A Fate Worse than Death
There is a fate worse than death. That is how the Priest began the sermon. Despite the unorthodox opening the sermon was infact quite normal. We had all known that the Silent Choir was the enemy. Then he said something we had never expected. Something that made the entire congregation go dead silent. He told us about the Betwixt.
That is the fate worse than death, to become Betwixt. You dont die, you dont even cease to exist. You simply become stuck between reality and the hell of the Choirs realm. It is the punishment for willing service to the Choir. Your soul is eternally damned for turning away from the light and truth of the Savior, the Blessed Anchor of Our Souls against the Darkness. You are left flickering forever between the two realities, barely more than a shadow one moment, the next your normal form, back and forth every moment of every day for the rest of eternity.
I have to admit this sermon was certainly the most thought provoking sermon the old priest had given in many years. A terrifying new prospect to consider. The truth of service to what we thought was the newest guise of the Father of Lies. All the more reason to ignore its whispers and lies. All the more reason to NEVER cross the threshold beyond all hope. I was still thinking about this when I got home, tomorrow I would join the UHSN the Unified Holy Sanctums Navy. I had nothing left anymore anyways not after little Ellen died, then my wife Juliana only a week later. I had to move on I had no reason to stay here anymore. The apartment was of course empty save for a lonely air mattress in the corner of the living room. I cant even bring myself to sleep where She used to sleep. It was time to go, I was finally ready to explore the galaxy. I had almost forgotten about the Betwixt by the time I had laid down to sleep. I would never forget them again after that night.
I was in a strange place, one I had never been before. Long hallways painted gunmetal grey, though I had never been on one I couldn't shake the feeling I was seeing the interior of one of the UHSNs great warships. At first the overhead lighting hummed brightly and the hallways were well lit, not a single place to hide save in one of the many rooms I assumed the doors lead too. As I began to walk around however I noticed a slow dimming of lights and a noticeable drop in temperature. I turned a corner after what I estimated to be about 35 minutes of walking to find a hallway with barely functioning lighting, if one wasnt simply off it was flickering. The temperature too suddenly dropped even more, I wasnt just cold I was freezing. Then I heard a sound that could've stopped my heart. "There you are Daddy" little Ellens voice came from the darkness. "Are you hear to play with me?" She said sounding closer. "This cant be" I said. "Dont be silly Daddy you can see me again. Just give in." Then she came into the one working light. No, it wasnt her, not really. It was an outline of her form, then it was her exactly as I remembered. Then back to the outline again. "No. No. No" I began to say backing up. I gripped my crucifix and began to pray. She began to laugh. "He has no power here Daddy. He doesnt listen to your Dreams." Then a voice that most definitely wasn't her a voice of ancient Primordial Evil, "ONLY I DO". "JESUS HAVE MERCY ON ME A SINNER" I Began the Jesus prayer aloud and strong. The temperature rose suddenly, the lights all turned on and Ellen was gone. As soon as I finished the prayer I woke up covered in sweat. I looked over at the closed bedrooms. I could see the lights flickering underneath the door crack.
