Learning how to paint/manage brushes

Hey so I've never painted except with my fingers lol, but how do I keep my brush well maintained? My citadel starter brush is fraying and I've been really light on brushing/taking my time. Also how do I completely clear out my brush of red so that I can then use white? When do I change out my water and when cleaning my brush, can I use the water that I've been using to thin out my paint even though it's not clean or clear? Thank you for any tips and help.

2016 ford fusion titanium energi 2.0

I know that the transmission can be iffy if it hadn't ever been serviced and 2016 had a solid motor but is there anything I need to pay attention to? The Carfax has 1 owner no accidents in a nicer part of the state. It was an older gentleman and I only know because he left previous paperwork with leschwab lol. They also only drove it 10k miles a year while the avg is 15k according to carfax. I'm paying $9k and it has 108k miles and it seems like a very smooth driving car, but I just came from an 02 mustang gt that had all the marking of ford in a bad sense so I'm paranoid.
