piston/rod advice

what does this discoloration mean? #1 top bearing fell off when taking off the cap should i be concerned? and how can i replace rod bolts at home? how easily should pistons be able to rock? if pistons measure good would you guys reuse everything?

i don’t have a bore gauge small enough for the rods and it’s taking me awhile to get used to the micrometer, forgive me for the mouthful, first time doing any of this so any experienced advice helps out a ton, thank you! 🙏🏻

03 civic d17a2 rod is #1 cyl and cap is for #3

cleaning burnt on head gasket off block?

2003 honda civic d17a2, cast iron sleeves and aluminum block

for days and days i’ve been trying to clean this leftover gasket on the block - plastic razor, brake clean, acetone, out of everything wd40 seems to have worked best with the razor. i got off all the main stuff but there’s these bits left on the sleeves and lining the cooling jacket that don’t seem like they want to come off. first time doing this and im trying to not use something too abrasive in risk of ruining the block. thinking of maybe running over it with emry cloth or similar, what can i do?

does my head need to be resurfaced/replaced?

i’m basically rebuilding my d17 rn and have spent lots of time trying to clean the gasket off, i keep noticing these super small scratches. most of them are surface level and you can’t feel them, but a couple of them are deep enough for my fingertip to barely feel it. i haven’t gotten off all the gasket and gunk but so far the head/block mostly shows good in spec with warpage, maybe the head is worse than the block. also somehow, my block is chipped in a really weird spot. how do you guys clean off mating surfaces or is it just supposed to take forever? is it repairable or am i cooked? can post/explain more if needed i’m not k swapping lol

honing help

2003 honda civic ex auto d17a2

first time doing this, just trying to get opinions on wear and steps moving forward.

pulled the head off planning for piston rings, valves, gaskets, bearings, timing etc. i’ve never honed cylinders or anything near this, i can definitely still see the crosshatch and running my finger over it feels smooth but the vertical grey marks have me wondering. gonna try and get a bore gauge but am still learning how to use it, should i be good to just do an at home hone job?

needing engine advice/opinions please

maybe a dumb post but i want your guys opinions. i got my lil 2003 civic ex auto (192k) its my first car and i LOVEEE her. everything i’ve learned ab cars has been bc of her. that being said, i believe my head gasket is bad, along with piston rings and valves.

i’ve had coolant flow issues forever but haven’t wanted to face it being the headgasket, then past month or so i’ve had misfire issues mainly with cyl 2. i replaced spark plugs other small stuff and i’ve finally ran my ass around 3 mechanics. 1st said valve adjustment, 2nd said engine is fucked (he only compression tested the one cylinder came out to 60, i did it afterwards and think all were 140-155 cold engine), last place went in with a bore scope and said valves and piston rings are bad, engine needs replaced. none of them went in super detail which is a bit disappointing, but now i’m debating on what to do.

i’ve never dug into the engine past the valve lash so it’s all pretty new to me but i have been learning a lot lately. i have more or less 3k to spend with this, don’t know what the best course of action is. i’m thinking for this car, i wanna clean her up have light mods, some slight boost but nothing insane yet. k swap crossed my mind but i don’t know how viable it is for me currently.

she drives pretty good, haven’t noticed sluggish acceleration or anything like that. idle is shaky uneven and bad(esp at startup) and you can hear/see “spitting” thru the exhaust but no smoke. check engine light randomly has turned off 3 times.

should i just open the head up and see where i’m at? repair if it is repairable but replace if not? if so should i stick with d17 or swap to another? i’m just kinda hesitant about swapping bc this engine has done worlds for me even in just 2 years.

apologies for the rant, just wanted to make sure there’s background info and really wanna get back to driving. i’ve drove very little with this misfire and miss feeling confident behind the wheel. ANYTHING at all helps, much much appreciated 🙏🏻
