MSUCOM vs UW-SMPH

I know a lot of people would go with UW SHPM off the bat because it’s an MD program, but from what I’ve seen both are about the same in tuition and both are well-funded R1 research schools.

I had originally received an offer somewhere else before changing it out for MSUCOM. My partner wasn’t very happy, we were swapping a much larger city for Lansing, but the benefits outweighed. I’ve recently been offered a position off the UW-Madison waitlist. If this had come before the MSUCOM offer, there wouldn’t be any question about taking it. I am hesitant to change plans again this close to moving, and I know my partner would be very upset again.

My overall goal at the moment is to go into endocrinology and to do research with gender affirming care and underserved populations. My biggest concerns right now are finances and access to resources. I will be relocating from the South. From what I’ve found, it seems like Wisconsin is more politically complicated with gender affirming care access, although Madison is major city and progressive hub. With NIH funding restrictions, I want to be sure wherever I go, my institution can support me and help me build a larger network for collaboration.

Loans is another thing. MSUCOM starts in the summer, which gives an advantage since it offers the chance to be grandfathered into Grad Plus loans.

I would be very grateful for anybody with experience navigating these areas or anybody familiar with the schools to let me know their thoughts.

MSUCOM vs CCOM

I got accepted into CCOM back in December, but recently got an offer off the MSUCOM waitlist. I’m not from the Midwest so I would be moving pretty far for both schools. My plan since December has been to move with my partner to the Chicago suburbs and take out enough loans to cover tuition with minimal living expenses, since my partner would be covering most of the bills.

Since getting this offer, it has thrown my plans up in the air. From what I’ve seen, MSUCOM seems like the option I should go with - cheaper tuition, learning hospital, more NIH research funding. The issue is my partner is refusing to move to Michigan and I likely would be on my own. We’ve been discussing it and he’s just adamant that he’d be miserable and that there’s nothing to do there. I get being disappointed when we’ve been planning for Chicago, but it’s a really good opportunity. I’ve explained to him that it’s only for four years and all of the benefits but he still is very against it. They are both really good schools, but I am afraid of making a choice I’d regret. I only have a small window of time to make up my mind. Any thoughts or advice is welcome.
