Midsommar priestess

Midsommar priestess

When my wife took me to see this painting, my first impression was this is Midsommar. The portrait of the Baltic Pagan Priestess dates back to 1872 by Wincenty Sleńdziński. In Lithuania we call it Joninės. These rituals are still alive and well but don't involve human sacrifices as far as I know. Anyway, couldn't resist watching Midsommar again on Midsummer night. The level of detail in the settings is incredible. Ari Aster really dug deep to make a truly haunting Midsummer Night's Tale.

Curious what your thoughts are?

The odds of two biologically white parents having a black baby are scientifically zero if both parents are of fully European descent. Because black skin tone requires multiple dominant genes, it cannot be a recessive trait inherited unexpectedly from two white parents. Yet we have Frank and Monica and baby Liam. Go figure?

I got a chance to see James "Blood" Ulmer a few years ago in Vilnius. Here's a clip. I didn't know much about him at the time, but learned he played with Ornette Coleman, Arthur Blythe and other greats. Sad to hear of his passing. I found a copy of Odyssey at discogs and look forward to its arrival.

The Lost Telegram

We are recording an LP together this weekend in NewYork. How about coming in to play bass stop call Alvan Douglas 212–5812212. Peace Jimi Hendrix Miles Davis Tony Williams.

Just curious if anyone put any thought into the alleged "Lost Telegram" that would have brought Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney. Here are my thoughts on it from last year when I saw that Howard Stern had asked McCartney about the telegram on Jimi's 80th anniversary. Paul had no knowledge of it and after doing some checking it was doubtful this telegram was ever sent.

Everyone knows Miles wanted to work with Jimi but for whatever reason it never came to be, which is odd as Jimi was still around while Miles was working on Live-Evil, an album allegedly inspired by what Miles heard of Jimi. John McLaughlin talked about how he took Miles to see the Monterey Pop movie with Jimi in it. No mention of Macca.

Out of Japan

When I saw that Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra had done a fresh take on Eric Dolphy's classic album, I couldn't resist making an album cover of my own, as we were recently in Japan, and had caught Shinjuku Station at rush hour a couple times to feel what it was like when thousands of people press against each other to get on the trains.

The music is great! The vinyl is pressed at 45 rpm, which is both a blessing and a curse. You get greater fidelity but the album is split over two vinyls. Hard to find the original CD at a reasonable price. I highly recommend it.
