Lost ₹2,000 in an OLX PS5 Scam – Sharing the Red Flags So Others Don't Fall for It
I wanted to share my experience so others can avoid a similar scam.
I found a PS5 Disc Edition listing on OLX. The seller claimed he was moving abroad and wanted a quick transfer. The offer was attractive: PS5 Disc Edition for ₹32,000.
The seller asked for a small booking amount of ₹2,000 including courier charges, which I sent via a Flipkart gift card voucher. In hindsight, that was my biggest mistake. he said facing issue with his bank account and like he said he is moving so may have some genuine banking issues
After payment, the seller sent what appeared to be a DTDC shipping invoice and courier document. At first glance it looked genuine, but when I started verifying things, the story began to fall apart.
his no. - 9563578728 Based on profile image and his language looked like a punjabi person
Red flags I discovered:
- communication through voice note only, your screenshots could not help you in this case
- No valid DTDC tracking information could be found.
- DTDC customer care informed me that their AWB/tracking numbers follow a specific format and the document I received did not contain a valid AWB.
- The courier document had spelling inconsistencies.
- The QR code on the document could not be verified.
- The seller's OLX account later became inactive.
- When I questioned the tracking details, the seller stopped responding normally.
- The seller later indirectly admitted it was a scam
I lost ₹2,000 because of this but others may have lost more in similar way and chat gpt was not able to help on this, the documents looked genuine to chat gpt.
Lessons learned:
- Verify courier tracking independently before trusting shipment screenshots or PDFs and avoid chat gpt for that as in my case i used it and it provided fake results
- don’t deal with sellers directly in case of online deal use authorised resellers only even if it may cost you more but its still better than losing your money
- Be extremely cautious when a seller pushes for a small advance first.
- For expensive electronics, prefer local pickup, escrow, or buyer protection platforms.
I'm posting this because the fake courier document was convincing enough that I almost believed it. Hopefully this helps someone avoid losing money.
Has anyone else encountered fake DTDC shipment documents being used in OLX scams?
