I'm coming from bolt action, where force building is very free, and it seems like team yankee is really restrictive (comparatively). Can anyone explain how it works?

Long shot but is there anyone here that's in the program that could tell me about it? I'm planning on applying to multiple programs for the Fall 2027 so I'd appreciate anyone that could help me out.

Are there any sci-fi ship to ship combat games that aren't dead? I've played Leviathan from FASA Games and wasn't a huge fan, have heard of Dropfleet Commander but I can't find much about it online.
