Thinkpad x240 in 2026

My maxed-out ThinkPad X240 is honestly the definition of a “survivor machine” in my setup 😭

Specs (maxed + upgraded):

  • Intel i7 (low-power U-series upgrade)
  • 16GB RAM (maxed for this platform)
  • SSD upgrade
  • Intel integrated graphics
  • Fully refurbished + mid-life serviced unit

OS setup:

  • Windows 10 → main school OS
  • Linux Mint → lightweight coding + daily Linux use
  • Ubuntu → testing / learning server environments

Mid-life refresh work done:

  • SSD upgrade (huge speed boost)
  • RAM maxed to 16GB
  • CPU upgraded to i7 variant
  • full internal cleaning + repaste
  • battery replacement/maintenance cycle
  • keyboard + trackpad servicing
  • full motherboard diagnostics check

Main uses:

  • School work / assignments
  • Coding (Python, HTML, small projects)
  • Notes + documents
  • Research + browsing
  • SSH into my main systems (Mac Pro / servers)
  • Backup machine when other laptops are busy

What makes it still relevant:

  • extremely durable ThinkPad chassis
  • amazing keyboard for long typing sessions
  • low power = efficient and cool running
  • very stable for daily school use
  • fully repairable/modular design
  • light and easy to carry every day

It’s not a performance monster, but it doesn’t try to be. It’s the “always reliable, always ready” machine in my ecosystem.

While my Mac Pro handles heavy workstation + VM workloads, the X240 is just pure stability for school life — no overheating, no drama, just works 😭

Dell Inspiron 3537

My maxed-out Dell Inspiron 3537 somehow survived into 2026 and honestly became one of the weirdest but coolest machines in my setup 😭

Specs:

  • Intel i7
  • 16GB RAM
  • SSD upgraded
  • AMD Radeon dGPU model
  • Mid-life refreshed internally

OS setup:

  • Windows 10 → main editing/gaming OS
  • Windows 11 → newer apps/testing
  • Linux Mint → lightweight Linux setup
  • Ubuntu → experimenting/server stuff

But the craziest part is how much work went into bringing this thing back properly.

Mid-life refresh included:

  • new battery
  • replacement body parts/chassis pieces
  • upgraded display
  • speaker replacements
  • refreshed heatsink + fan
  • full motherboard diagnostics/testing
  • internal cleaning + servicing

This thing started as a normal consumer laptop but after all the upgrades/restoration it honestly feels way more capable than people expect.

Main uses:

  • Portable editing machine
  • Photoshop/light video editing
  • Coding/programming
  • Older/light gaming
  • Testing different OSes
  • Backup workstation

The dedicated AMD GPU honestly carries this machine harder than expected for an old Inspiron. Obviously it’s not modern gaming laptop level, but for:

  • esports titles
  • older AAA games
  • emulation
  • multimedia work it still holds up surprisingly okay.

What surprised me most is how usable it became after the refresh:

  • SSD made it massively faster
  • 16GB RAM helped multitasking a ton
  • upgraded cooling improved thermals
  • replacement parts made it feel “alive” again
  • still easy to repair and maintain

Honestly feels less like an old neglected laptop and more like a restored project machine that somehow still earns its place in my ecosystem 😭

Macbook Pro 2015 15-inch (The Goat)

My mid-life refreshed 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro is honestly one of the most balanced machines in my entire setup 😭

Specs:

  • Quad-core Intel i7
  • 16GB RAM
  • Upgraded SSD
  • Dual graphics model
  • Retina display

OS setup:

  • Mojave → older creative apps + stability
  • Monterey → main macOS for editing/productivity
  • Windows 10 → gaming + Windows-only apps
  • Linux Mint → lightweight Linux/testing

This machine basically became my portable workstation alongside my 2013 Mac Pro setup.

Main uses:

  • Final Cut Pro editing
  • Photoshop/light creative work
  • Coding/programming
  • Travel workstation
  • Backup editing machine
  • General productivity

Honestly the best part about this laptop is how COMPLETE it feels:

  • real ports
  • amazing keyboard
  • solid cooling
  • Retina display still looks good in 2026
  • upgradeable SSD
  • doesn’t feel fragile

Compared to newer laptops, this thing still feels like an actual “pro machine” instead of just a thin slab with dongles everywhere 😭

Gaming obviously isn’t modern RTX laptop territory, but Windows 10 Boot Camp still handles:

  • older AAA games
  • esports titles
  • emulation
  • lighter Steam games pretty decently.

It’s honestly one of Apple’s best aging Intel laptops because it still balances:

  • performance
  • thermals
  • portability
  • repairability
  • usability

without becoming annoying to use daily.

Meanwhile my Mac Pro handles the crazy VM/server/workstation stuff while this acts as my portable creative machine.

Mac Pro 2013

Finally finished building out my Late 2013 Mac Pro “trashcan” setup in 2026 and honestly this thing still goes hard 😭

Specs:

  • 12-Core Xeon E5
  • Dual AMD FirePro D700s
  • 128GB ECC RAM
  • 4TB Gen4 NVMe SSD
  • Dual Apple Cinema Displays

OS setup:

  • Mojave → legacy + 32-bit apps + older FCP
  • Monterey → heavier editing/encoding
  • Sequoia → personal daily macOS
  • Windows 10 → gaming
  • Windows 11 → newer Windows apps
  • Linux Mint → lightweight desktop
  • Windows 7 VM → legacy/retro workflows

This machine was originally bought refurbished and later refreshed again with newer CPU/RAM/SSD upgrades, so it’s aged way better than untouched units.

Honestly the funniest part is how WELL this thing still handles multitasking. 128GB RAM basically turns it into a mini server rack disguised as a desktop. I can run VMs, edit videos, keep multiple OS installs, and still have the system feel smooth.

Gaming obviously isn’t modern RTX-level or anything, but Windows 10 on the D700s still handles esports/older AAA titles surprisingly decently.

Also running:

  • 2011 Mac mini as my always-on server
  • 2012 Mac mini as a personal mini desktop
  • 2015 15” MBP + Dell 3537 as editing laptops
  • 2015 13” MBP as cafe/student machine
  • X240 for school
  • 2017 Air for travel

Basically built a weird hybrid Apple/Linux/Windows ecosystem around older refreshed hardware instead of buying one expensive modern machine lol.
