Milanesa de Res sandwich & Empanadas at Tito's Market

Argentinian deli/market in El Monte with really good sandwiches and empanadas. The fried chicken is also supposed to be really good but I didnt try that. Plus they have everything you could need to make Argentine BBQ! Get your sandwich with the peppers 🌶

Big Fat Burgers in Reseda

Checked this place out when I heard they were having financial troubles, wanted to come support. Fantastic SoCal burger shack vibes. Wasn't necessarily expecting anything special with the burger, but it had this excellent crust on the patties that was so crispy. Sort of smashburger reminiscent, but the patties themselves were or comparable thickness to In n Out patties. The burger as a whole was a little bland, but they had seasoning salt and Tapatio to improve things a bit. Worth it for that crust.

Owed money without realizing, now it's passed to a debt collector

I got into an accident with a rental car, went through insurance. I have a $500 deductible, so I figured my insurance (Geico) would have paid the whole thing to Enterprise then bill me. Never got that bill and forgot about it. It's a little over a year later and I got an email from a debt collector that Enterprise was looking for me to pay the $500 and passed it to the debt collector. Enterprise sent me an email that I legitimately just didn't notice at the time I guess, but I got no other communication from them at all besides that one email. Am I screwed? What do I do here? Is it worse for me to pay the debt collector?

The Godfather at Cricca's in Woodland Hills

Heard a lot of good things about this place from locals. The sandwiches are really, really big, and they have this crusty bread that's pretty good. But the ingredients are standard boar's head, and the sandwich was $20. To be fair, one half was more than enough for one sitting, so it is basically two meals altogether. Plus I imagine the residents of Woodland Hills probably don't flinch at the price. Wouldn't go out of my way for it but a solid spot for locals.

Lanchonete culture

Hello! I am writing a paper on restaurants from around the world that serve a similar social function to American diners. I am doing research on the Brazilian lanchonete, but can't find much writing online on the topic in English or Portuguese. Where and when did they originate? Is there a particular set of dishes that are especially associated with the lanchonete? Despite any similarities, what are some major differences between the lanchonete and the diner? Is there a specific culture around them that is distinct from other, similar eateries? What does the lanchonete mean to Brazilians today? Thank you in advance!

Mario's Peruvian Seafood

Probably no better place for an authentic Peruvian ceviche in all of LA. Lomo saltado was also pretty incredible.

Armon's Coffee Shop

Armon's is a little diner in Eagle Rock. They serve American/Mexican breakfast and sandwiches plus a few Thai and Chinese options, owned by a local Thai family. Recently the landlord jacked up the rent by almost 200%. They've really been struggling lately, so they started opening up for dinner service with a new menu of Thai dishes like curry, herbal soups, noodles, etc. I brought the Diner Preservation Society there to help support their dinner service last night. We were the only ones in the restaurant for most of the time, but we pretty much filled the place up. I can confidently say the food is really good. Maybe it's not Anajak Thai or anything, but everything is way better than it has to be for a diner. The Dr. Special (the stir fry) is excellent, kind of their signature dish. I also tried the Spam & Eggs, the Spam had a nice sear on it, I just loved it. Had a bit of pad see ew too and curry too, just all around great stuff, not overly expensive. The family who owns it is so nice too, the mom of the family makes these little plastic fork dolls that are too cute. I just really want this place to survive and succeed. If you're in Eagle Rock please consider checking them out. The neighborhood already has great diners with Cindy's and Pat & Lorraine's, but these guys are doing something truly unique.

Steak Corral in Whittier

Shockingly good $20 ribeye steak. Everything else was just fine, but I like the salad bar and baked potato bar (separate entities). Felt exactly like Sizzler but cowboy themed with better steaks.

Bean & cheese burrito, taquito at J&S in Montebello

This is the kind of place where locals either say it's the best thing ever, or its utter and replete garbage that only morons would ever consume. I lean more toward the former. The beans in the burrito were really nicely seasoned, has that nice molten lard quality that a good B&C should have. Store bought tortillas, nothing fancy, but man those beans are good. The taquitos also came recommended to me, they were fairly good but nothing crazy, they don't pass the bar set by Cielito Lindo anyway (which is not crazy high already). Their salsa is very good, salsa verde had a complex tanginess to it, and the salsa roja had a fierce dry heat. Plus, it's open 24 hours, so if you get drunk down at the Venice Room (and don't feel like cooking your own steak) J&S is always reliable.

