How Puzzle Piecey/Modular Are PTBA Systems?

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day. Recently I’ve begun getting ready to run my first ever PbTA game, having not even known what it was until I began preparing to run it. And I’ve become aware that it seems to be a framework upon which countless different games have been made.

Given that fact, how easy would it be to pull aspects from one game and use them in another? If the exact game I’m running lacks something I think another game does really well, can I just yoink the mechanic and seamlessly place it inside like a puzzle, or do I have to fine tune on a case by case basis?

Injury Rolls: How Does Long Term Surprised Work?

Disclaimer: I only own the starter set and Welcome to Roshar, as I’m wanting to get a group properly into the game before I invest further monetarily.

On the “Injury Rolls” table, several low results can cause long lasting conditions to characters. One of the conditions which can be acquired by an injury is “Surprised”. Perhaps I’m not reading the rules throughly enough (or it’s covered in the Handbook I don’t own), but how would long lasting or even permanent surprise work on a character?

The narrative suggestion is bring overwhelmed by the shock of an injury, but what would that mean over long periods of time? Every single other injury type I can picture being present over extended periods—but surprised?

How have you run this at your tables?

Do I Need To Read The Series To Run The Game?

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

Earlier today, I was at my local game store and saw a new item on their shelf that looked totally rad and was there for cheap, so I got it without realizing what it was; the Cosmere RPG Stormlight starter set. Only after I’d bought it did I realize that “Stormlight” referred to the “Stormlight Archives” by Brandon Sanderson.

Now, I’ve never read any of the Stormlight novels. I’m barely halfway through the first Mistborn novel. But I’ve been reading through the mechanics and I honestly kinda like them? If half as much thought was put into the mechanics of the game as the thought put into Sanderson’s magic system, it must be a well oiled machine when run properly.

I wanna run this game for a few friends at my local gaming store, but I don’t know any of the lore behind the world. Do the books (particularly the setting guide) provide enough information to run the game while I read The Way of Kings? I’d love to read the book first, but Sanderson seems to view a word count with fewer than 6 digits as a challenge. I plan on running the premade adventure in the starter guide first, and only afterwards begin a full fledged adventure (probably the premade one). But how far into the novel(s) do I need to be before I do that?

(New DM to Greyhawk) Immediate Impact of Dyvers Vanishing?

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day. Recently, I’ve begun DM’ing after a long hiatus and decided to use the 2024 5.5e rule set. I didn’t even know what Greyhawk was before I read the DMG, and I became instantly hooked. The adventure I’ve decided to run is a homebrew chimera of Tyranny of Dragons and Descent Into Avernus, with a lot of the setting specific information being altered accordingly.

I’ve decided that I’ll be using the Free City of Dyvers as a stand-in for Elturel. For those unfamiliar with the plot of Descent Into Avernus (spoilers ahead) the inciting incident is an infernal pact made 50 years prior is finally cashed, causing the city to be swallowed into Hell. This works remarkably well, since (according to the research I’ve done Dyvers gained its independence exactly 50 years before the “canon” year of the 5.5e Greyhawk setting.

The information I can find on Dyvers is very vague, probably intentionally so. I know that GG always intended for a more sandbox approach to gaming, and left a lot of negative space for DM’s to take advantage of. So far I’ve come up with the immediate implications of Dyvers vanishing on the central Flanaess being primarily economic. With such a massive hub of trade suddenly disappearing, so to does the money which the city had passing through it. Furthermore I imagine piracy in the Nye Dyv would increase dramatically with the absence of Dyvers’ navy.

I’m well aware I’m new to this setting, and that such an old one benefits from years of different peoples ideas and experiences. So, I’m hoping to get some advice, input, and ideas from more experienced Greyhawk DM’s on handling the sudden disappearance of Dyvers from the Flanaess. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Help Locating Reference Image Resources For My Art

Hello, everybody! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

I’ve recently started getting back into writing and art after a long period of slacking on it, until I was greatly inspired by the art of HapPiersonArt, who reimagines ASOIAF characters with historical references. Makes the whole thing feel like historical fiction in a fantasy world rather than a totally alien reality and a little more grounded.

But I’ve been struggling. Every time I use google, I’m bombarded with AI, useless articles, or a mixture of both. I’ve considered going to my local library, but I’m hoping to have digital resources I don’t have to return. Is there any reliable archive digitally available where I could find images? I imagine that there must at least be digitized manuscripts somewhere—although I wouldn’t know where to find them.

Any help or resources would be greatly appreciated!

King Edwagne of Kaldor

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

This is my first piece that I’m proud enough to show off. It’s for my up and coming Trophy: Gold campaign! I plan to try and make a mini for every major NPC, world building as I go so that I can keep the setting grounded on the people within the world rather than *just* the world.

Hoping to post more like this soon!

Cahara Redesign

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day. In preparation for my upcoming Fear and Hunger TTRPG campaign, I wanted to start redesigning characters from the game in my own style as mini figures.

My first one was Cahara, and I’ll be honest, it took me awhile. I went through multiple different drafts of the character I wasn’t happy with, and when I found one I finally liked the colors and posing took me ages. It’s currently 2:30 AM as I type this lol.

