Why don't pakistani dog owners train their dogs?

I am not saying all Pakistani dog owners do this. I know some dog owners who really keep their dog in check and make sure it poses no nuisance to neighbours.

But in the past few years, i have had to have conversations with several dog owners in my neighbourhood to stop their dog from barking. In all these instances, these people had dogs that would bark for even up to an hour on and off, and then continue like this through the day. I've seen it in other neighbourhoods too. The dogs will continuously bark at every cat, insect, construction worker, car and cycle, and seems like no one from the house would come out and check on it at all.

Worst part is when you talk to these owners, they say "it's a dog! What else is it supposed to do?" It is entitlement pure and simple. I also have developed a dislike of dogs because of this, but even I can see that this is neglect for the poor animal. It is not normal for a dog to be barking for hours on end each day.

You can't even make the argument that it is a guard dog, because if it is barking at everything (to the point that you start ignoring it) then it is not a very good guard dog, is it?

I'm just so sick of these dog owners, who get a dog and don't bother to train it and make it everyone else's problem. I don't know how they are not embarrassed or ashamed.

Other neighbours will sometimes tell me to just shut the windows and get headphones, but I am a light sleeper and I need ventilation in my house. And again, why am I being expected to adjust to the noise of an actual ANIMAL rather than these neighbours being considerate?

I am beginning to think I was in an emotionally abusive situation.

I (28F) recently met up with an ex (35M) in another city. We stayed good friends after the break up three years ago because he was overall nice to me and helpful, and I'll admit i had some residual feelings for him. We hung out, all was going well.

To preface, I knew that he had temper problems. When we dated it was common for him to yell or escalate a situation even if I tried my best to approach it calmly. I used to always be a bit on my guard around him to not make him angry but at some point he convinced me that just because I am scared or anxious does not mean it is abuse or that it should be registered as such. He'd also cuss me out and swear at me when angry, and convinced me eventually that it isn't that big of a deal. Typing it out, I feel like i must sound very silly to have believed it.

Well, we broke up and met recently and I at some point, calmly, told him that I didn't like certain things he had said to me earlier in the day and that it was hurtful. Mind you, I was already trying to tread lightly at the risk of angering him. He immediately went defensive and instead of asking any follow up questions, steadily got more and more riled up (which he says is because he is autistic and cannot pick up social cues).

Something about me is i struggle to regulate extreme stress, and end up hitting myself to cope, although when it happens it feels involuntary. It's very rare that it is triggered in front of someone else. I started panicking and felt like my heart was about to burst and so I hit myself, to which he started hitting himself too (i assume to prove a point and make me feel bad but he denies this). When i reached out to stop him, he pushed me away and i fell backward on the bed. He said he doesn't like being touched when he is angry, but didn't apologize. I thought he was about to hit me. He got angry that I thought that about him and I told him to leave.

I called him out as best I could because he really does not let me speak. Or he always thinks what he says is the objective reality and the facts, and accuses me of wanting false positivity and not wanting to deal with his negative emotions (not true btw, i have been there for him multiple times when he is depressed or hurting). He insists externalizing anger is a healthy thing, as long as no one is physically hurt.

Once i also started shouting, then he started throwing it in my face that I was now yelling and name-calling and that I'm being sexist by insisting that it is only harmful when he does it. It's worth noting though that i was only reacting to his behaviour. I do not communicate this way with other people, even while arguing.

Anyway, at some point he started going through some snacks I brought from the grocery while looking for his tobacco, and he threw all my things on the ground. I got very upset at this and felt somewhat... Invaded? Idk how to describe it but it was a very icky feeling. Eventually he left, and before he left I spit on the ground at his feet because he kept calling me horrible things. I regret doing that, but in the moment I knew it would be very offensive to him. I have never and would never do this to anyone under normal circumstances.

I reached out to him to apologize and we agreed to meet. We met again once more to discuss the situation, and he said a vague sorry but refused to say that anything he did was objectively wrong. He said that i was in fact the one who had no right to touch him when he was angry to get him to stop hitting himself. He said my things he threw were inexpensive items, and so it doesn't really matter that he threw them. It ended in another screaming match because i was begging him to please consider my feelings and he started shouting. I said some very awful things to him after that because I was sick of him and his words, and i threw any words at him that i felt would hurt him. He now maintains that i am abusive by the way, and says I am the one who was wrong.

