Anyone step away from using room correction software?

I've used Sonarworks for about two years now and relied heavily on it. I moved into a new place and was able to improve my treatment and make the room a bit more optimal. Things aren't perfect, but it's better than what I had before.

I went back to using Sonarworks and eventually decided to shut it off one day. There was a certain clean sound that went away with my Kali IN-8 V2s, but my audio just seemed to more open.

I've got an awful 120 Hz resonance from my room and desk, and I had just learned to ignore it. I feel like my mixes have actually improved since I stopped relying on Sonarworks.

Has anyone else had something like this happen? I'm just curious to hear about other people's experiences.

Years of pro tools disconnecting from control surface.

I'm on Windows 11, but this is an issue that goes back years and also occurred on Windows 10.

Pro Tools will not keep my control surface connected at all. Other DAWs don't give me this issue. I've owned three PreSonus FaderPort 8s, and I now own a Behringer X-Touch. The issue still remains, and it's driving me crazy. Restarting Pro Tools and the control surface will fix it for a very short while, and then it stops working again. Even that solution doesn't always work.

Can anyone please help me solve this issue?

Things I've tried:

  • Running Pro Tools in administrator mode. (It worked for a few days after doing this, then stopped again.)
  • Trying different USB ports
  • Using powered USB hubs
  • Trying both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0
  • Using different USB cables
  • Reinstalling Pro Tools
  • Reinstalling the control surface drivers
  • Checking my power plan to make sure it doesn't put USB devices to sleep
  • Disabling "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for the USB hubs in Device Manager

How are you going about calibrating your studio sub?

I've seen so many different methods online, and wanted to see what methods or levels others go for. I usually calibrate my system to 80db and follow the blue sky method of calibrating. I've seen everything from 3-6db below the mains, 1db below, exact level as the mains, just go by ear with what sounds good. I'm actually using a sub for the first time and have really been enjoying it for post production style work.

From Blue Sky:

"Feed 40-80Hz pink noise signal to the left channel only. Adjust the subwoofer level control until the subwoofer reads 85dBC (slow) at the mix position. The meter will bounce around a little, so you will need to do a mental average (I tend to filter out the peaks in my mind, so I don’t set the sub too hot). The right channel should measure about the same and no additional adjustments need to be made."

Behringer X-touch universal with pro tools on windows?

Anyone using this setup without much issue? The latest update for faderport 8 fried multiple units, so I'm switching brands. That $500 price range is what I can afford, so I'm looking at the X-Touch Universal. Any issues with windows 11 users?

Faderport 8 got all jank after latest firmware update.

My Presonus FaderPort 8 was working fine for months until I decided to update it. The faders no longer recognize my touch to activate them. Instead, the motor feels like it's fighting me as I move the fader, and the DAW shows the device's input constantly cutting in and out. The result is jagged, stair-step-looking automation instead of a smooth curve. The faders also no longer return to Unity. Theu all jump to +5 on the fader.

A hard reset of the unit did nothing to help. The issue remained. I got sweetwater to send another and updated the firmware like an idiot. I was exhausted from the heat and work, so i wasn't thinking straight. The new unit now carries the exact same issue with the exact same behavior.

This happens in both Pro Tools and Reaper, so it doesn't seem to be DAW-specific.

Am I stressing too much over trying to get a perfect phantom center?

Speakers: Kali IN-8 V2

I think I’m stressing way too much over having my phantom center perfect, and I wanted to ask if I’m right about that. I’ve tried my best to make things as symmetrical as possible in my room when it comes to my listening position, treatment, and speaker placement. Should I be worried if it isn’t perfect or dead center for me?

I also have another issue regarding Sonarworks. The EQ is awesome, but no matter what I do, I can’t get the listening spot setting to line up with where I actually sit. My studio monitors do not have a linear volume knob, so adjusting them works more like stepped increments. Because of that, matching volume between the speakers is never perfect and is usually off by about 1 dB. I really like the sound of things when the listening spot feature is on, but it pushes my position off to one side way too much. I can work without it, but it still kind of sucks since I like what it does.

