First Impressions: Ed O'Brien's new album, "Blue Morpho", is finally out! 🦋
Ed's new work has just been released, and I wanted to share my very first impressions right off the bat. I'll try not to spoil it too much, but I'll tell you one thing right away: after listening to it, I felt genuinely happy. It's a very, very solid and truly beautiful record.
The tracks that stood out to me the most on the first listen are Incantations, Blue Morpho, Teachers, and Obrigado. Incantations and Blue Morpho are excellent and perfectly set the mood of the record. Teachers has a gorgeous, hypnotic bassline of absolute top quality. Then there is Obrigado, which is undoubtedly the most mind-blowing song on the album. It's a nearly 10-minute masterpiece that just flies by as if it were 2. I'm calling it: on the first listen, this is the best track of our Ed's entire solo career.
In a few days, the new Boards of Canada album, "Inferno", will be released, and I definitely heard their influence on this work by Ed. This vibe is noticeable here and there in almost every track, as if it were an intrinsic part of the project, but it becomes incredibly evident in the final track, Obrigado. It has that typical "deteriorated" BoC sound, which is absolutely fantastic and perfectly integrated into the production.
It all makes perfect sense, too: I think Ed mentioned in an interview that he listens to the Boards of Canada a lot and that he was actually introduced to them by Thom!
Massive congratulations to Ed for this wonderful project. Happy listening everyone, it's going to be a very, very beautiful 40 minutes 🤩
