7 YOE software engineer moving to Germany for Master’s — is finding a job realistically doable?

I’m an Indian software engineer currently in the U.S. and I’m considering moving to Germany for a Master’s in Computer Science/AI. I already have a German Type D visa, so the move itself is not hypothetical anymore.
I’m trying to make a realistic assessment of my employment prospects after/during the Master’s, particularly given the current German economy.

**My profile:**
27 years old
\~7 years of professional software engineering experience
All of my professional experience is in the U.S.
Currently working as a software/full-stack engineer
Experience with .NET/C#, C++, AWS/cloud migration, CI/CD, databases, DevOps, etc.
Currently earning around $105k in the U.S.
Bachelor’s in MIS
Currently working in the U.S.
Planning to do a Master’s in Germany focused on AI/Data Engineering
No major gaps in employment
I would be moving to Berlin
I intend to learn German seriously rather than relying on English-speaking jobs
As my German is already B2 and would immerse myself to get C1 by March 2027 I feel it should be doable.
I’d also like to get a working-student position during the Master’s so that I can gain German work experience, references, and a local network before graduation.
I’m **not expecting to walk into Germany and immediately get a €100k English-speaking senior role**. I’m willing to take a step down in compensation initially if necessary and I’m specifically interested in German-speaking positions once my language skills are good enough.
My main question is:
**Given this profile, is finding a full-time software/AI-related job in Germany after the Master’s realistically doable?**
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who:
Hire software engineers in Germany
Have moved to Germany with several years of non-EU experience
Have gone from a Master’s/working-student role into a full-time position
Know how German employers view 5–10 years of U.S. software experience
I’m aware that the German economy is currently sluggish, so I’m not looking for reassurance. I’d genuinely like to know whether my profile gives me a reasonable chance of establishing myself in Germany over a 2–3 year timeframe, or whether I’m underestimating how difficult the market is.
Also, if there are specific things I should do during the Master’s to maximize my chances of getting hired, I’d appreciate those suggestions.

German Student Visa Experience – Chicago Consulate (July 2026)

I had my German student visa appointment at the German Consulate in Chicago today, so I thought I’d share my experience since I couldn’t find many recent posts.
Overall, the appointment was much simpler than I expected.
I arrived a little early since I had scoped out the building the evening before (the entrance is a bit hidden, so I definitely recommend finding it ahead of time if you’re staying nearby).
The appointment itself was basically just document collection.
I had brought a large binder with a lot of extra supporting documents because I was expecting questions about my study plans, finances, previous education, IELTS, etc. Instead, the staff member looked at the binder and told me they only needed the documents listed on the checklist.
They collected the required originals, organized everything into a folder, and that was pretty much it.
I asked whether my checklist was complete and whether they needed anything else from me. She said the checklist was complete and that they would contact me if they needed additional documents. She also mentioned that the application would now go to the head of the visa department for processing.
The only question I was asked was when I planned to fly to Germany. I said around September 25, and she replied that it might not be ready by then and that October 1 was a more realistic expectation. I just said that’s fine and adjusted my travel plans accordingly.
There were no questions about:
Why Germany
Why this university
My finances
My study plans
My previous education
My two IELTS reports
Or anything else I had prepared for
Now it’s just the waiting game.
For anyone preparing for the Chicago consulate: I’d still recommend bringing all your supporting documents just in case, but don’t be surprised if they only ask for the checklist items.
Has anyone else recently applied through the Chicago consulate? How long did it take from your appointment until you got your passport back?

German Consulate Chicago Appointment

I have a student visa appointment at the German Consulate in Chicago next week, and I’m not sure what to expect.
I’ve already gone through the official checklist and have all of the required documents. I’m also bringing additional supporting documents (admission letter, transcripts, IELTS, education history, etc.) just in case.
My main questions are:
Is the appointment mostly administrative (document submission, biometrics, etc.), or should I expect an actual interview?
If there is an interview, what kinds of questions are typically asked?
Do they usually review your documents while you’re there, or do they just collect everything and process it later?
How long did your appointment take?
Any tips for someone going to the Chicago consulate specifically?
I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently had a German student visa appointment at the Chicago consulate.
Thanks!

Winter semester 2026

Hello everyone,

For those of you who have already been accepted to universities and are planning to move to Berlin, when do you think is the best time to start looking for and booking accommodation?

I’m particularly interested in hearing your experiences with student dorms and private apartments. How far in advance did you secure your housing, and would you recommend booking as early as possible or waiting until closer to the start of the semester?

Admit for a uni in Berlin

I got admitted to a university in Berlin, but I’m having trouble finding student housing. My university shared some off-campus resources, but I’m still confused about the process.

Any suggestions, websites, or tips for international students looking for accommodation in Berlin?
