Nepenthes ulukaliana Macfarlanei Genting Highlands

Some photos from Genting highlands summit, about an hour from Kuala Lumpur. Previously called macfarlanei, still actually a super impressive species to see in person and probably one of the easiest species to see. Most of the photos are the RSC 9 road which is often hiked by locals in the afternoon, ulukaliana being the most predominant species in the area. It often grows semi buried in the ferns and is often overlooked but is very common, pitchers get more colorful in higher altitude.

Ramispina grows more in the actual forest trails in other areas with some very dark black pitchered specimens (and hybrids) growing on the exposed retaining wall sides early in the RSC road along with sanguinea which is very uncommon the further you go up the trail.

Vireya are very prolific at Genting with several species but flowering season is sporadic.

Some in situ photos of N. ramispina. It is a lot less common in the area than N. ulukaliana (old macfar) which is found in quite high amounts tbh

I would like to know more detail regarding Kauai (no specific area in mind) and the Hilo area on the main island. Kauai does seem a lot more scenic and smaller clearly, however I gather it is economically stagnant and low housing options. I take it there must be a lot of history for why it became like that and for the number of people moving to O'ahu or the mainland, its a bit surprising since it is so beautiful.

Regarding Hilo area, is it correct that it is cheaper? With the volcano being active I would think insurance is quite high and there must be other unexpected factors. Also for most of the towns like HPP there is significant commentary about petty crime, drug abuse... clearly this is common on the mainland but it does seem that it is significantly higher for Hilo. It's not clear to me if Kauai also has significant petty crime.

Any insight on the differences besides the clear landscape differences would be appreciated. Thanks!
