Started my beloved collection a few months back. What do you think so far?

I started collecting late spring/early summer and it’s officially become an addiction. I’ve always had that “thing” I was obsessed with. Growing up it was mostly video games, then music, then basketball. As an adult it’s been women, drugs/substances, and sneakers (in that order chronologically) 🤦‍♂️. I gotta say this has been the most fun/rewarding vice I’ve ever had.

Needless to say I’m excited about movies and collecting. The only problem is there’s no one in my life I can talk to about the subject (my girlfriend tries bless her heart lol), so I felt the need to share my pride and joy here with Reddit. I welcome any and all questions, comments, thoughts, criticisms, roasts, and recommendations. I just like talking movies and collecting. Thank for taking a look!

\*it might look like unorganized based on the first couple pics, but I have them in alphabetical order with boutique stuff, box sets, and steel-books first and then normal releases. It goes Arrow Video, steel-books, other boutique labels (Radiance, Umbrella, Curzon, etc) Criterion Collection, then everything else.

Blind pick ups from 2nd B&N sale haul

  1. First on my list is Exotica. I saw the Atom Egoyan collection on the Criterion Channel and thought his stuff looked intriguing, but never got around to watching anything. I love podcasts where funny people talk movies and Exotica was recommended by comedian Sam Morril on the latest episode of his pod with Mark Normand called We Might Be Drunk. His taste tends to line up well with mine and he made it sound pretty damn cool. In fact, All That Jazz was mentioned on that episode as well. They talk about that movie quite a bit actually.

  2. I wouldn’t say I’ve been looking forward to owning these titles specifically for very long, but I’ve been wanting to expand my horizons and diversify my collection for quite a while. I lean a little too heavily towards horror, thriller, crime, noir, neo-noir, etc.

  3. All blind buys. I’ve heard a lot about the Three Colors trilogy and the work of Fellini and Wim Wenders ever since I started looking into Criterion. All these titles get picked up in the Closet Picks videos a lot. Three Colors sounds intriguing, Fellini is a legend, and Paris, Texas is often described as one of the most beautiful films ever made.

  4. The Stanley Kubrick box set!!

*sorry if this was too long winded I’m pretty new to Reddit and don’t have other social media

Man would I love to see Paul Schrader box set someday…

With all the excitement around the big sale and the announcement of the Stanley Kubrick set I’ve been thinking more and more about other directors and how much I would love to see a Criterion Collection Paul Schrader Box set.

The Criterion Collection and channel have really helped educate me and develop my taste in films in a short amount of time. Paul Schrader is probably my favorite director and I credit CC with helping me come to that realization. A couple years ago before I subscribed to the channel and began collecting I was only vaguely familiar with the man’s name mostly due to his association to Taxi Driver. I may have never ended up being exposed to masterpieces like Blue Collar(!!), Mishima, and First Reformed. Or at least not in the proper mind state to fully appreciate them. Personally I would put Hardcore, Auto Focus, Affliction, Light Sleeper, American Gigolo, and more in almost the same category but that’s just me.

Seeing these films in 4k and given the full on Criterion treatment would be a dream. We have Mishima of course but as far as I know that’s it for 4k Schrader. Is this a real possibility in the near future? I have no knowledge of who owns the rights to what films and what’s possible/imminent and what’s not. From what I understand, a lot or at least some of Michael Mann’s work isn’t likely to be released in 4k anytime soon for those kind of reasons.

Are there a lot of other Schrader heads out there who feel the same way? If not, what are some other directors that you feel strongly about in a similar way?

My very young but rapidly growing collection

Technically I started collecting two months ago, but most of these were purchased in the last couple weeks so things are spiraling out of control quickly. Fuck it, it’s this or I’m collecting overpriced sneakers so I’m telling myself I’m saving money here 🤣. Nothing too impressive (yet) but I felt the need to share it with someone. Nobody I know in real life gives a shit, even thought my lady tries her best to pretend bless her heart…

All comments, suggestions, or recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading. Crazy how important this stuff is to me all of a sudden.

*A few blu rays in there unfortunately (Election 1 & 2, Running On Karma, Seconds, and Red Rock West), but they’re all films I had to own immediately or was dying to see and weren’t streaming anywhere.
