It was quite a while ago and the bits I remember are patchy, but hoping it may be enough for someone to recognise what I'm talking about as I really enjoyed it and would like to read it again.
I'll bullet point the bits I remember.
*Female detective who lived with her children. (I think it was 2, possibly both sons?)
*She was investigating either a local murder or disappearances
*There was snowy weather and she crashed her car then disappeared
*New detectives began looking for her and questioning local people
*She was being held captive in a specially built underground room
*Culprit was I believe either one of the strange locals who had been questioned, or the strange adult son of one of the locals)
