Talk me out of buying a self leveling spring loaded tamper, please [$45]

It seems that on Amazon, the only way to get a 58.3mm tamper quickly is to buy a spring loaded one. I already have a 58mm tamper, which isn’t a perfect fit for the standard portafilter in a Quick Mill Pop Up (58.5 vs 58). Mostly just want someone to say it doesn’t matter, unless you feel really strongly that it does. In which case, let me know. I should have gotten a basic tamper from Clive Coffee, but forgot.

New additions to my tea and coffee setup

Recently upgraded from Chemex and Baratza Encore to Fellow Opus 2 and Stagg XF pourover plus Oxo ORB. For the first time at home I was tasting fruit notes in coffee. That made me wonder what I was missing from my Philips 4300 superautomatic and to see what was possible with an endgame grinder. So here’s my updated coffee and tea station.
Left to right: Wolf kettle, Fellow Opus 2 grinder, various brewing vessels and whatnots, some of the few teas I have, Mazzer Philos grinder, Quick Mill Pop Up espresso machine, and Oxo gooseneck kettle.

First Pourover of Perc Coffee's Decaf Colombia Nestor Lasso Ombligon

Drinking what is probably the most expensive coffee I've had at home. $35ish for a 13 ounce bag. I definitely taste the raisins and pineapple, unfortunately, the experience is degraded by weird taste I'm getting, likely from the EA decaf process. Some EA decafs have this issue, but not all. This is sadly one of them.

200F water, 4.5 grind setting on Opus 2, 20 grams coffee to 360ml water, Fellow Stagg XF.

Looking to upgrade from Philips 4300 to Profitec GO, but need grinder advice [$550]

Hi all,

Recently upgraded my pourover setup to Fellow Opus 2 and Stagg XF, which significantly increased clarity. Looking to do something similar with my espresso setup. The Philips is fine, but I want something great, not just fine. Seems like the Profitec Go is a definite step up and suits my tastes better as I mostly drink espresso, not Americanos or milk drinks these days.

I’m looking for advice on what grinder to pair with the GO. Seems like Varia VS4 is a good choice, but Eureka Mignon Zero 65 AP also came up as a possible. I mostly drink light to medium roast, and only decaf (regular coffee unfortunately makes me feel ill, sad, I know, but good decaf is just as tasty, IMO).

Anywho, let me know what you think about the Go as well as single dose grinder to go with it, pun intended. Budget for machine is $1200 and max I want to spend on grinder is $550.

Pourover brew of Kuma's Decaf Ethiopia Natural Suke Quto.

4.5 grind setting on Opus 2. 20g to 360ml (half of full Stagg XF serving). Their tasting notes say blackberry jam and red apple. I get sweetness on the finish that might be construed as something like that. I will try 4.6 next time to see if that increases clarity. 4.3 and 4.4 produced good coffee, but not so revealing as tonight’s cup. Either way, this is good coffee. Would buy again.

Issues With Lance Hedrick’s Zuppa Lunga method

Hey y’all,

So I’m following Lance’s recipe and using the twist method to allow water to flow onto the puck before tightening the waterfall fully onto the puck basket. Problem is that invariably, the top paper filter (and Able metal disc if I’m using it) floats to the top of the puck chamber. What am I doing wrong and is there a better method to make sure that there are no air gaps in the water column before applying pressure to soak the puck? Thanks!

With the Able disc in place, once this happens, it tilts at an angle and prevents water from hitting most of the puck. With just the paper filter, the bed is disturbed which causes uneven extraction.

Any Other Decaf Drinkers?

Unfortunately, I cannot drink regular coffee as a single pourover session makes me fill ill for rest of the day. :( But I love the smell and taste of coffee so drink decaf. I currently get my beans mostly via Bottomless subscription and have about 50 light to medium roast decafs in my queue.

Anywho, writing this post to connect with other people here that like quality decaf beans and wondering what your go to shops are, or if you're using a subscription, which one. I live near Portland, OR so plenty of local options, but not particularly convenient.

Hold Fast Coffee’s Decaf Mexico Using Stagg XF

2nd pourover of this coffee with Fellow Opus 2 set to 4.15. Brew time was about where I want it (between 4 and 4:30). Should dial grind back up to 4.25 (or even higher) though, I think, as I’m going for more clarity of flavors vs heartier brew for now. Also maybe a touch of sourness, which bolsters the hypothesis of too fine a grind.

Anyhow, this is pretty good coffee. Definitely going into my queue rotation on Bottomless. Also really liking my Fellow Opus 2 grinder and Stagg XF pourover vs older Baratza Encore and Chemex setup.

Hold Fast Mexico Decaf First Soup Shot

First soup shot of new coffee. Hold Fast Coffee’s Decaf Mexico. I think the Opus 2 is pretty well dialed in for Oxo ORB soup shots of this coffee at 5.25. Tasting notes say plum and maybe if I squint my eyes really hard I can get there. 😂 Will see tomorrow if pourover is more revealing. Altogether though, this was a tasty brew.

Also worth noting that the ORB fits almost perfectly on top of the Fellow Stagg XF flask. The stock container that comes with the ORB is definitely too small for full soup shots.

Opus 2 Arrived Today!

Grinder arrived about an hour ago. Set it up. Set it to recommended pourover setting. Brewed a mug. I think it needs to be dialed a tad more coarse as the pourover wasn’t quite done in time. Supposed to take between 4:45 and 5:15, but still had water to go at 5:30 mark. Pulled the filter off and so far, impressed with the flavor vs Baratza Encore. Definitely nicer to use and dial in.
