Neat little trick

Was building [[Rhox War Monk]] for a Pauper Brawl thing I do with my friends. We find 60 cards much easier to brew, assemble, sleeve, test, and adjust than 100 and you can build the same commander differently depending on whether you're tuning it for 1v1 or free-for-all PLUS commanders that don't really work in 4 player get new life as 1v1 decks ( ex: Psychatog as a dimir control shell)

With that aside, something neat I came up with was using [[Open the Gates]] and running [[Citadel Gate]] , [[Manor Gate]], and [[Sea Gate]] as a way to both hit my land drops and color fix for a build-my-own dual.

It's not flashy, but it was a little deckbuilding triumph I was proud of. Definitely something I'm gonna start implementing in any 3 color deck that has green.

Another example is running a small eldrazi spawn subpackage in [[Erinis, Gloom Stalker]] + [[Street Urchin]]. [[Eldrazi Repurposer]], [[Malevolent Rumble]] (while running stuff that doesn't mind being milled like [[Moment's Peace]] and [[Lignify]] / [[Ambush Viper]] so I have removal that can be picked up by it too), [[Rapacious One]], [[Writhing Chrysalis]] (both chunky threats). This way I'm still ramping with the spawns but can still generate fodder to be sacc'd to the background even when I don't have artifacts.

Just wanted to blab about some neat stuff I came across while deckbuilding.

What are some little pieces of tech / small synergy packages you've all came up with in your builds?

Changeling challenge

Saw a rarran video about a Hearthstone Tavern Brawl :

https://youtu.be/m6AETvJnvLs?is=8miwj9UFyIaJRvqP

Was curious how it would work in magic. Way I see it the only thing you would need to do for Magic would be to have an errata of : "All creature cards have changeling."

Obviously

[[Caven of souls]]

[[Ancient Ziggurat]]

[[Concealed Courtyard]]

[[Eye of Ugin]]

are all auto-includes imo.

How would you break this challenge?

Heritage Pauper

https://youtu.be/-pdpeSZlXns?is=\_jGzXAxho\_pacT8e

Saw this Eternal Durdles vid discussing Heritage, a splinter Legacy format which excludes UB and any supplemental sets (commander, Modern Horizons, etc.)

What would a Heritage-equivalent look like for Pauper?

Looking at MH3 alone, all the salt inducing cards like

[[Refurbished Familiar]], [[Sneaky Snacker]], [[Nyxborn Hydra]], and [[Writhing. Chrysalis]] are all gone.

So are the 1 mana landcyclers from LOTR, but what else changes?

Ramp payoffs

Looking to build [[Ruby, Daring Tracker]] and curious what the ramp payoffs? ik in 60 card for Gruul Ramp payoffs are [[Avenging Hunter]], [[Writhing Chrysalis]], and [[Nyxborn Hydra]]. idk what else beyond that though. Do I just run a bunch of landcycler creatures and [[Malevolent Rumble]] type effects?

Black Waltz or Longshot

I'm looking to build a Red - aligned deck to fill out my pod in a box and am stuck between these two.

Main things I like about [[Black Waltz No. 3]] is that stuff like [[Syphon Mind]] burns the table while being a [[concentrate]], [[Risky Shortcut]] burns the table for 4 while restocking your hand, [[Hopeless Nightmare]] also burns the table for 4 for 1 mana, [[Tyrant's Choice]] burns for 6. [[Vampire Neonate]] and [[Creeping Bloodsucker]] are repeatable damage sources alongside [[Pestilence]] and [[Crypt Rats]].

[[Longshot, Rebel Bowman]] is the commander I have honestly investigated less in comparison. The static discount is far from nothing, but idk if being Mono R is too limiting for it to be effective.

I am admittedly new to PDH as a format tho, most of my magic experience comes from 60-card Pauper. Will take advice / recommendations / personal lists.

UW proxy of US Agent, John Walker

Saw [[US Agent, John Walker]]. I'm gonna build a PEDH deck with it but wanted to make a UW version.

Used the art from [[Cathar's shield]].

Wanted people's opinion on the Name / flavor text.

I got no idea what card to use for the token, maybe just a zoomed in version of the art? 😅

Unplayable or never "Good"

Was watching H puzzle, he had a series called Unplayable where he takes an archetype in Modern, gives a deck tech, then describes the evolution and downfall (usually via either power creep, silver bullets being printed, or some combination of both) of said archetype. He also made an addendum to the series talking about decks that were never "good".

The important thing to note is that in this context, an archetype's strength / viability is defined as its ability to consistently place high at large tournaments / high REL events.

What are some archetypes that were once top tier that are now unviable? The kind that maybe would have worked a few years ago, but if you sleeve it up and bring it to a large event now, don't realistically expect to make it to day 2, let alone go positive. What caused their respective downfalls? Was a key card in the strategy banned? Was a powerful hate piece printed? Or did power creep lead to there simply being better things to do in the format?

What about decks that are / were mid or never "good"? Decks that might be seen as a casual pick at an FNM or might have a once in a blue moon 5-0 list, but aren't serious contenders to consider when meta prepping for a large event.

Archetypes that fundamentally changed as a result of bans / hate pieces / power creep / etc. would also help! The only examples I can think of is Golgari Glee-scale shifting into Jund Careful Pili-Pala because of the [[Basking Broodscale]] ban & Bant / Jeskai Inside Out combo into Boros Spirits because of the printing of [[Spirit Mascot]] and [[Pursue the Past]].

Decklist links and explanations would be greatly appreciated!

Also, please don't leave comments that boil down to "Nuh-uh! X / Y / Z is good bc I do well using it @ FNM / small store tournament / kitchen table!:
