Is there a premium on business English?

I worked on Wall Street earlier in my career as an editor and in several other communications roles, including three Fortune 100 financial services companies. I have a pretty good grasp of real-world corporate comms on that basis, and I also have a CELTA, having dabbled in teaching briefly 20 years ago to fund overseas adventures. Wondering now whether business English pays enough of a premium to make it worthwhile to teach, and if so, how to work that niche such that I could distinguish myself from people lacking the experience. I see mobs of people with profiles on these platforms but few with corporate experience. Would be interested in teaching online and potentially in east Asia. Any thoughts?

How would YOU fare as a participant on this show?

..Not great, I think. It seems that no matter who you are, if you were subjected to the level of scrutiny of this 24/7 surveillance and judgement -- you wouldn't look great. Everyone has their weaknesses and darker sides, especially under stress and pressure. On a show like this, the smallest warts are under the microscope.

Obviously this applies to any reality-tv show, but just saying this because there are so many hot-takes along the lines of 'this guy is autistic' and 'that girls is a liar' and so on -- even the "nice" comments are condescending sometimes, as if these people are somehow worse than you and I.

A little bit of grace would be nice. In this case it's obviously a Korean show and this is an English-language discussion, but in a broader sense, don't you know that all the commentary makes its way back to these real people?

I'm curious how people think they would fare when thrown into the lions den like this. Personally I think I would rather get thrown into a literal lion's den.

Ultimately the whole purpose of reality TV is just to give us the feeling of superiority like "this guy! can you believe this guy?!" Most of the empathy for the participants -- rooting for them to do well -- is drowned by the dynamics of how it plays out, which is never very well.

Bitcoin is the ultimate "solution"...

... for gambling addicts. Because it is a 'meme' asset (or store of value or whatever you believe it to be), "if we all believe in it, it can only go up, right?" Unlike tulips, racehorses, equities, or any other speculative investment -- bitcoin has absolutely no fundamentals underlying it. It's just pure belief, maybe pure Nietzschean will to power.

The only limit to liquidity is when people (retail investors) need the money for something else, like rent. So the swings in value you see are nothing much more than the ebb and flow of disposable income among gamblers.

One branch of behavioral economics has speculated that money has a "drug" value, where the investment is more about the internal emotional reward that you are getting from the process (just like in going to a casino) than the convertible value of the asset itself. What you are really HODLing on to is the process addiction of anticipating gains, and the thrill of the risk, and the emotional rollercoaster of checking your portfolio, etc etc. The "bitcoin investment" is just what Alfred Hitchcock would call a MacGuffin.

Whether it was intentional, or just happened by "natural selection," bitcoin is sort of the perfect mousetrap for gambling addicts.

This thread has definitely persuaded me: I need to be on the sell side of the crypto-grift.

Hunter students/ alumni: satisfied with administration?

Hunter students and alumni: are you satisfied with the administration, including registrar's office and all the bureaucracy of the school in general, considering the cost of the school and all things considered? What are the friction points and issues?

We all know the school is"recovering" from the Jennifer Rabb era. Are things improving?

ABA-approved paralegal cert program - how much work outside classroom?

I'm looking at a 'synchronous online' ABA-approved paralegal cert program. The schedule of classes is 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday + 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday -- for five and a half months.

This is quite a bit for somebody who is working - I am wondering how much work outside of classroom hours + studying for exams would be considered realistic. Obviously varies by person but would be interested to hear ballpark ideas and experience of people who have taken the ABA-approved courses. Cheers.

Lichen on asbestos tiles

I have this really tough black lichen on asbestos tiles on the house. I tried spraying Wet 'n Forget on it, but that had very little effect. The lichen is so hardened that I am wary of scraping it with anything more than a hard-bristled nylon brush, which doesn't fully remove it, and the worst affected part of the house is on the second floor, very hard to reach over an awning. I have heard that you're not supposed to power-wash asbestos but in any case that wouldn't blast this off. When I brush it off with force with a nylon brush is shows green residue which makes me think it's still alive although that seemed unlikely.

The house is in the US northeast and hasn't been touched in 40+ years.

Any advice on dealing with this?

Mijoo's youtube channel and the corporate k-celebrity youtube industry

There is an exploding industry now of little (and big) production companies responsible for the youtube channels of Korean celebrities and former celebrities and b-list celebrities. You can just imagine that everyone even remotely famous has by now been "pitched" on one of these contracts.

It seems to me that they are a pretty brutal business sometimes. The channels make almost all of their money from cringey product placements for very low profit margins, but that's not even the most off-putting aspect.

It's just that a lot of times there is such a whiff of desperation and falseness to it that it is doing more harm than good for the famous 'host' - and I don't mean "host" in the sense of host/parasite lol.

Like a lot of people, I have seen Mijoo on the variety shows and like her a lot. She's hilarious and charming and down to Earth. So I started watching her channel, produced by a company called OOTB, which handles a lot of celebrity content. Something feels a little bitter about it.

Her sense of humor (shown in all the variety shows) is very much self-deprecating -- she makes fun of herself, and doesn't hesitate to embarrass herself. But on her show, it feels like the producers are constantly trying to just make fun of her and/or humiliate her. It's not funny when it's your own producers. I don't know, to me it feels like a toxic abusive relationship. Not the world's worst job but an emotionally grueling way to make a couple grand a month.

I could say the same or similar about some of the other celebrity youtube channels, where the host is the butt of the joke and put into countless outrageous situations, which often don't land. I am not saying it's an evil business model, but it must feel pretty dire for some of the participants.

I guess it's part and parcel of the bigger picture of Korean media, where artists are indentured and subordinate cogs in the machine, at least until they become so big that they ARE the machine. It's not just that the volume of video being produced has exploded since the pandemic, but also that the quality of it is really shifting in bizarre ways. An infinite firehose of parasocial addiction material.

Well that's my rant. Thoughts?

Resolve 20 hijacking my audio driver

I'm using Resolve 20
Focusrite 4i4 audio interface ASIO driver

I didn't have this problem with Resolve 19! :

After I open Resolve it "takes over" the sound driver and sound works fine in Resolve. But while using resolve and even when I close it back down, the sound no longer works through the interface for any other apps - it defaults back to the onboard sound on the computer. Resolve is aggressively "holding onto" the ASIO driver (?)

The only thing I've found to grab it back is to open up Reaper (similar to ProTools/Logic) and change the sample rate / buffer size to pretty much anything else.

This problem happens even though sample rate / buffer size initially matches between all apps.

Anyone have a fix or insight on this?
