May I have Loose Leash advice?

Hello all, I have some questions regarding loose leash walking.

Backstory: I have an 8 month male Golden. High energy. We did some training classes and in home trainer as well. Got one for walking but they liked “force” and corrections and started talking about how he’ll “need a prong collar” so I stopped that. The only force free trainer I can find in the area seems to be defunct.

The main problem: he starts to walk good by my side, I reward and he instantly leaves my side. Like getting the treat means it’s okay to leave. I will stop abrupt turn/stop to reset him but it kinda just repeats ad-nauseam.

Things I do:
- start the walk with some simple commands indoors to get him listening like: touch, heel (I use “by my side”), sit.
- have him sit and wait before going outdoors. I open the door and he can only start on my command. He has this down.
-I kinda mix up the methods when he’s pulling. Sometimes I abruptly turn around and wait for him to be by my side, or stand still until he comes back. Sometimes use a touch to get him back near me. Always rewarding for good behavior.
-I always reward by my side.
-once repositioned, give my heel command, make him do it as long as I can (usually a few steps to maybe 40 feet) and then reward before he can misbehave.

THEN, with that reward he’s like “fuck yes I’m going to do my own thing”.

I understand he’s an excited dog and walks are meant to be enjoyed but it seems he doesn’t make progress in three training walks.

These are in specific training walks, i also do sniff walks with a different leash, and I do other trainings/play/etc. I use good treats and a clicker or a marker word depending on mood. He knows both.

If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate any advice. I have a feeling it’s just going to be “it takes time” which might just be a reflections on me.

Prone Paddleboarding?

Hi all,
If anyone knows of where to acquire a prone paddleboard /boards for sale please let know! I’m new to the east coast and trying to get out on the water in a way I used to enjoy on the other coast.

Thanks!

A few moods of the Ocean

Pretty amateur photographer, but tried to capture a few shots last year before moving away from the ocean. The thing I miss most, besides good waves, is the different moods and little moments while surfing.

Pursuing further education

Hello guys and gals,

I’m looking for advice from my fellow firefighters.

I’m a former firefighter for a large state agency out west (you can probably guess) where I worked as an EMT/firefighter. Mainly wildland but also responded to the structural side (and good ol medical aids) as well.

My spouse got a job which took us to a different state (she’s with the navy) which means the chances of me locking down a stable firefighting gig are slim. I was debating using the time while she was in to go get a medic cert (obviously good for future fire career) but that got me thinking that maybe nursing would be better for moving around. That’s the biggest pro for nursing: job availability as well as there’s quite a high ceiling possible.

Medic interests me because firefighting is pretty rad and the best job I had.

If anyone transitioned to the nursing side of things (or vice versa) I would love to hear your experience and insight, whether that’s good or bad.

Cheers ya’ll.

Full Career Transition Advice?

Hello all,
I’m new to the sub, nice to find some people going through the same shit as me.

Has anyone fully pivoted careers? I’m a former firefighter that has been married for about 3 years and had to inevitably leave my job to join the wife after a major PCS. Firefighting is a hard job to maintain PCSing due to hiring timelines and availability. Wondering if anyone had a physical job and transitioned to remote work and what they found satisfying?

Thanks !
