Crystal Cove Barbados

I, 23 F, just finished a 5 day trip to Barbados and we stayed at the Crystal Cover. We had numerous problems starting from our arrival to the airport.

  1. We requested a ride from the airport to the hotel and they didn’t provide one. We called numerous times and no one answered. Luckily, a kind woman at the airport called the hotel to get some information and they said they weren’t providing us with a ride so she quickly found us a taxi and we are eternally grateful to her.
  2. Once we got to the hotel, the front desk man charged the card twice instead of putting the incidentals and full summary on one bill so the fraud unit halted the card for use. We explained that the fraud unit was freezing the card but we were met with an over explanation as to why a card was needed for incidentals when we are titanium members…
  3. Once we settled in, we went to get some food and were met with cold interactions and attitudes like we were bothering them by wanting to order food.
  4. The food… the food was terrible throughout the stay. Every meal was a let down and the prices were extraordinarily high for subpar dishes and buffets.
  5. We were constantly stared at, glared at, ignored, and met with a bunch of hostility from anyone working at the resort while we watched warm and friendly interactions with our white counterparts ( we are Black Americans ). Even when we would say “hello” or “good morning” we would sometimes not get a response, especially from the female security guard.
  6. The beach was beautiful but we were constantly harassed by people trying to sell us things and services. There was a massage man who offered foot massages. I said ok to this and we ended up unclipping my bikini top without my consent. I was frozen and let him finish but he continued to harass me for my information so he could come to my room later to “hang out.” This man was friends with the people who worked at the hotel so he was there everyday and it made me scared and uncomfortable. He also insisted my mom bring him orange juice because he was hungry and tired and proceeded to continuously ask me for my information after she left to get him some juice.
  7. Asking for a taxi through the hotel was double the price of the taxi which is just annoying but whatever.
  8. We were upgraded to a suite which was great! It was a cute loft with a king sized bed on the second floor. However, the second floor bathroom smelled of sewage. The air conditioning was not always reliable and had a mind of its own. The tv’s in my mom’s room would turn on and off on full volume at random times of the night.
Overall, I give this stay a 3/10 and the only positive was really the beach and water sports that were included. Other than that, we decided to go off the property for some meals because I couldn’t keep stomaching the awful food accompanied by the awful service.

Why are the employees at my resort so short and rude?

I, 23 F, am a black American vacationing on the west side of the island. This is my second time in Barbados and most likely my last after this trip. Since day 1, most of the hotel staff have treated my mom and I like we are a bother to them even though we’ve gone out of our way to be polite and friendly. However, we are met with glares, stares, snickers, and over explanations like we do not understand basic things. We have watched them all be extremely friendly and kind to our white counterparts while we are obviously judged.
We’ve decided to leave the resort a few times for food and such and everyone outside of the resort, except for Lime Grove, are very kind and attentive. So what’s going on at this resort and why are we discriminated against by people who look exactly like us?
