Should I start with TryHackMe or Hack The Box as a beginner?

Hey everyone,

I'm fairly new to cybersecurity, working toward a SOC Analyst role, with pentesting as a possible longer-term goal. I've got basic IT/Linux knowledge but not much hands-on security experience yet.

I'm currently on TryHackMe Free Plan (just started, exploring both SOC Level 1 and Jr Penetration Tester paths). For someone in this position, would you recommend:

  • Starting with TryHackMe and then moving to HTB?
  • Jumping straight into Hack The Box?
  • Or using both at the same time?

Mainly interested in networking, Linux, enumeration, web security, privilege escalation, and eventually SOC/blue team skills alongside some pentesting basics.

Would appreciate advice from people who started at a similar level — and any specific learning paths or room lists you'd recommend.

Thanks!

Trying Raw Accel for Valorant — Sens/DPI advice?

I want to try Raw Accel mainly for Valorant and was wondering what you guys think about my setup.

Currently I’m on:

  • 1600 DPI
  • 0.22 sens
  • eDPI: 352

I’m thinking about lowering my sens a bit because I feel like I’m more consistent on lower sens overall. My idea is that Raw Accel + a lower base sens could give me the control of low sens while still letting the acceleration handle faster flicks/turns when needed.

Has anyone here played Valorant with Raw Accel + relatively low sens?
Would love to hear what settings/curves worked for you and whether you actually found it beneficial.

couldn't get a job after btech, doing mtech in cyber security now, here's my plan

So i couldnt get a job after my btech, and because of my parents i ended up doing mtech in cyber security. honestly i don't mind it though, figured might as well make something out of it.

what i have in mind rn:

  • doing the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate + TryHackMe alongside it
  • after that gonna study for and give Security+
  • after that want to build some projects for my resume

can you guys suggest some project ideas? something that actually stands out.

also is this roadmap even good? genuinely scared of ending up jobless again after all this, so if i'm missing something or doing this in the wrong order please tell me.

thanks

New to Risk of Rain 2 - Any tips for getting better at solo?

Hey guys,

I'm new to Risk of Rain 2 and I've been loving it. I usually play Seeker, but I recently got Void Fiend and I love that guy.

I bought the game 3 days back and I mostly play with friends, but whenever I play solo it's so hard. I just keep dying.

Any tips to improve or something?

Need Career Advice: How Do I Get My First Cybersecurity Job After M.Tech?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently doing an M.Tech in Cybersecurity and I'm trying to figure out the best path to actually land a cybersecurity job after I graduate.

There are so many certifications out there (Google Cybersecurity Certificate, Security+, CySA+, CEH, PNPT, etc.) that I'm honestly getting overwhelmed and don't know what's actually worth doing.

For those of you already working in cybersecurity:

* Which certifications helped you get your first job?
* What skills should I focus on besides certifications?
* Should I spend more time on TryHackMe/Hack The Box or on certifications?
* What projects or home lab setups helped your resume stand out?
* If you were starting over today, what roadmap would you follow?

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who've been through this. Thanks!

Road + Train Blueprint or Separate Rail Network?

Hey guys,

I'm having a bit of choice paralysis and wanted to get some opinions before I commit to rebuilding everything.

I've been building roads to all of my factories as I expand since I mostly play solo. Now I've finally unlocked trains, and I'm trying to decide how I should integrate them.

Option 1: Build a blueprint where the train line runs above my existing roads, so every new route has both a road and a railway together.

Option 2: Keep the road network as it is and build a completely separate train network.

The roads are already aligned to the world grid, and from what I've seen, train tracks seem pretty easy to build using the auto-connect feature. So I'm wondering if it's even worth forcing the railways to follow my roads.

For those of you who've built large late-game worlds:

  • Do you run your trains alongside roads, or keep them completely separate?
  • Did you regret either approach later on?

I'd love to hear what worked for you and why. Thanks!

How do you take revision-friendly notes for cybersecurity courses?

I'm currently doing the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate, and the course includes both theory and hands-on practical labs.

I'm finding it difficult to make notes that are actually useful for revision later. If I write down everything, the notes become too long, but if I only write key points, I'm worried I'll miss important details from the practical exercises.

For those of you who have completed cybersecurity certifications (Google, CompTIA, Security+, etc.), how did you take notes?

  • Did you keep separate theory and lab notes?
  • Do you use a note-taking app (Obsidian, Notion, OneNote, etc.) or handwritten notes?
  • How do you document practical labs and commands for future reference?
  • What note-taking method helped you revise efficiently before exams or interviews?

I'd appreciate any tips, examples, or templates that worked well for you. Thanks!

Paper-like screen protector feels good but the sound annoys me Any alternatives?

So I bought one of those paper-like screen protectors because the normal glass one was way too slippery for writing. The writing feel is better now, but the scratchy sound it makes while writing literally irritates my whole body

Any solution for this? Maybe another screen protector or different Apple Pencil nib/tip that feels better without the sound? Also looking for options available in India. Thanks!

Beginner project: Kali VM attacking a target machine + Snort logging attacks — any guides?

Hey everyone,

I’m new to cybersecurity and trying to make a small lab project for learning. My idea is:

  • One Kali Linux VM will act as the attacker
  • A target machine/VM will be monitored using Snort
  • I’ll use different attacks and scans to see what logs and alerts Snort generates

I mainly want to understand:

  • How to properly set up the lab/network
  • How to configure Snort rules and logging
  • Which beginner-friendly attacks are safe to test in a lab
  • How to analyze the generated logs

Is there any good beginner guide, YouTube playlist, blog, or walkthrough for this kind of project?

Thanks!

How Do You Plan Your Factories/Buildings in Satisfactory?

So I played a bit of Satisfactory before, but never got super far into it. Now I wanna start fresh and actually make cool-looking factories/buildings instead of just spaghetti everywhere

One thing I’m curious about is where you guys get inspiration for your builds. Do you look at real factories, YouTube builds, Pinterest, other players’ worlds, or just freestyle it?

And my main question:

When making big factories, do you:

  • build the structure/building first and then try to fit production lines inside it OR
  • make the production setup first and then build a nice building around it afterward?

Hi everyone, coming back to Palworld after around 2 years
A lot has probably changed since I last played. I know there are new ores, mining sites, and some new mechanics, but I’m pretty out of the loop.

Any tips or important things I should know before starting again?
Also, looking for advice on good base locations — like what resources should I prioritize nearby and what makes a strong base spot now?

Would appreciate any beginner/returning player advice 🙌
