Mr. Robot’s hacking scenes still hold up 10 years later — and yes, I checked on the revival rumors

I rewatched Mr. Robot recently and I’m convinced it’s still the gold standard for how a show can portray hacking without insulting the audience’s intelligence. No “I’m in” after three keystrokes — real tools, real terminal syntax, actual social engineering tactics a security researcher would recognize. The Bluetooth car hack, the Raspberry Pi drop at Steel Mountain, the Rubber Ducky USB trick… whoever consulted on this show clearly cared about getting it right.
The performances hold up just as well. Rami Malek’s whole physicality as Elliot — the stillness, the dissociation he carries in his face — makes scenes work that would fall flat with a lesser actor. Christian Slater brings this magnetic, unsettling warmth to Mr. Robot that keeps you guessing the whole way through. Even the side characters (Darlene, Tyrell, Angela) feel lived-in rather than written.
And then there’s Sam Esmail’s direction — off-center framing, characters pushed into corners of the shot, long uncomfortable silences, whole episodes shot in single takes. It’s not just a style choice, it actively puts you inside Elliot’s headspace. Genuinely some of the best visual storytelling on TV in the last decade.
For anyone wondering about a comeback: there isn’t one coming. Esmail, Malek, and Christian Slater reunited on stage at New York Comic Con in October 2025 for the show’s 10th anniversary, which was a fun nostalgia trip — but a month later Malek flatly ruled out a Season 5, reboot, or spinoff when asked directly. He did mention that he and Esmail have talked about working together again down the line, just not on this. Esmail has said for years that Elliot’s story was always meant to end exactly where it did, so this isn’t a cancellation — it’s just done, on purpose.
Curious how everyone else feels about it staying closed for good — relieved it’s not getting watered down with a cash-grab revival, or still holding out hope for one?
