Remember the 2020 Australia series when Rishabh Pant suffered a concussion, and KL Rahul had to take over the gloves mid-game?
Before that, KL was purely a specialist batsman. But keeping wickets allowed Virat Kohli to play an extra batsman/all-rounder, giving the team incredible balance. The management loved this blueprint so much that it essentially became permanent; KL was pushed into the primary keeper-batsman role at No. 5, which ultimately sidelined Pant in ODIs for a long stretch.
Fast forward to today, and this strategy is hitting a wall. As KL has aged, his wicketkeeping has become noticeably less reliable, and the team is once again forced to look for long-term options.
Given the current team dynamics, KL's No. 5 performances over the past year, Shreyas Iyer's role, and the wicketkeeper slot (where I personally prefer Pant over Ishan Kishan), we have a massive selection headache. Realistic squad balance dictates that only two out of these three (KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant) can fit into the playing XI.
Who do you think should get the spots?
My personal preference is Pant at No. 4 and KL Rahul at No. 5, leaving Shreyas Iyer on the bench.
What do you guys think? Is it time to finally move away from the KL Rahul keeper experiment, or does his batting at No. 5 still make him indispensable?
