For brass, how dirty is too dirty?

Still new so bear with me: I figured reloads were just dirtier in general- but I keep seeing folks saying it could be indicative of an issue with your rounds.
All of these are being fired out of a S&W Model 29 6" and a 629 6".

I've been reloading .44

240gr XTP/240gr Berry's plated FP

.44 magnum at 23.5gr H110 with CCI LPP

.44 special at 6gr Unique CCI LPP.

My magnum's have been excellent and dead on accurate. Great ignition. The specials I'm bringing up to 6.5-7gr Unique as I feel they're a bit wimpy, even for specials.

Neither is leaving almost any unburnt powder- but I am getting soot on my cases. It's not a ton, but some cases are dirtier than others. The case mouth often has some soot covering one side, sometimes continuing down to the case head.

I'm having no issues with primers flattening, no case bulging or splitting. Is it normal to just have dirty reloads? What is a telltale sign you're getting improper results?

Just picked up a mint 29-5

I'm not an old man, but my old man is. This is the gun that started it all for me. Watching Dirty Harry ages ago with him planted that seed

I wanted the ultimate 29. Of course the 29-2 is the Harry gun, but after some research I found that the 29-5 has all of the "endurance upgrades" before MIM parts entered the fold. Plus, this was before the lock as well. Pinned and recessed is super cool, but I'm a target shooter not really a collector.

I don't really care about MIM parts, I have plenty of amazing newer guns, but I and many others consider this the peak of the model 29.

This gun has that same old story: "Guy bought it, put half a box through and never touched it again." There was almost zero turn line on the gun before I started dry firing. There was no line from the bolt on the recoil shield from shutting the gun. The trigger is nice, but still feels "new" like it needs to broken in. That's pretty crazy for a gun from the early 1990s.

Timing and lock up and perfect. Can't wait to take it to the range.

I've become addicted to .44 and I'm mad about it

My first and longtime squeeze was .38 special and .357 magnum. I recently bought a 629 and another .44 magnum and I am stunned by how much fun I'm having shooting both .44 magnum and special.

The part I'm mad about is both .44s can be sometimes double the price of .357/.38 special. I do reload and have been doing that with success, but man. It really sucks having less loaded ammo on hand!

Do you have any instances where you ended up enjoying some rather expensive ammo?

Having a lot of fun reloading .44 especially with how much both magnum & special cost.

Left side is magnums: 240gr XTP 22.1gr H110
About 39 ct (39 and one factory round I was using for reference lmao)

Right side specials: 240gr berrys FP 5.4gr Unique
51 ct

I'm sure others would say more specials to magnums but hell I sure love shooting them both.

PC 629 competitor .44 magnum and PC TRR8 in .357 magnum.

MAN I love these guns. The competitor is genuinely very enjoyable with magnum rounds. I shot maybe 100 magnums and 100 specials the other day at the range. Truly it's a good forearm workout, but tons of fun for certain.

The TRR8 is just a joy with that 8 round moon clip. Reloading is lightning fast when you get the hang of it. These scandium guns are pretty light, but with the accessories it kinda evens out.

Both with specials you could shoot all day long. If I was going to shoot mostly specials, id probably take some weights out of the Competitor's barrel under lug to help with the balance. I took two out to test this the other day and it was a considerable difference.

Getting a lot faster now that I have my powder situation sorted. H110 sure is a pain in the ass though. It sticks to everything and it's so goddamn small.

Note: S&B cases are a bitch to get primers in. Magtec are perfect.

Got a solid deal on gunbroker and picked it up Friday. Great condition. One cylinder was very slightly out of time so I peened the ratchet slightly. Carry's up good as new now.

Took it to the range Saturday. That barrel is certainly heavy with all of the weights in, but it handles factory 240gr .44 magnum no problem. I installed some Hogue tamers and shot over 50 rounds of .44 magnum & experienced zero pain or fatigue. I wasn't shooting my best, but managed to get a 1.5in group toward the end with .44 magnum at about 20 yards.

With two of the weights out, this things rips .44 special no problem. The weight definitely helps, but it'll slow you down some on the lighter rounds.

Can't wait to try some (safe) reloads in this bad boy. Compared to my Ruger redhawk 5.5in, it's a little easier with magnums. The extra barrel weight seems to do a lot.
