! I'm glad I had worked down a nice system for painting pale skin beforehand. They're each 1/6 scale and about 30cm tall. Since the overall design was quite simple, I tried something new when coloring that was inspired by all the Chinese painters I follow. Using very dramatic gradients and slight hue changes with clear color paint. Machi's art is so cute and I love the line of kits being made from it, so I'm very happy I got to paint these.

Acheron Bikini Set - Shirube-ya Mokei-bou

Started this set in late January and finished them last night! They're 1/6 scale and both about 30cm tall. Was my first time doing full on bikini kits, I usually lean a lot more into detail heavy ones. Due to the extreme simplicity, I decided to try out something new when coloring. It was using heavy gradients to exaggerate the colors, based on how a lot of artists in China paint. Also using clear colors to provide slight shifts in hue and make the pieces more interesting.

There's a couple images I can't upload due to the limit, so you can see all of them on my personal portfolio https://cordaterain.com/gallery/

Newest finished commission. Completion time was 36 hours.

A very fun kit! Surface prep and painting were quite easy, but the assembly was the real killer. There's no instructions on how she's supposed to be put together, and she is a very ordered puzzle. With the rise of popularity for color printed figures growing around 3D sculptors, it's very nice to see it be combined with a garage kit. I'm hoping more artists will take advantage of the technology to make future kits a lot more interesting.

Newest finished commission!

I liked this kit quite a lot, it had a multiple firsts for me. First time working on one that had some seams already sanded and gaps puttied, largest scale so far (1/5.5), and inset eyes. The biggest hurdle is definitely the assembly with how compact everything is. This was a 36 hour completion, the section taking the longest being her shoe ribbons.
