SE 5 Ep 4: “Time Flies” just might be the darkest episode of Six Feet Under

SPOILERS: don’t read this if you haven’t gotten to this season yet.

As I mentioned before, this is my third rewatch and my first as a therapist. And I found this episode incredibly dark for a number of reasons, though dramatically satisfying.

Anytime you have a large party or gathering where you can have all the main characters on the show in the same setting at the same time, you have the opportunity to go absolutely Tennessee Williams with it and that's what happens in this episode.

The symbolism of the bird that won't leave. Is it a good or bad omen? George’s tortured childhood revelation, and basically every character, except David and Keith falling apart and revealing various levels of pain and degradation.

This episode was a lot and frankly, I found it tougher than even the episode upcoming where you know what happens. I would love to know your thoughts on the incidents the choices, the symbolism, the psychology and the storylines in this episode.

Poor Joe got the full Brenda experience

Did you like Joe or was he too perfect to last? He certainly became less charming in his last scene, but could you really blame him after he was betrayed by Brenda?

I am a new therapist in a practicum and I’m male and I’m wondering if you think it’s true that women prefer to work with female therapists over males?

But I don’t seem to think that’s true The other way around. I’ve had many female therapists and some male therapists and my concern is not if they share my gender, it's if they are capable and we connect but perhaps I’m missing something. should I just expect it in my practicum that I’m going to serve men and couples.?

The weirdness of season four

i’ve re-watched a lot of shows because I’ve been around a long long time, but I don’t think I’ve ever watched a show that have surprised me more on my third time seeing it then Six Feet Under, but not necessarily in a good way. The first two seasons are an absolute masterpiece, season three felt a little different but season four. It’s like a different show. In many ways.

They are really throwing everything at the sink in this season with way too many new cast members whose purpose seems to be to start new storylines, but not continue to grow the development of the main characters.

I mean, what was the point of Claire’s fake lesbianism or Keith’s celebrity Security job then George just sort of shows up out of nowhere to Mary Ruth, who repeats the same mistakes over and over again, Nate is miserable and moody, poor Joe is about to have the full Brenda experience. I feel like the only glimpse we get that’s new is into the Diaz family and even that’s kind of melodramatic. What are your thoughts?

Arthur and Ruth:WTF?

Ruth and Arthur. What was the deal here? Was he just comic relief? What were the writers thinking? What were the characters thinking? Arthur shows up in season 3 in one of the strangest pairings in the entire series. I would love to know your thoughts.

The real Tony Sirico

This actual interview with Tony about hs real criminal past is kind of amazing and while many of you have seen this before, if your old timers for the new people, it will be a revelation. you have to give Tony credit for turning his life around even if it took a long time he still pulled it off. Also, as somebody points out in the comments, he’s actually more scary in person than he was on the show.https://youtu.be/qxddINwarJk?is=CkXzCv8k9CTCMZpV

Nate’s AVM likely changed his brain and his personality in the final two seasons

I think it's likely underrated how much AVM can affect a person's behavior and change it dramatically depending on the severity. And in the case of Nate, I think he doesn't get a fair shake. As I mentioned elsewhere as a therapist, I can tell you narcissism is so wildly over diagnosed unprofessionally that it's almost funny. But in this situation, a lot of Nate's desperation, confusion and bad decisions have more than just behavioral organic shifts going on. Here's an article that goes into it.

“Having an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) can significantly change a person's behavior. Behavioral shifts can occur due to the direct pressure of the tangled blood vessels, neurological damage from a hemorrhage (bleed), the psychological toll of living with the condition, or the side effects of prescribed medications.”

Keith treatment of David at times is actually pretty troubling

I'm in my third rewatch of the show, having seen it in my 30s, 40s and now 50s. And what's remarkable is the things I missed those other times that I'm seeing now. And one of them is the disrespect with which Keith treats David at times, repeatedly calling him a doormat or a coward when there were other ways he could have expressed his frustration with David's coming to grips of being gay other than attacking his character.

I'm in the second season near the end, and perhaps it's being a therapist now, but it bothers me a lot more than it did the first two times I've seen it. Keith's anger issues aren't exactly hidden, but the kind of opportunistic nature of his seeking out David again after Eddie leaves the picture and then still insulting him is troubling. it’s not that Keith doesn’t have a good and immoral side to him, but there is a lot more of a dark side than I thought the first two times I watched.

For those who questioned the price of my Cali XL meal…

Keep in mind it was previously about $14 when I added onion rings the last time so that’s not the price jump

Cali XL combo was 14, now is $19 and change

Girl at the register admitted lots of complaints about it. does that mean the western Burger is now like $22 as a combo?
