Convince me to ED!

Hey yall! Apologies if the flair is wrong

I’m a senior in high school who is finalizing their college apps, and after a lot of consideration, I really think I want to apply ED to USC. Before I make the decision though, i’d love to hear some opinions about my worries and prospects from some current students or alumni to finally convince me!
———

For some context, I am first gen, low income from Illinois. My tuition would be covered if I was accepted, so that’s not necessarily a worry. i’d most likely be trying to major in any of the programs offered in Annenberg (Journalism, Comms, Advertising/PR), and minor in something creative, (I.E, digital studies, cinema, music industry, etc), or something humanities based (I.E. English, History, Philosophy, etc)

———

Some things that are important to me are…

- networking/employment opportunities

- quality/prestige of education, programs, and facilities (Specifically within Annenberg)

- LGBTQ+ safety and resources

- resources for low income/first gen students

———

Additionally, i’d love to know about activities at the school, especially in the realm of…

- the arts, especially performing arts like drama, a capella, musical theatre, etc

- music, on campus and greater local/underground music scene

- party and/or bar & club culture

- Sporting events

- Student activities, clubs, and general social life on campus.

- greek/frat life on campus specifically, if anyone has any insight into that

———

My main issues stem from distance, social culture, and cost of living outside of school (food, transportation, etc). If anyone has any experience grappling with these issues and can quell these worries, i’d love to listen.

Happy and hoping to hear all of your guys’ thoughts soon!

Thoughts on UI for a student like me?

Hello all! I’m a high school senior from Illinois finalizing my college list, and the University of Iowa has come across my list! From what i’ve seen online and heard from some friends who attend, the school seems like a pretty great institution that has some nice sounding programs for what I’m interested in, but i’d love to know what some current students and alumni would think of the school for a student like me :)

———

For some context, i’d most likely be trying to major in something like Journalism or Communications, and minor in something creative, (I.E, cinema studies, music), or something humanities based (I.E. English, History, Philosophy, etc)

———

Some things that are important to me are…

- networking/employment opportunities

- quality/prestige of education, programs, and facilities (Specifically in the Journalism/Communications school)

If it helps anyone with their responses, i’d also love to know how the hawkeyes stack up against Iowa State in regards to both academics and social life

Happy and hoping to hear all of your guys’ thoughts soon!

Chance me except i’m a slightly above average student not shooting for prestige

Howdy yall! As the title reads, i’m pretty out of place in this sub, and i’m mostly doing this just because i’m curious to see where other people would gauge me, if they have any recommendations on where I should apply, and if I have a shot at some of my reach schools, even if they’re out of the T30!

Without further adieu, here are my stats:

Personal Background

- White male (LGBTQ+ but that doesn’t really matter)
- Illinois resident
- Slightly above average public high school
- first gen college student (and first gen high school graduate)
- low income
- single parent household

Intended Major: Journalism

Academic Stats

GPA (School uses a 5 point scale)
- UW: 4.12
- W: 4.61

ACT (planning on retaking)
- 29 composite
- 18 math
- 26 science
- 34 english and reading
- 10 on writing

5 APs so far; 9 in total going into senior year
- AP Euro: 4
- APUSH: 5
- AP Lang: 5
- AP Macro: 3
- AP Pre-Calc: did not test
Will be taking AP Lit, AP Gov, AP Psych, and AP Stats this year

Extracurriculars

- 4 years of marching and concert band, 2 of which were spent in my school’s highest level, audition based honors ensemble
- 2 years of choir in my school’s honors bass ensemble
- also managed the social media page for the choir department
- 4 years of audition based A Capella in two of my school’s groups
- Music honors society member
- 4 years of Drama, assistant stage manager + Thespian society member
- 2 years of school newspaper
- 1 year of school social media committee
- 1 year of my school’s art magazine production club

No awards 😔

—————————

Another thing of note, my transcript generally has an upwards trend. As for my GPA, my parents went through an incredibly turbulent and violent separation that lasted nearly my entire sophomore year, and the effect that had on my (already poor and unaddressed) mental health issues, and by extension my schoolwork, basically permanently handicapped my transcript. I had a very solid bounce back though, so hopefully that may help (going from low B’s and C’s sophomore, to nearly all A’s my junior year)

—————————

Colleges

As of right now, like I mentioned before, i’m really not looking for prestige. Due to my financial situation, personal preference, academic stats, and some other factors i’m not really interested and feel that I don’t click that well with many schools in the T30, like the HYPSM + other ivies (with the exception of Northwestern Medill, which I’m considering applying too)

My top schools at the moment are Mizzou and Ohio University (Athens), but my reaches include…
- UW Madison
- Syracuse (Newhouse)
- UIUC
- American University

Phew! I think I’m finally finished! Please feel free to share your thoughts and recommendations! I’d love to hear about any colleges I should consider, any ways I can improve, and any tips that would help on my college application and decision process! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope to hear yalls responses soon!

UW Oshkosh vs UW Eau Claire for a student like me?

Hello all! I’m a rising high school senior from Illinois doing some college research, and both UW Oshkosh and UW Eau Claire have come across my list! From what i’ve seen online, the schools both seem like great institutions that have some nice sounding programs for what I’m interested in (I’m specifically interested in them due to their ACEJMC accreditation), but i’d love to know from either some current students or alumni of either school what they think would be a better fit for a student like me :)

———

For some context, i’d most likely be tying to major in Journalism, Advertising (Oshkosh), or Communications, something under that umbrella. I’d also like to minor in something artsy (I.E. film, music, media studies, etc) or something humanities based (english, history, philosophy, etc).

———

Some things that are important to me are…

- networking/employment opportunities

- quality/prestige of education, programs, and facilities

- LGBTQ+ safety and resources

- resources for low income/first gen students

———

Additionally, i’d love to know about activities at each respective school, especially in the realm of…

For some context, i’d most likely be trying to major in something like Multimedia Journalism, Communication Studies, or Multimedia and Film Production. Some things that are important to me are…

- networking/employment opportunities

Additionally, i’d love to know about activities at the school, especially in the realm of…
