We are NOT Obligated to Assimilate to their Culture

Sudanese-Australian lawyer and human rights advocate Nyadol Nyuon has sparked debate after saying she has “no intention of assimilating” during an ABC National Forum discussion on migration and Australian identity.

Nyuon argued that assimilation is different from integration, saying immigrants can respect Australia, its laws and institutions without abandoning their own cultural identity. She also challenged the idea of a single “white culture,” noting that European cultures such as Italian, French and Greek are distinct from one another.

Her comments have reignited a broader debate in Australia over multiculturalism, belonging and what immigrants should be expected to adopt when becoming part of Australian society.

Great Local Appliance Services

Every once and a while, people in this community are looking for advice on who to go to for certain services.

I just want to throw out good vibes about Papa Joe's Appliance Repair (John, at 810-360-2876) and Clean&Green Dryer Vent Experts (Kim and Tim, at 734-377-4175).

We've used John at Papa Joe's multiple times now, for fridge, dryer, dishwasher, and oven questions (not all at once!) and he has always been speedy, honest, and great with his advice. I really couldn't recommend a better appliance repair service, and he is local and knows everyone. That's how we got introduced to Tim at Clean&Green!

John came over to look at our oven, and while he was over, peeked at our other appliances and checked out our dryer vent, which we had barely noticed. He pointed out it was as old as the house, and could use a look. He recommended Tim at Clean&Green, who came over a week later and immediately addressed the problem.

Their prices are very fair, they are wonderful people, and they have been helpful at recommending both solutions and good products.

You may not need this advice now, but you probably will one day!

Avoiding Enshitification: Custom/old-school ranges and ovens

Look, we have tried. We've tried to seek out good new applicances - particularly electric, because we want them to be fixable and because we want them to be better for the environment - but this is getting stupid.

I buy a new major appliance for the kitchen, like a washing machine or dishwasher or oven, and 18 months later, something screws up.

I am tired of this junk. It isn't good or sustainable. It's junk.

I am not made of money, but I'm also so tired of repurchasing appliances because they are embarrassingly bad. Can someone point me in the direction of old-school ranges and/or ovens that last - like REALLY last - or, to a company or artisan (regardless of price) that makes appliances that really are meant to last for at least 10 years? Because the items I could currantly purchase from Bosch, GE, LG, Maytag, etc etc - they are all the same old junk to me right now.

Point me in any direction, any price. I'm grateful for any suggestions and any recommendations.

PACE Foundation - What is this?

I just saw a commercial for the Pace Foundation which is supposedly attempting to support Michigan kids, because "politics shouldn't get in the way of education". Which honestly, makes me highly skeptical of whatever this organization is trying to sell/promote.

Can anyone shed light on this organization, and what they're promoting?
