A few tips for more engaging combat.

  1. Turn off all enemy UI

That means enemy level, all attack indicators, vulnerability state, everything.

  1. Set difficulty to forgiving

  2. Unbind healing

I hate the combat in this game so fucking much. However, since playing with these settings, it can be pretty fun at times.

Brightness is all over the place

The brightness in this game is all over the place. This is especially bad at night. Light sources will cause the surrounding area to become way dimmer than they ought to be. even having the window/sky in frame will dim the image extremely. This is super annoying and very distracting.

Footage captured on PS5 with HDR, though disabling HDR did not help. None of the the exposure or max luminance settings appear to be helping...

Any ideas?

How to visually tell samurai daisho apart from the rest?

I'm playing with minimal markers and obviously no health bars visible. How do I know which guys are the samurai daisho? Do they have special armor or something?

Dynamic brightness adjustment

Am I the only one or is the dynamic brightness adjustment way overdone? I'd be in a Kofun and everything is supposed to be super dark, but I can see pretty well, because the game turns everything into this contrastless grey. Then when I turn on a candle, suddenly grey turns into actual black and I see even less then before.

It's also way too bright at night. I turned off HDR to see if it made a difference, but it didn't.

Inconsistent camera behavior during assassinations

So this kind of annoys me: For some assassination animations the camera is completely free to move, for some it sweep snaps into position and cannot be moved until the animation is complete and when doing double assassinations, the camera instantly cuts into some predetermined angle and cannot be moved until the animation is complete. This can be very disorienting and more often than not, I need the camera to be looking in some specific direction, whether it be the direction of my escape route or towards additional enemies.

I like doing double assassinations, but the camera is making me avoid them... Anyone else feel the same pain?

I don't understand who this kind of weird shit makes it into a full AAA release...

Immersion goes hard if you allow yourself to fail every once in a while.

For combat I found the game way more enjoyable after turning off almost ALL of the hud and indicators. No enemy health bars, no levels, no attack indicators, no state indicators (vulnerable etc). It feels much more grounded and I can concentrate much better on the actual animations and stuff. I turned down the combat difficulty to forgiving, because not knowing which attacks are flurries or unblockables is a bit of a disadvantage. Also I don't like the sponginess...

I also have everything turned off regarding stealth. No detection meter, no awareness indicator, no intuition, no last seen silluete and I don't use Eagle Eye at all. I'm using the normal stealth difficulty, but sometimes I'm amazed at how blind enemies are when I'm literally on a tight rope in front of their faces, but 3 meters from the ground. Must be those straw hats really restrict your view above...

For exploration, I have no compass and I only allow myself to look at a map at a kakurega or when I am in a named area, like shrines, temples or certain districts. I would walk up to monks or merchants to "ask" directions. Outside of those areas, I'm only allowed to ask for the way, that is I stand next to npcs, turn on the trail marker for a few seconds, then turn it back off again and continue moving.

I only use scouts inside kakuregas. Fast travel can only be done from kakuregas and to kakuregas. Ideally while switching characters so I can pretend that they made their way over there in the meantime.

I have gotten lost a few times and it took me a good 25 minutes to find this tea cup collector guy in kyoto the first time around. It's a very slow game, but waaay more enjoyable. You should give it a go.

Tutorial messages...

I'm 50 hours into the game. I don't need tutorials anymore! Let me turn them off!

No, you cannot turn them off in the HUD settings. It specifically says: "does not affect tutorial messages". That makes this even more mind-boggling. They specifically designed this button to NOT remove tutorial messages... How dense is that?

Casually strolling mid fight

Man, the combat system is ass. The animations, the spongy enemies. And the fact that unless you are target locked to one of your combatants, Yasuke or Naoe will literally assume casual strolling stance when you move around without attacking. It's so fucking goofy, I hate it.

The intended rotational axis of the movie's Hail Mary's artificial gravity centrifuge is... wrong

I am going to start you off with this: intermediate axis theorem

When the movie Hail Mary spins up its artificial gravity centrifuge for the first time, the axis of rotation is such that the habitat does not spin end over end (as is seen later in the movie) but rather such that the axis of rotation is parallel to the length of the habitat.

However, this constitutes a rotation of the Hail Mary about its intermediate axis, which is inherently unstable and would require constant adjustment using RCS thrusters or other kinds of reaction control systems. I'm aware that the Hail Mary has plenty of Astrophage to spare and keeping the rotation in line would probably cost a negligible amount of fuel. It's just something that plopped into my mind the other day that I thought I'd share...

Project Hail Mary's Petrovascope scene on my WLED ambilight system

This is my current setup, that I am very proud of:

Jailbroken LG TV running HyperHDR and screencapturing software locally. Two ESP32 boards taped to the back of the TV. One of them is running the LED strip around the TV directly and is connected to an external power source. The other is connected to the TV via USB for power and is running the six Athomtech RGB bulbs inside these Ikea paper lamps as virtual LEDs over Wifi. All the bulbs came preflashed from Athomtech with WLED.

I can also control the TV strip and both Lamps (as one instance) to run the normal colors and effects and stuff, so they also make great mood lighting for Netflix and ... WLED nights ;)

It's been some time since I've set this up, so I don't remember all the details, but I'd be happy to follow up on any specific questions.

Anyways, enjoy my favorite scene from my favorite movie :)

EDIT: guys, how do I do this? Everytime I try to post this as a video post, the video just ends up being a link to the very same post??

Help me find this specific forest ambient song

The song I'm looking for is about 14 minutes long, on Spotify and the best way I can describe it is a forest, thunder scene with rain, occasional animal screams and a general orchestral hum or drone. However, it's definitely not one of those "10 minutes of forest rain" - type things for studying, or at least I had no luck finding it when searching for it as such. There are no lyrics and as far as I remember it does not have a very descriptive name (otherwise I would have probably found it already), but I think the name did have the word "world" in it, though I'm not sure. The most prevalent instrument is probably like a chello...

Large Arc should have way more lootable pieces

To preface this: I'm not saying large Arc should have more loot! What I'm saying is there should be more pieces to loot.

Is it just me? Are most of the pieces already empty when I get up close enough? Sometimes I get up to the queen or matriarch literally one second after it explodes and I'm climbing 5 pieces that can't be looted before finding one with the loot prompt...

Does someone know exactly how many pieces each arc spawns? I think the Leaper is one per leg + the core, totalling only 5, same for the Rocketier and Vaporizer The Bombardier and Bastion spawn one per leg joint + the shell + the core, totalling 14 pieces. The queen and Matriarch should spawn at least double that imo. Does someone know how many it is currently?
