Wyll is one of the most underrated companions
When people talk about Wyll on this sub, I get the impression that public perception paints him as a rather boring, 'standard' hero-guy. A guy who lacks 'content' and agency in his story.
I used to agree. I tried to romance Wyll once, but was tired of waiting for him so I cheated on him with his Patron. He did not like that.
But... I just completed the Wyrm quest and now my perspective has shifted. The quest is a very unique Zelda-esque dungeon, befitting a Hero. The story you hear while facing the Wyrm gives crucial background info on the main quest. And Wyll shows growth as a character, finding his (new) purpose and learning to rely more on his own abilities. Not boring at all, but meaningful growth by overcoming formidable challenges.
Moreover, the Wyrm quest seems to relate to Wyll as the Gauntlet of Share relates to Shart. Viewed like that, Wyll may actually be one of the companions with the most 'content'. He has the coolest character intro scene of the whole cast blasting and stabbing goblins at the Grove, he is the reason we encounter Karlach, the whole Mizora ordeal has key twists and turns throughout the game (in particular when you meet her, at Moonrise and Wyrm's crossing), his dad is one of the key 'damsels in distress' throughout the story. Man... Just typing it all out like this makes me think I probably missed a few things.
Next play through I will give Wyll a fair shot at romance.
What are your thoughts and experiences with Wyll? I'd love to talk about him.
