[IIL] 80s Slice of Life Rom-Coms With a Little Camp

Some of my favorite movies include:

1. Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985)
It's just a low-stakes, fun dancing movie with a sweet romance at its core. I love the neons, the music, and the view into 80's culture.

2. Modern Girls (1986)
A beautiful and fun shot into 80s nightlife, though the themes are a little more adult in this one. I love the set decor, the neons, and the characters in this one.

3. Sixteen Candles (1984)
One of my favorite movies, definitely less stimulating than the other choices though. I love John Hughes films, but when they're sweeter. (The Breakfast Club is not as sweet IMO, though still an amazing film)

4. Can't Buy Me Love (1987)
I like the premise of this one, and the peek into high school culture during this time. I absolutely adore the fashion as well.

I'm trying to overcome my anxiety, but I can't tell what is dangerous anymore

Hi friends!

So as the title stated, i've been forcing myself to overcome my anxiety by being more spontaneous. Not in an unsafe way of course, just in a "for the plot" kind of way. But i've gotten to the point now where I can't tell what is just my anxiety talking, or my intuition.

For reference, there is a club event I want to go to in NYC (I live in NJ and have commuted to the city before) but none of my friends can go. I have gone to concerts and broadway shows plenty on my own... but this event is from 10 pm- 3 am. So by the time I got out I would have to most likely uber home or wait in Port Authority for the earliest bus.

Both options generally are not the SAFEST for a 23 yr old woman (the Uber probably being the safest). But now i'm wondering if this is my anxiety holding me back from experiencing something that could be really fun, or my gut telling me it's not worth the risk...

Does anyone have advice on how to approach this conundrum?

Feeling like I am easy to ignore

I (22f) have struggled with going "unheard" for the majority of my life, and I was wondering if anyone has experienced this/ what you did to fix this. For context, I have always been anxious and a bit sensitive. Growing up I experienced a lot of criticism from my family due to my natural way of responding to things, and I genuinely think it has tanked my confidence.

Now I see these behaviors manifest in my friendships, especially when I am hanging out in big groups. I struggle to jump into conversations, and when I eventually do, I end up going unheard, getting talked over, or getting a less than positive response. This isn't ALL the time, but it happens more than I'd like. It's often when i'm talking about something, people will literally cut me off well into what I am saying to start their own conversations. I am making this post because I had my tipping point today, and I need a change in my life.

I guess my main question would be how can I practice more confidence in conversations, and actually feel heard? My other question is if anyone has experienced this as well... I just would like to know i'm not alone ig.

Tell Me Your Favorite Animal Everyone Else Hates

Hi friends,

I recently have learned a lot about Vultures making them easily my favorite animal, specifically how vital they are to stopping the spread of disease... and it has been opening my eyes to more areas of the animal kingdom that have unfairly bad reputations. Creepy crawlies, Disney Villains (Hyenas), bad omens (Black cats). I personally love animals, so I would never dislike or harm any of these creatures, but I am aware of the general public perception surrounding them.

I am wondering: what is everyone's favorite misunderstood creature? I love going down internet rabbit holes about these kinds of things, so it's always fun to hear about other people's niche interests.

Thank you!

Design For Conservation Education Advice

Hi everyone!

Currently, I work as a junior designer in OOH advertising, but I’m hoping to transition into conservation or education-focused work after graduation. Is this a viable career path for designers, and are there particular locations or organizations that are worth looking into? I’d also appreciate any advice on skills to develop, portfolio pieces to create, or qualities these employers typically value beyond just design experience.

I’m originally from Jacksonville, FL, and the Jax Zoo was a huge inspiration for my love. I’d love to learn from any designers working in this field and learn more about what the industry is like. Thank you in advance for any insight!
