Brawl video puts embattled Detroit police commissioner back in the spotlight

Detroit Police Commissioner Darious Morris is making no apologies for what he did — or did not do — when he found himself in the midst of a violent brawl happening Tuesday in the city.

"He got what comes behind it. He got a hard lesson, and I was not about to stop it," Morris said of a man who was seen being repeatedly punched after a brawl erupted.

The Detroit Police Department is aware of the video, according to a spokesperson, and is actively looking into what happened.

"You don’t have to get the police involved all the time," Morris said. "This is a situation where there was mutual combat."

Detroit Zoo welcomes new baby gorilla born on Sunday, only the 2nd gorilla born in the zoo's history

More from WXYZ here: https://www.wxyz.com/news/detroit-zoo-welcomes-baby-gorilla-born-on-july-12-2nd-gorilla-born-in-its-history

The Detroit Zoo welcomed the second baby gorilla born in the zoo's history over the weekend.

According to zoo officials, the female was born to first-time mom Tulivu in the late evening on Sunday, July 12. The mom, baby and baby's father, Mshindi, are all doing well.

“As a first-time mom, Tulivu made this about as smooth as a pregnancy can go,” Detroit Zoo Chief Life Sciences Officer Mike Murray said in a statement. “Over her eight-and-a-half months of pregnancy, she voluntarily trained to receive routine ultrasounds through positive reinforcement, giving our veterinary team a clear window into the baby’s development the entire way.”

In August 2024, Motema was born at the zoo, a historic birth as it was the first gorilla born in the zoo's history. Mshindi is a father to both, meaning the new baby and Motema are half-siblings.

“To have a second gorilla born here at the Zoo, and be a half-sibling to Motema, is incredibly meaningful for our team and for this critically endangered species,” Murray said. “Every birth in an accredited zoo helps strengthen the conservation story for gorillas. This is the result of years of careful, coordinated work, and I am so proud of our entire team who worked tirelessly along the way to make this happen.”

First 5 PWHL Detroit players speak. Here's what they had to say

Full video at the link here: https://www.wxyz.com/sports/pwhl-detroit/hear-what-the-new-pwhl-detroit-players-said-after-signing-with-the-team

The first five players signed to be with the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) Detroit team spoke to the media on Tuesday after the second phase of the expansion process ended.

Detroit signed Daryl Watts to a four-year contract, Cayla Barnes to a three-year deal, forward Hannah Bilka to a two-year deal, forward Britta Curl-Salemme to a three-year deal and forward Jesse Compher to a three-year contract.

Watts was offered the EFO, and ranks second all-time in goals in the league with 32 and third in points with 62. She spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Sceptres and one season with the Ottawa Charge.

All of the players who spoke shared their excitement about joining Detroit and the team that PWHL Detroit General Manager Manon Rheaume is building.

Watts said this was her first time going through expansion as a free agent, and she had a few calls with a few teams to see where she would be a best fit.

"Had a Zoom call with Manon and her team and they blew me away. From that moment on, Detroit was my favorable destination, and I was lucky enough that she offered me the EFO and it all worked out," Watts said.

"Super excited to be a part of Detroit and what Manon is building. Just so cool to see the takeover tours and how well they've done in Hockeytown. It's not called Hockeytown for nothing, so, just really excited to be a part of a sports city," Bilka added. "I think it was a no-brainer seeing some of these players come and just be a part of the talent and to build something part of an inaugural season is super special and definitely something I take a lot of pride in."

Watts also said that she can't wait to play with the other four players who are a part of the foundation in Detroit.

Both Rheaume and Curl-Salemme addressed her signing with the team and the backlash that fans have had over her signing and past activity on social media, and her partnership with an anti-trans organization.

"I obviously acknowledge that there's some upset fans, and I get that it's not something new to me, but I just think of my time in Minnesota and the experience that I had there, and it was overwhelmingly positive. I got to really immerse myself in that community and get to meet fans and just see people eye to eye and be humans together, and I think that's what's important, and that's what I plan to do in Detroit as well," Curl-Salemme said.

Rheaume said that she understands some of the fans have strong feelings about the signing, and they don't take that lightly. She said they put in time talking with people who have played and coached Curl-Salemme, and "and everybody that talks about how she is as a teammate and how she treats every player on the team, and, we felt confident within the teammate we were bringing into our organization."

Compher was asked about getting to live and play in the same city as her brother, J.T., who is a forward for the Detroit Red Wings. She said it was a bonus when it came to signing in Detroit.

"For me, the main focus was this hockey organization that we're building here in Detroit. The four signings that happened before me and what Manon is building as an organization was definitely my first priority," Compher said.

Curl-Salemme also talked about what drew her to the city, saying that the passion of the city for hockey is a huge bonus.

"I know there's gonna be a ton of people really excited for this, this new team, and they're gonna show up for us, and we're just gonna give them our best product," Curl-Salemme said.

There were also reports that Hilary Knight, the captain for Team USA and for the Seattle Torrent, would eventually join Detroit in a sign-and-trade deal with PWHL Las Vegas. Vegas announced Knight's signing on Tuesday.

Rheaume didn't comment on the report, saying that Knight is under contract with Las Vegas.

TV20 Detroit will be new TV home for the Detroit Pistons starting this fall with free over-the-air games on TV

The Detroit Pistons announced today a new local media television rights agreement with Scripps Sports beginning with the 2026‑27 NBA season. The move returns Pistons basketball to free, over‑the‑air television for fans throughout Detroit, metro Detroit and the state of Michigan. Per team policy, terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, WMYD TV20 Detroit, owned and operated by The E.W. Scripps Company, will become the official local broadcast home of the Detroit Pistons. TV20 Detroit will produce and air all locally available pre-season and regular season games. Fans will be able to watch games for free via over‑the‑air television as well as through participating cable and satellite providers. Scripps, which operates both TV20 Detroit and WXYZ – Detroit’s ABC affiliate – will pair WXYZ’s award-winning local news leadership with TV20 Detroit’s broadcast platform to deliver comprehensive Pistons coverage for fans throughout the market.

“This move is for our fans. They have been huge all season and throughout this playoff run. Their energy and support have lifted our team and helped fuel our resurgence,” said Pistons Owner Tom Gores. “It’s a new era of Pistons basketball and we want to make sure that more people in Detroit and throughout Michigan can be part of the journey.”

“This partnership with Scripps Sports is an exciting moment for the Detroit Pistons,” said Arn Tellem, Vice Chairman of the Detroit Pistons. “Basketball has always been deeply woven into the fabric of our city, and we’re proud to expand access to our games. We look forward to partnering with Scripps to deliver outstanding broadcasts and programming that reflects the energy, pride and passion of Detroit.”

The agreement marks the Pistons’ return to a primarily local broadcast television home for the first time since 2005 and removes barriers for fans by eliminating the need for a paid television subscription to watch locally televised games.
