Descriptions & stakes in "Legacy"

I'm on my first reading of the Drizzt books (but a longtime FR fan and DnD player) and am finishing Legacy in the next day or two. I feel like there are two changes from the previous Drizzt books I've read: the stakes feel higher and the descriptions of injury seem more vivid and creative. Not that they weren't fantatsic in earlier books, but I'm wincing or gasping a lot more with Legacy.

I'm curious if Legacy *is* that different or if it's just me. I'm also curious if something happened during/before the writing of this one, that freed Salvatore to push the limits. I checked the archives of the sub and didn't see any info and I didn't go looking elsewhere, since I thought it would be a good topic to get opinions on here.

I tagged as "spoilers" so folks can talk freely. I have a chapter and the epilogue to go, and I know there will be at least one more big gasp moment before I'm done, but I couldn't wait to talk about it another day.
