Why does this song from the 1980s still feel so painfully relevant?

Why does this song from the 1980s still feel so painfully relevant?

Jigsaw - Fugazi- Marillion

The lyrics are all about dissociation, confusion, trying to piece yourself together all whilst searching for meaning in what feels like an increasingly chaotic world. Which raises the question… if a song written over 40 years ago still perfectly describes how many of us feel today .... what exactly does that say about society? Have we made no progress at all?

Are we just better dressed, more connected, yet somehow even more lost?
Did Fish accidentally predict modern life… or have humans always been this gloriously confused? Maybe that’s why it still hits so hard because underneath all the technology and noise, we’re still trying to fit the same pieces together.

What do the lyrics mean to you?

And yes i said 40 years! 1984....

Flair ideas and feedback from the community

We’re currently throwing around the idea of introducing post flairs for r/BandShirts and wanted to get the community’s thoughts before making any decisions.

The idea would be to help organise posts and make browsing easier whether that’s by music genre, shirt style/vibe or post type (for example: questions, collection posts, shirt IDs, new pickups, etc.).

At this stage, we’re just looking for your ideas and feedback:

  • What flairs would you like to see?
  • What would make browsing the sub easier for you?
  • Any categories you think would work well?

We’d just love to hear what the community thinks and try to build something that works for everyone.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

We want to address a recent change in moderation rules regarding Adult Content Creators (ACCs) posting in r/BandShirts.

Under the previous moderation team, ACCs may have been allowed to post here. However, after receiving explicit guidance from Reddit Admins, we have been informed that allowing Adult Content Creators to participate in a Safe For Work (SFW) subreddit such as ours risks Reddit reclassifying the subreddit as Not Safe For Work (NSFW) regardless of our intentions.

We want to be absolutely clear: we do not want this community to become NSFW.

r/BandShirts is and will remain a Safe For Work community.

That means it should be a space where users are not unexpectedly exposed to adult content or adult content promotion. It also means recognising that Reddit is accessible to users aged 13 and over who should be able to browse this subreddit safely without encountering links or profiles connected to adult content. Because of this, we have updated our rules and apps and will now strictly enforce our rule prohibiting Adult Content Creators from posting here.

This is not a personal judgement against anyone, nor is it targeted at any individual. It is simply the action required to protect the status and future of this community in accordance with Reddit Admin guidance.

There are many communities on Reddit that welcome Adult Content Creators, and we encourage those users to participate in spaces designed for that purpose.

Thank you to everyone who helps keep r/BandShirts focused on what it was created for: sharing and enjoying band shirts in a safe, welcoming environment for all.

Respect & Compliments

We want this community to stay respectful and welcoming while still allowing positive interaction.

What is okay

General, non-sexual compliments are absolutely fine, such as:

  • “You look great!”
  • “That’s a really cool band shirt.”
  • “Nice outfit, love your style.”
  • “This is a great photo.”
  • “You’ve got awesome taste in music.”

These kinds of comments are welcome because they are respectful and not focused on someone’s body in a sexual way.

What is not okay

  • We do not allow comments that sexualise or objectify members, including:
  • Sexual comments (“hot,” “sexy,” etc.)
  • Comments focused on someone’s body rather than the shirt or music
  • Remarks about how clothing “shows off” someone’s body
  • Any unsolicited or suggestive language

If your compliment is something you could comfortably say to a stranger in a public setting without it feeling inappropriate, it’s probably fine.
If it shifts attention to someone’s body, sexual attractiveness, or reduces them to individual body parts rather than acknowledging them as a whole person, it is considered objectification.

We encourage positivity and friendliness. Please keep interactions respectful and focused on the community’s purpose: band shirts and music appreciation. We welcome people making others feel good and supporting each other through positive reinforcement.

Our aim is to build people up, not knock them down.

Why does this version feel so personal?

Im a creep, Im a weirdo

There’s something about this rendition that feels more human, more vulnerable. It doesn’t just sound like a song it feels like an internal monologue. Listening to it, I kept thinking about how much of life is shaped by the conversations we have with ourselves you know the ones nobody else hears.

The quiet insecurities.
The overthinking.
The constant questioning of whether we’re enough.

Sometimes our own minds can be our harshest critics, replaying old wounds and imagined failures louder than reality ever does. But this version also reminds me of something else too, that vulnerability is not weakness. There’s strength in sitting with those uncomfortable thoughts instead of running from them. In acknowledging the parts of ourselves we usually hide.

Maybe life is less about silencing our insecurities and more about learning to live alongside them, without letting them define us. yes they shape us but they are not our whole story...

This song feels like that struggle
the tension between self doubt and self acceptance,
between the voice that tears us down and the quieter one trying to build us back up.

And maybe that’s what being human is......
learning which inner voice deserves to be believed.

Welcome to our Subreddit

We would like to thank the community for your patience while we have been making adjustments and updates in the background.

The subreddit rules have now been updated; however, these are subject to change when needed to ensure the community remains safe, consistent, and properly moderated. If you see any posts that do not comply or have slipped through moderation, please continue to use the report function. This directly supports the moderation team in reviewing and removing content efficiently.

We will not be engaging in or addressing any external discussion or drama regarding recent changes. Our priority is maintaining a consistent and well-moderated community.

r/bandshirts is and will remain a strictly SFW subreddit. In line with Reddit’s platform-wide expectations for general-access communities (including users aged 13+), we do not permit adult content creators or content/accounts that directly or indirectly promote adult platforms. This policy is applied solely to preserve the SFW nature of the community and is not based on individual users.

Our aim is to ensure the subreddit remains appropriate, accessible, and safe for all users who choose to participate in SFW communities.

If you have constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement, please continue to share them via modmail.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

BandShirts under new moderation.

r/BandShirts is now under a new moderation team. Over the next few days, we’ll be making some changes and removing content that isn’t a good fit for a SFW community.

We understand there may be some frustration around these changes, but we’re working as quickly as we can to put clear rules and guidelines in place that will help make this a stable and welcoming community again.
We appreciate your patience and support while we get everything set up.

This has always been our goal; however, during the NSFW status period, we were not able to enforce it consistently.

Moving forward, we will not be allowing users who actively post in NSFW subreddits to post in r/StyleIT. This is to further protect our community and ensure the focus remains aligned with what StyleIT stands for.

To be clear: if you are actively posting in NSFW subreddits, you will not be able to post here.

r/StyleIT is a Safe For Work subreddit. We do not have account age or karma requirements for posting. However, activity in NSFW subreddits will result in posts being removed automatically. This also applies to any previously approved posts.

We do allow certain exemptions. If there is a subreddit you believe should be considered for exemption (provided it does not contain nudity or explicit NSFW content), please send us a modmail for review.

If you would like to return to posting here, you will need to remove NSFW content from your account and ensure your NSFW flag is cleared.

Please note: this is not a ban on accounts that are simply marked NSFW, but rather those actively participating in NSFW communities. We understand that accounts can be incorrectly flagged or accidentally marked, and we do not intend to penalise that.

Thanks for helping us keep r/styleIT focused and SFW.

How to clear your NSFW flag officially:

Alternatively, you can post in r/Help, where Reddit admins sometimes assist directly.
