Employees: do seasonal part-time contracts get extended?

on behalf of a friend.

my 3 month contract ends on June 1. the manager recently left a paper in the lunchroom asking employees to share their preferred vacation dates, pending approval.
I have two vacation days so far they say but my contract ends soon and I’m not sure if I should just ask for cash instead?

I tried to ask the very rude manager if my contract going to be extended and he said it’s upto corporate.

What motivates you? Are you hoping to get a job? Or are you unemployed by choice or visa restrictions?

I am 30 years old and married. I could not complete my education after getting a bachelors degree and being a straight A student throughout my life.
I got married at 24 out of choice. I got a good job during covid, contributed to our family expenses and travel expenses, and then in 2023 I moved to a different country where I’ve struggled to find a job in my field so far.
I don’t enjoy cooking and cleaning, I do it because there’s no other option.

We thought of having kids, but I am not sure yet and not having a stable job makes it worse. My confidence went down to zero, but then I realized I should not tie my worth to a job. I am still worthy of happiness and peace but it also makes me feel guilty sometimes.

I wonder if any woman my age out there is not working, and is in peace? What makes you excited to wake up in the morning?

I work at a dollar store, part time. The manager is rude and screams at me for tiny reasons. Lately he calls me even at 7 am on my day off to ask me to cover shifts. I say no or I don’t answer the call and the manager remarked on a call once “you never answer calls”

Maybe hinting that I’m not reliable?

My colleagues are not friendly, they don’t even say hi to me but every morning my phone rings asking to cover their shift. I have never asked anyone to cover my shift yet and I don’t think it’s my job to find someone to cover my shift IF I’ve given a notice in advance.

If i have a shift on the same day: I am glad to accommodate timings or stay an extra hour. I understand that we should help colleagues out but I don’t get treated well, I am not included in their “circle”.

I don’t hope to grow and continue in this toxic environment, I’ll leave the minute I get a better opportunity but until then: is it expected of me to be available on call? I am guilt-tripping myself because unemployment sucks