I decided I wanted his eastern heritage to be a bit more obvious, which is why I used the clothing I did. Decided to add facial hair and scars to show that he’s a bit rugged given his mercenary past and traveling lifestyle due to his Endless soul.

I’m hoping to do all the playable characters, and then start working on NPC’s. So D’arce should be next. See y’all then!

Sundered Epoch: The Blackward

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day! I’ve been doing more character design practice, and since I started worldbuilding my project has experienced a bit of a ship-of-Theseus, so I decided to start posting the “new” project alongside my design practice!

Sundered Epoch is a new project primarily inspired by Vintage Story, Minecraft, and Fear & Hunger. My goal is to make a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting with huge inspiration from the Middle Ages, aiming for accuracy balanced with cool factor. This particular design was a reason for me to practice armor.

—————————

“Ahh yes, the Blackward. Our last bastion against the Cythraul, Undead, and other enemies to Mankind; besides the Kobolds, of course. Brave men and women who defend the villages of Nadia from the creatures which lurk in the dark. They are equipped thoroughly, with our best steel and what little Blessed arms and potions our Priests can provide.”

“Most of them are Gofodwr, but I doubt that surprises you. Even if they can’t remember doing it, they still feel responsible for all of this…and I suppose they are. But I wish they weren’t so hard on themselves. But even with plentiful volunteers, it’s a very dangerous job. There’s often no more than one or two Blackward for every dozen citizens in a settlement.”

“I wanted to join them, when I was younger. Had my father’s armor and everything. Hm? Why didn’t I? Oh…well. I’d rather not dwell on it, but let’s just say when you look into the dark, you remember it when the dark looks back. You dream about it.”

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

This was my first attempt at making a visual for my current worldbuilding project Hiraeth; a Game of Thrones inspired take on the Arthurian cycles and Celtic folklore. Pictured above is Uther Pendragon, the current High King of Britannia. I’m hoping to get better at character design by incorporating it into my project as it develops, developing my skills with the medium so that I can put purpose behind my worldbuilding beyond just doing it for the sake of it.

Disclaimer for the lore: Real history is an inspiration for this project, but not the rule. Any historical details I get wrong are because I’m not a historian, and the 5th century is surprisingly hard to find accurate information on. So if you see a glaring error feel free to point it out, but know that historical accuracy was not the goal.

Lore:

After Rome pulled the last of its soldiers out of Britannia, society on the island began to return to an echo of the way it had before the arrival of the empire. Kingdoms formed around the once abandoned hill fortresses, leaving the Roman ruled cities as ghost towns on the fringes of civilization. Despite the many conflicts both foreign and domestic, one man came to rule these many tribal Romano-Briton kingdoms through diplomatic and martial prowess; Constans.

When Constans’ advisor—Vortigern the Betrayer—took the throne with the aid of the eastern Anglo-Saxon invaders, his younger brothers Aurelius Ambrosius and Uther flee the Frankish Kingdom. While safe in mainland Europe, the alliance of Vortigern fractures and the previous state of war returns, leaving the island in chaos once more.

With aid from their Frankish allies, the brother’s return to Britannia to reclaim their throne and unite the warring Kingdoms once more. While on their military campaign, they meet a young Druid named Merlin who offers his aid. Both brothers, faithful Christians, are hesitant at first; but with Gaels to the west, Picts to the North, Anglo-Saxons to the East, and Vortigern on their brother’s throne they have no choice but to accept. Using a strange ritual of the Old Ways, Merlin binds each brother’s blood and soul to one of two infant dragons from the mysterious land of Avalon: Aurelius to a red dragon he named Livia after the first Empress of Rome, and Uther a white dragon he named Albion for the color of its scales and the connection that name had to his homeland.

With their dragons, Merlin, Frankish allies, and those who had remained loyal to their house even after Vortigern’s usurping of Constans’ throne the brothers managed to reclaim their homeland and reunite the warring kingdoms under House Pendragon; named for the beasts which helped them win back their throne.

While his brother focused on ruling and maintaining order at home, Uther sailed west with Merlin and Albion to add Hibernia to their ever-growing lands. It was during this conquest that Uther Pendragon earned the title of Gael-Burner, known for his ruthlessness and liberal use of Dragon-Fire. Also during this conquest was the forging of the first and only Royal Sword of House Pendragon by Merlin, made of iron extracted from the blood of a thousand Gael’s and Dragonfire from Albion. His atrocities only ceased when he was forced to return home after High King Aurelius Ambrosius Pendragon fell ill.

Shortly after returning to Britannia, Aurelius passed away, and Livia with him due to the bindings of blood and soul made by Merlin. Uther took the throne of Britannia, but Albion was too grief stricken to remain and flew westward; in all likelihood to the ever mysterious Avalon, homeland of the Dragons. Now without Albion, Uther was forced to stay at home and maintain order as High King. In the present day he remains on the throne, currently at war with the Gaelic-Cornwall alliance, who have a mutual hatred for the High King for the atrocities committed in his conquest and his attempted seduction of the Duke of Cornwall’s wife Igraine respectively.
