Mill Max Long Term Use

I’ve been testing Mill-Max sockets (i think these are 0305) on some of my boards as a way to add a hot-swap option to PCBs that weren’t originally designed for it.

So far I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how solid they feel. I also redesigned the plate so it attaches directly to the PCB, which gives the switches some extra support and makes the whole setup feel pretty stable.

What I’m really curious about is long-term durability. Has anyone here used Mill-Max sockets for a few years or gone through a lot of switch changes with them?

I’m especially curious about whether the sockets loosen over time, pull out when removing switches, develop connection issues, or have problems with certain switch types.

I know it’s probably never going to be quite as robust as soldering directly to the PCB, but my initial testing has been better than I expected. I’d love to hear from anyone who has used them long term.

Problems streaming to HTPC

Hey all, I've been a Plex user for a while now, this is the first problem I've run into that I can't seem to figure out.

I was away from home for 5 or so weeks and 1 week in I started getting alerts that someone had logged into my account from a bunch of locations. I quickly changed my password, setup authentication and removed all authorized devices from my account. Weeks later when I got home I started to login to all my devices again.

My main server and HTPC is a 2012ish Mac mini. I have a backup server running on a mini PC. The Mac mini is my main living room TV I normally use Plex HTPC to watch, we also have various other devices around the house with Plex.

After logging everything back in the HTPC on the Mac mini was giving me playback errors on everything, TV shows, movies, music. However the regular plex app and web app works fine. I started testing things out and it turns out any Plex HTPC app on any device wouldn't play any media, but the other style of apps worked fine.

I decided to start up the backup server and give that a test and it works perfectly.

I tried looking at the logs from the main server and captured a Plex HTPC log during a failed playback. Plex successfully chooses the media and queues the playback, but MPV/FFmpeg fails while opening the secure stream URL.

Immediately afterward, Plex reports: A critical QtPlayer error occurred; the player cannot recover

Error code: 4294967283

Short of deleting the server and reinstalling, any clues about why this may suddenly be happening?

Board Game Dashboard

I’ve been working on a little Home Assistant project, a full-screen dashboard for my Board game collection.

I recently discovered there was a BGG Sync integration available through HACS, and used it to bring my collection into Home Assistant. From there I built a visual “game shelf” with the cover art and separate views for base games and expansions, as well as a details page with the cover art, rating, play count, and other info pulled from the integration.

The main thing I wanted was an easy way to pick a game and log a play.

The play flow is pretty simple:

Choose a game, start a session, let Home Assistant track the time, then add players, winners, notes, and a manual duration if needed. Nothing posts to BGG right away. The play only gets logged when I press the dedicated “Post to BGG” button, so accidental sessions can just be canceled.

I also added some collection stats and recent-play info along with a page just for expansions for the games. I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out so far.

Next I’d like to add a random game picker, filters for player count or available time, and maybe a “what should we play tonight?” mode for a wall tablet. I also need to determine what is needed when i "start a session" Adjusting the thermostat if the location is the dining room (need to also add location for the play sessions), which lights to turn on, and maybe even link this to Melodice somehow so it starts playing background music based on the game.
