How do you avoid forgetting free trials before they start charging you?

I recently signed up for a free trial to test a service I was interested in thinking I would either cancel it or decide whether it was worth paying for. A few days later I completely forgot about it until I noticed the trial was about to turn into a paid subscription.

It made me realize how easy it is to lose track of these things especially when you have several subscriptions with different renewal dates. One trial might end after seven days while another renews after a month so relying only on memory can be risky. Reminder emails they can easily get buried in a busy inbox.

From this i was thinking about how do I avoid unexpected charges. And how do you keep track of your free trials and subscriptions? Do you use calendar reminders, check your bank statements or use an anything else to manage everything in one place?

Why do most budgeting apps treat subscriptions like ordinary transactions?

I feel like most people only think about a purchase when they see the money leave their account. With subscriptions it’s easy to forget about them because the payment keeps coming back without you really thinking about it.

If I buy something once I usually do not have to think about it again. But with a subscription, that same payment can keep showing up every month or once a year.

Most budgeting apps seem pretty good at showing where your money went. The thing is, subscriptions often look just like any other transaction. For example I might see a $15 payment for a streaming service under entertainment but I may not notice that it’s going to charge me again next month or that the price has gone up.

I think it would be more useful if recurring payments were easier to spot. Seeing the next renewal date and roughly how much a subscription costs me over a year would make it much easier to decide what I actually want to keep.

It would also be helpful to get a reminder when a yearly subscription is about to renew especially for things I do not use very often.

If you could change one thing about how budgeting apps handle subscriptions what would you want them to show you?
