Looking for a book cover artist

Hello. I am writing an action thriller series (90s over-the-top action movie), and I am having a hard time finding an appropriate cover for one book, let alone several. The vision I have for the series is literally what you would imagine a 90s over-the-top action movie featuring a federal agent who is so ridiculous that it's unbelievable. Yet, he's 100% genuine and the most loyal friend you could ever have... black wardrobe, sunglasses indoors, ponytail, etc. He dishes out roundhouse kicks like grandma hands out cookies.

If this sounds insane, that's because it is. And I'm planning on 6 of these bad boys plus a few short stories. So, if you are a cover designer who can bring the goods, oozing 90s swagger and more than a little danger, then let's talk. I don't need all of the covers today, but I start publishing early next year and I have a reader magnet going up in a month or so.

I don't have a large budget. I was looking at premades around $60-100 for the reader magnet. Maybe a little more for the novels. For something designed specifically for this series, I could do $100 for the reader magnet and more for the novels. I am also going to need paperback and audiobook covers. Please include add-ons for that in the pitch.

An author contemplating doing his own narration. I have questions.

Hello. I've been publishing as an author since 2013. All of my audiobooks were performed by narrators, some of whom have done much bigger books than mine. Early on, it was hard to find people who had great voices and quality recording capabilities. Nowadays, it is overwhelming with how many options there are that sound amazing.

With that said, I am writing something that I'm unsure is marketable and worthwhile for a narrator to spend time on. It's action-adventure inspired by 90s action movies. It's ridiculous. The main character is 110% confident and about 60% self-aware. He's somehow effective, and that feeds his confidence. It's over the top, and the humor comes from his ridiculous worldview (ego). Is it marketable? I have no idea. I started writing it as a joke for the people I work with. I kind of fell in love with it, so instead of a story, it's going to be a book.

Here's my question: I have a home studio setup in my office that I use to make synthwave, rock, and orchestral music. It's all instrumental because I don't sing well. I use Studio One, a focusrite solo interface, and I have a couple of mics (Shure SM58 and Audiotechnica AT2020). I do not have soundproofing in my office, which means the condenser mic will pick up a lot of room noise. The Shure has a much lower input volume. I can boost the volume in my DAW, but I'm concerned the gain staging will induce signal noise if I go too far. I'm looking for suggestions for what I can do with my current setup to create something that sounds great. The narration will require the soft, gritty voice of 90s action stars like Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal, so speaking louder might affect the performance too much.

I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Ran 3.1 miles / 5K for the first time in over a decade

As the title suggests, I did that yesterday. I feel pretty good about it, considering I started running five weeks ago. My goal was to hit that mileage by the end of July, but I guess I'm a bit of a psychopath for trying to push myself when it was 92 degrees at 10 am. Besides, it was America's birthday, and I couldn't hit that on my birthday last month.

I've seen some articles and such on YouTube that suggest strength training for runners. Honestly, I never considered that as necessary because I assumed that running would strengthen the muscles through endurance (also, I never researched running like I am now). BUT I don't want to get a gym membership. I'm hoping for suggestions on great exercises I can do at home that require little or no equipment.

I do own some things: a 30 lb set of dumbbells, a 25 lb kettlebell, a power tower for pull-ups, dips, and leg lifts, a flat bench, and a walking pad. I also have a 5 lb macebell and a 10 lb club bell. Do you have suggestions on what I can do with that equipment, or without any equipment, that will help me out? I don't have any injuries to work through, but I would like to prevent any as training gains in intensity.

Thank you.

How running is affecting my diabetes (I think)

Hello. My name is Drew and I am 44 years old. I spent 20 years in the US Navy, where fitness was one of those things that took a back seat to the mission. I wasn't special operations, or anything that required peak fitness. I was an Aviation Electrician working on the F/A-18. The computers could get heavy, the tool boxes were usually heavy, and the diet was whatever you could consume in whatever quantity before getting back out there and fixing the next aircraft. The life of an AE was feast or famine. You either had a crazy workload and had little time in the shop, or the opposite. During the periods of inactivity, we usually ate junk and "conserved our energy" for when the real work came.

As you can guess, I became one of the fat sailors who could lift heavy equipment and carry it long distances, but my uniform didn't look very good as it was cradling my gut.

I retired 6 years ago, and my fitness level got much worse. I retired at 240 pounds, and within a year or so, I was up to 265. I worked the graveyard shift and stayed awake with a sugar high. I went from fat to what the crap happened to me fat.

And then the weight started falling off, and I thought it was from working normal hours and less stress. I got down to around 225 and began having pain in my abdomen and lower back. I couldn't sleep, so I went back to sugar rushes and caffeine. After almost a month, I finally went to the doctor, and I was diagnosed as a diabetic. I had been prediabetic for a while, but my body finally gave up and went full insulin-resistant. I was put on insulin and other drugs, and I thought that was going to be my life.

Well, after a few months of wearing a glucose monitor and jabbing myself with insulin, I decided I would try to get my act together. I did it with diet first, but I noticed that every little cheat set off my monitor. It had no chill. I knew what I needed to do, but I didn't want to do it.

And then I decided that at 44 years old, I needed to do it if I wanted to have any quality of life as I got older. I decided that I would train for a 5k and become a runner, running 3-4 days a week.

This was a month ago.

In that time, I went from sedentary to running 1.5 miles 3 days a week. My goal is to run a 5k three days a week by September and do my first official 5K around that time. I know how to train to get where I need to be, but I didn't realize how it would affect my blood sugar. A lot of "wisdom" on the internet suggests that putting stress on your body may cause blood sugar spikes. I've had the opposite (while not taking my insulin), so I thought that was interesting. On days I misbehave with food, I do get spikes, but some of those little cheats here and there have not had a great impact on my blood sugar. I'm not saying I'm rolling back the clock with my diagnosis, but I do think that activity levels is helping me with my blood sugar control. I'm a month into this journey, and I don't think it's safe to make a declaration yet, but I'm excited to see where I'm at in 3-6 months.

The scale is not dipping yet, and my legs are sore, but my overall feeling has improved quite a bit in this first month. I hope that encourages any of you in similar health conditions looking to begin a running program.
