Mixed-ethnicity child's last name, combine parents' surname. Implications for child?

Hi guys, we are both Americans of Asian descent but from different ethnicities. We are thinking about a child, and surnames.

The mother wants the child to have her surname (which is odd as it is the norm for the the child to carry on the father's surname). She says that this comes down from patriarchy, and that we can question it, and not follow it. Fair enough...?

She was adamant that the child gets her last name (due to the "mother's sacrifice of childbirth"), but she sounded enthusiastic after I proposed that we do a mashup and create a new surname. A new start for a new family of mixed ethnicities. We only plan to have one child.

  1. I wonder what implications this would mean for the child. They'll have no sibblings, and will be 'alone' after she and I pass (we are relatively old).
  2. The child would already feel some 'confusion' because of their mixed heritage, not too different from mixed-race people.
  3. The child might feel more alone as their last name would be rarer than usual, if not, unique. May not feel like they belong in the extended family either as they stick out and be 'different' with a different surname.

Have you experienced something like this? What are your thoughts? Are we being selfish here, 'playing around' with our child's future, and should just stick with the norm?

Rant: I hate reading academic papers

Seriously, they are inaccessible to the general public. They tell you that it's actually written in 'academic English' or whatever, as if it's meant to make you feel any better. But that doesn't solve anything - you still have to know WTF it's trying to articulate, using the most disjointed and longest sentences, filled with most the most jargon, ever. Why must a sentence be 30+ words? Or even 15? I haven't even started on the LENGTH of these papers... as if we have nothing better to do.

Do these authors take pleasure into seeing how much they can get away with, writing so horribly that it's inaccessible to the general public, and make readers - who have no other choice - struggle as much as possible?

It's 2026 right, and everyone going on and on about accessibility... How is this still acceptable? "It's academic English" is not a good excuse anymore... What happened to 'inclusivity' and 'diversity' and 'accessibility' etc.

Thank god for freaking AI. "Summarise this nonsense"

Masters of Education (Secondary) STEM vs non-STEM? (WSU vs ACU)

Hi guys, I'm changing careers from web development to teaching (secondary). Trying to make two difficult decisions:

  1. Master of Teaching (Secondary) STEM at Western Sydney Uni (Penrith), vs.
  2. Master of Teaching at Australian Catholic Uni (Strathfield).

I've had my decision firm on ACU, but am wavering now based on the staff communication - their course map and advice is confusing and contradictory, and I've found the communication with their staff very patronising. (Waiting for 3 days for clarification of their last email with a list of questions, only to be replied with generic email that addresses nothing grrr)

  • Any thoughts on ACU vs WSU?
  • Is one uni favoured over the other
  • Any thoughts on a "STEM" Master of Education (Secondary) vs generic non-STEM?
  • Is the STEM version favoured more?

Thank you

Stray cats mating, what to do

I have been feeding a stray cat who now expects me at a certain time of the day. Then it starting bringing a friend cat.

I think they were both young as they are both small. They are cute obviously. But chicken shit and definitely in the 'wild' category IMO, as in they are scared of humans. I cannot get anywhere near them to touch them, and they run away as soon as I take a step towards them.

Today I realised their sexes - male and female - after one of them tried mating with the other, repeatedly (the female did not like it... kinda violent to be honest).

Not sure what to do if she becomes pregnant. I want to catch them and take them to a shelter before pregnancy becomes a real thing, but according to the council they do not take stray cats as they are too full. I really don't want to spend money on desexing them either as I'm out of a job (if you're looking for an experienced web developer let me know).

  • Do I just let them be and risk an explosion of cats in my area? (I'd rather not)
  • What is my best course of action to help the two receive human care (and not be strays).

BTW i'm not used to animals but would like a pet one day, but don't have the capacity to raise one myself right now. (Also the cats, again, are not 'friendly' so that is further discouragement)