Breakfast at Snug Harbor

Great little diner in Santa Monica. Fantastic sausage, perfectly cooked eggs, incredibly thick pancakes. Love the old Coke menu board. Feels like a small town coffee shop in the middle of the city.

The Diner Preservation Society supports Olvera Street!

You may remember a post from a while back from the guys at La Luz Del Dia asking reddit to help support the struggling vendors at Olvera Street. Well, after that post blew up, I got my little club together to lend our support for their now-monthly Mercado Night event, which happened last night! The DPS meets once a month at a classic LA establishments like La Luz Del Dia, though diners are our specialty of course. And what I've seen through the almost 2 years of running this club is that people do still care about these places! They want them around, and they have a good time when they're there. Maybe people just need an excuse, or maybe people just haven't thought about these old standbys in a while, but they need our help now more than ever. So quit putting it off, go to your local classic today, or they might be closed sooner than you think - and that means forever!

I found an old cookbook with recipes from LA restaurants!

I just think this is neat and thought I would share. Of the restaurants included in the book, only 9 are still around (12 if you count chains that are still around, just not in LA anymore). Do you know which ones they are? I'll give you a hint—three of them have changed their names since this book was published in 1971.

We all know that big giant donut in Inglewood, but if you ask me, Randy's is more than just an architectural gimmick, they really do have some of the best donuts in the city. Over the course of the last year, I've tried all of the most classic varieties at Randy's since it's on my morning commute. Here are my findings:

Glazed Raised: the classic variety, no nonsense, just a good old donut. It's especially fluffy compared to your average glazed from another shop. I also like that the glaze is pretty light, and has a hint of lemon rind or something. But in general I prefer cake donuts, since I like to dunk them in my coffee, and yeast raised donuts tend to get all gummy and weird instead of absorbing the coffee 7/10

Cinnamon Crumb Cake: more cinnamon than crumb, this one isn't that remarkable 4/10

Pink Raised Sprinkles: Pretty similar to the glazed raised but instead of an all over glaze there's a shield of frosting over the top. the sprinkles are pretty 6/10

Glazed Old Fashioned: my personal favorite, the flavor of the glaze comes through better than the glazed raised, and it has that great crusty quality that none of the others have 9/10

Buttermilk: similar to the OF but not as good, sometimes less evenly cooked or a little stale 6/10

Strawberry Jelly Filled: the jelly in here is very fruity, though you won't get chunks of strawberry or anything 7/10

Butter Crumb: an especially decadent raised donut, the butter is quite pronounced. Better than the cinnamon if you like a crumb 8/10

Apple Fritter: it's big and dense but it's an extremely good apple fritter, very crusty with big tender chunks of apple 9/10

Bear Claw: the most interesting yeast donut to me, the almondy filling also has little chunks of apple in it, pretty good 8/10

Chocolate Long John:the yeast ones are starting to all feel the same. If you like chocolate it's a nice twist 6/10

Glazed Twist: glazed raised but longer 7/10

Devils Food: decently rich chocolate cake flavor, doesn't quite make the top 5 but a solid effort 7/10

Honey wheat: the dark horse of the bunch, the sweetness is nice and mild, with a somewhat complex flavor. Very impressed, would order again 8/10.

One of the oldest burger places in all of LA! Two big beefy patties, pastrami, and a hot link. Take it and eat it next to the Watts Towers.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays they make really good lasagna here! Comes with either meatball or sausage on the side, plus a roll for maximum carb overload. I like to make a lil lasagna sandwich out of it sometimes.

Little diner-esque place in East Hollywood, kinda expected the food to be homey but average, was actually kind of blown away, everything was really fantastic, not a single underwhelming moment. In order of appearance: "famous" empanadas, shanghai egg rolls, garlic rice with buchon in the back (should have gotten a better photo of the buchon, best thing in this whole meal, so perfectly crispy), pancit palabok, chicken inasal, arroz caldo, halo halo.
