CFI Job Market

Is it still a challenge to find a CFI job? I’m in DFW and considering to study at US Aviation Academy in Denton for CFI and II, as they have in-house examiners. I’m just wondering if it’s worth investing 15-20k for that, especially if I don’t land a job afterward.

New Internal Career website

I’m really having trouble navigating this site; it’s quite confusing. It suggests a job based on skills, but there aren’t any options to choose a level. Whoever designed this should be fired 😆

How can internal connections get you a job?

Like the title said, even with professional or personal connections within the company, you still have to go through application and interview and compete with external and internal applications. It seems like a fair competition. So how does “ who you know” help? Asking as an LM employee.

Transfer groups without an interview?

In my previous role, a few of us were transferred from group A to group B. We reported to different L5/L4 but the same L6, and we were doing essentially the same job. We didn’t request this transfer, but it happened.

Now, in my current position, how can I request a transfer to a different L5/L6 position while still being under the same L7 without a job interview and less than 1 year at current position, job duty is pretty much different?

Here’s a crazy trick to get your foot inside the door and switch it.

My team hired a new CAM as a level 3 support role for our current CAM. Surprisingly, she lacks any engineering background and was hired solely based on her project management experience. Our team is a Mechanical Engineering team, so she was also given the title of Mechanical Engineer SR, even though she has zero experience in what our ME team actually does. She is completely unaware of CATIA, stress analysis, and other relevant topics. She was given the engineering title, so she mistakenly believed she was an engineer 😆. So, she is now requesting to perform engineering tasks instead of the CAM role for which she was hired, and the manager has approved her request. If the reg was on the actual responsibilities of our engineers, she would never be eligible for even an entry-level Mechanical Engineering position because she has no ME skills like Catia, GDT etc and now she is level 3. It appears that she used the CAM position as a stepping stone to get into the company. She joined the company about two months ago.

I feel extremely unfair for those who have the ME skills and can’t get hired because they apply for the ME position.

She will probably expose herself for not qualifying soon.

When should I request to work hybrid?

I recently joined the team a month ago, and the commute is incredibly challenging. Most of my colleagues are working from home (they’ve been with the team for a while). While I don’t want to work from home, I’m open to hybrid work, such as working from home for one or two days a week or leaving early for two to three hours and finishing my work at home. Because, I find myself going to the office, sitting in my cubicle for ten hours without interacting much with others, and then leaving, which makes me question the point of the going to the office.

My back is hurting and I have no more energy after 10hrs shift plus 2.5hr commute both ways.

Find a Mentor besides Wings

How can I find a mentor besides the Wings program? I attempted to send a connect request through Wings to two individuals, but I haven’t received any response. Additionally, I reached out to a manager who indicated their willingness to mentor me on their Whitepage, but I haven’t heard back from them either, and it’s been a week. I’m specifically looking for a mentor who is part of the team that I aspire to join in the future.

Stay at Lockheed or Jump to Raytheon

I’m currently employed at Lockheed, where I have experience in project management at E4. However, the commute is extremely challenging, taking approximately 1 to 1.2 hours each way, even 1.5hr during rush hour. Considering these factors, I’m contemplating a career change to Raytheon or Collins, which offer multiple locations and are within a 10 to 30-minute drive from my home.

However, I’m apprehensive about the potential salary jump, work-life balance, 10x4 schedule, and growth opportunities at Raytheon. I’ve heard that they frequently have layoffs, although I’m not certain if this is exclusive to Raytheon. Additionally, I’m interested in overseas positions and would like to know if Raytheon has a significant number of such opportunities.

Furthermore, I’m looking for a Principal or Senior Principal position in project management. I would greatly appreciate some advice from individuals who have worked at both companies.

Predict Option Price website

Is there a website that provides an estimate of the option price when I input the stock price, the number of days to expiration, and the VIX? I would like this information to set a price limit. Currently, I am using Thinkorswim.

Possibility promote from Staff to Sr. Staff in 1.5 years for engineer?

Is it possible? I recently joined the team as an E4. My lead is training me so that he can retire early next year, and my boss also plans to retire within the next 1.5 to 2 years. I feel like this is my chance to make a big impact and secure a promotion before my boss retires. However, I’m concerned that promotions are only given at the end of the year during performance reviews. I don’t want my new boss to come in and be unaware of my contributions and take time to evaluate my work before considering me for a promotion. I’m feeling ambitious and determined to find a way to achieve my goal.

APEX Green Belt ( internal) or Lean Six Sigma Green Belt ( external)

Which one is better and more valuable? Would other companies know about APEX GB if I want to apply later?

Appropriate Way to express opportunity

I recently joined Lockheed less than a month ago and discovered that another team members are oversea that I’ve always wanted they don’t have any regs now but might in the future because the team members are already there. We report to different Senior Managers but are under the same Director, share the same job title, but I’m not entirely sure what their responsibilities entail.

Since I’m relatively new to my team, it would be inappropriate to reach out to the other manager to express my interest. I don’t want my manager to know because I’m concerned that I might be cut off (after all, why would you invest in someone who wants to leave right?).

What would you do in this situation? I don’t want to jeopardize any future opportunities.

What would you do differently if you can start over again?

As the title says, I’m new to the company and joining at the mid-level. I’d love to get your advice on what you would do—or do differently—if you could start your career at Lockheed Martin again.
Specifically, what advice would you give someone in engineering/sustainment who wants to grow, advance, and build a successful long-term career at the company?

Choose team wisely

Am I right?

If you are a level 3 and want to have fast promotion, you will have better chance in a team where almost level 4 or above because you compete with less people at the same level with you. If you’re a level 3 employee and want to get promoted quickly, you’ll have a better chance in a team where most of the employees are at level 4 or above. This is because you’ll be competing with fewer people at your own level. So, if you’re the one of level 3 employees in a team of 20 level 3 under a senior manager, it might make your promotion progress slower because you will have to compete harder.

Am I overdressed with a blazer + jean?

As a PM, I’m in office 100% and meet with people, so I’d like to look my best. I’m a bit worried about overdoing it and looking silly. I’m thinking of wearing a blazer to look a bit nicer and more polished than a suit (which is a bit much). What do you think? I’m in the mid-level position.

Got hired Level 4 and don’t know what to do.

After submitting over 200 applications and participating in numerous interviews, I was finally offered a position at the level of 4. However, I am uncertain if I possess the necessary skills and experience to perform the job effectively. I feel that my experience is limited to level 2, and I may require guidance and support from someone more experienced in my team, as I have not had any prior exposure to this area. (PM) Could you please advise me on the best course of action or if I am overthinking this situation?