This also comes after watching a lot of reviews of Sonarworks from studio engineers. They did not seem too concerned about things being perfect, so it made me think I might just be putting too much effort into this.

Does this look ok for a home mixing room, and too many bass traps?

Using Var smoothing for my graph.

Can someone tell me if there were any actual improvements made? I'd also like to ask about my low end being reduced to the point where I have to compensate quite a bit in Sonarworks to make it audible again.

My room is 11' x 12' x 7'5" H, with my desk facing the short wall. All of my treatment is homemade, and the bass traps are made from Rockwool Safe'n'Sound. They are 9 inches thick, with four of them placed in the corners at the front of the room where my desk is located.

Is the dip most likely from me going too far and adding too much treatment? I'm trying to figure out what to do from here since I'm a bit physically handicapped, so even moving things around is very difficult for me. I'd like to know if this bass trap setup could be absorbing too much low end before I decide to move everything around again.

Opinions on just buying packs of rockwool for bass traps and just leaving the pack in the corner?

I believe the surface of the packaging can be reflective. I’ve also seen some debate somewhere about whether the plastic compresses the material too much to be effective. Have any of you tried this with success, or should I go ahead and build some form of frames? I no longer have the facilities or physical well-being to make homemade wooden panels anymore, but I’ve also been considering buying some corner shelves, filling them with Rockwool Safe’n’Sound, and covering them with fabric.

I'd just like some opinions on this. I'd like to save some money if possible since I am trying to move my post production studio to a larger room and will need more treatment than I currently have.

Wave Link 3 causing system files to act odd?

I've tried installing wave link 3 a few times to see if it's the issue. When installed, my folders and files can't be moved or renamed. Creating folders and files works still. Things seem to be back to normal after uninstalling wave link and it's drivers. Anyone else have this issue?

Izotope RX connect still broken in latest update (windows 11)

https://preview.redd.it/5kj7nw6fp65h1.png?width=468&format=png&auto=webp&s=aa53e44872162669deb0be6dca1d9202bc765e94

This issue was already present in the version prior to the latest one. With iZotope RX Connect, the “Whole File and Handles” section is grayed out and unusable. Rendering a file through RX Connect will return a clip without handles. Many dialogue editors will likely find this very annoying. I contacted both Avid and iZotope, and each company told me the problem lies with the other. It will probably be fixed in a future update (like it was years ago), or it may stay this way. Either way, I wanted to warn Windows users to be careful before updating. Fortunately, I still have my old 2024 installation working as a backup.

How many VCA tracks do you have in your session?

I'm currently working on streamlining my mix template and was wondering how others go about grouping for VCA tracks. I've got one for each major food group and every subgroup. By subgroups, I mean things like SFX A, SFX B, SFX C, Fol A, Fol B, Fol C, etc. Each one of those has its own VCA, with the subgroup VCAs feeding into a master VCA to control the entire food group.

It's a lot to keep track of, and I was wondering how you all handle this in your sessions. My projects are pretty small, mostly indie animation and audio drama work.

Kali audio in8 v2 calibration question.

My Kali IN-8 V2s sound amazing, but I’m having an issue calibrating them. The volume knobs do not adjust the level in a smooth or consistent way. Say the knob is at 12 o’clock: between 12 and 3 there is zero change, but at 4 there’s suddenly a jump in volume. The entire rotation behaves like this, where the level jumps instead of adjusting in a linear way.

Kali support refuses to answer whether this is by design or if my units are defective. Can anyone tell me if your Kali units also do this, or if mine are destined to be returned?

Which of these is better for my Kali in8 v2?

I did a measurement in Sonarworks and this is what I got for vertical and horizontal. 1 being vertical with the woofer on top. Horizontal with the tweeter on the outside. This is without EQ added.

I am on windows and got a plugin stuck between monitors. The place to click and drag it is stuck perfectly between monitors, so I cant move it anymore. Is there any shortcut to recenter it?