I have blocked him from everywhere but I have to ask, is he right? Am I over reacting? Was all of this really a big deal, and am I right to feel sad, scared and slightly traumatized? I feel like i made excuses for him for so long that I am incapable of actually feeling my true organic feelings because in my mind I am still scared of him. His words and jabs come back like a gut punch and I become so emotionally confused in the validity of my feelings.

I am also afraid of letting the full weight of it settle on me, because then I will have to contend with the fact that I may have been manipulated by someone i loved so much. He was a close friend and I hate myself for yelling at him and saying those awful things. I would rather I am just over reacting rather than have to live with the aftermath of being in an emotionally abusive relationship.

PS I did post this on another subreddit initiatially but have not received a lot of support or advice there, so I am hoping for more help here.

I think I was in an emotionally abusive situation. Please advise

Thoughts on the na-mehram debate in adoption?

I was recently sitting with my family and they started discussing the child of one of our relatives who is adopted. She's a teenager now, they adopted her when she was a baby. And my family starts talking about how she is turning 18, she needs to start keeping her distance from her dad.

According to my cousin, their relation is no longer dad and daughter, but mehram and non-mehram. Mind you, this is the same cousin who once said about our actively pedophile uncle who died "un ke gunnah maaf hon saaray Ameen" 😭

I was so shocked at hearing all this and how they were discussing it. I got very upset and left the room, because I was like this is so disturbing. Is she suddenly going to become a sex object for her dad at 18? It felt like such objectification and sexualization of a relation that is so pure and beautiful.

And why do Pakistani families suddenly start caring about mehram non-mehram dynamics when it's non issues like this? Why not when there are pedophile uncles roaming freely and happily? Why don't we care about children's safety and why do we have to sexualize them, girls especially? Our priorities are so completely messed up and the way we view sexual dynamics i just... I don't even know anymore.

Anyway can anyone relate to what I am saying? Does anyone have extra perspectives to add to this?

Anyone else agree that Jack Black was miscast in The Holiday?

The Holiday is one of my favourite movies of all time. I adore almost everything about it except... Jack Black.

Whenever I see other people agree with me on this, they'll usually say something fatphobic or rude about his looks, which i completely disagree with. Firstly, because it isn't appropriate to say those things, but secondly because I think Jack Black is a perfectly good-looking person. My issue with his casting is that I genuinely don't think he has the kind of earnestness and sincerity required for the role. It always feels like he is a moment away from making a bad joke.

It does not help that he is cast opposite Kate Winslet, who is acting circles around him. They have no chemistry to boot and i don't know which casting director was moved to hire him opposite her. Because Iris' plot is divided between Black and the screenwriter guy, their romance isn't given any time to develop properly. And honestly, I am glad, because I always cringe when he is on screen trying to deliver this dialogue that sounds stunted and awkward coming from his mouth. I always find myself waiting for his scenes to be over, and in the dozen times I have seen this movie, it only gets worse on each rewatch.

It might have been better had he been able to play a platonic role for Iris, so he could be the goofy guy in peace without the pressure to also be sincere and soulful. She doesn't need a love interest for her arc anyway.

The more obvious casting choice was John Krasinski, who has a minor role in this movie and has both comedic timing and the romantic chops to play the role. I wish I could watch THAT version of this movie.

My question is if anyone agrees with me? Is there anyone out there who can validate my annoyance with this casting choice please? 😅

Edit: I need to stress again that I don't care that he is not a "hallmark hunk" nor do I find it unbelievable that Iris would fall for him. It is his awkward line delivery and forced sincerity that bothers me. Also i should stress that I love this movie so you don't need to convice me about how he helps Iris in her character development.

ANOTHER edit: i am muting notifications on this now, since a lot of the comments I am getting now are condescending. I made a comment saying "to each their own" and it was downvoted. Sorry I didn't know Jack Black was paying y'alls rent like that. Seems this is a touchy subject for people lol i may check back on this post later
